Rubbish interface, characters not credible

This game is unfinished and rubbish. I have been an RPG fan for years, and thoroughly enjoyed Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, and to a lesser extent NWN1. Also Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 were excellent, so as this was from some of the same makers, I was looking forward to a good game.
Unfortunately the user interface is awful and will give you a headache. In my opinion, it is simply unusable. The inventory for example is not full screen, and will leave you squinting to see it. Also, as you can't see the full picture of any item in your inventory, it takes ages to find anything. As inventoy management is such a big part of the game, these are major complaints in my opinion. Also, the game is much more reliant on keyboard use than in previous games. Perhaps I'm getting lazy, but I don't want to click more than once to get into the inventory or character screens, I'd much rather righ-click on the character's face. It seems like all the useful on-screen shortcuts have disappeared with no way to customise them! To make matters worse, the grammar is a bit dodgy and the game options seem very linear. All the magic has gone..or perhaps I've just grown up? Sigh...
If you're thinking you enjoyed the games I mentioned above, and will therefore like this, forget it. You probably won't. This game is a real disappointment for me anyway. I won't be wasting any more time on it.
eh...not so much

So although certain aspects of the original game have been improved, particularly character AI and your control of members of your party, many other gameplay features have been damaged or totally removed. Weight now becomes a serious issue in inventory management, as does the small and indistinguishable icons representing items. Meanwhile the innovative radial menu from NWN has been replaced by a pixelated dropdown with confusing options, making controlling your party and interacting with objects a chore.
It also feels as though there simply isn't enough going on in the game. Your party seldom fights groups significantly bigger than it (unlike the 10 on one fights from NWN) and seems to get killed much more often than it should. Characters stop following orders the instant you look away, just like in the original, and spellcasters in particular are extremely wasteful of their abilities. Offsetting all this is a decently engaging storyline and all the hack-and-slash you can shake a mouse at, with characters who manage to display personality at a roughly B-movie level (quite a lot better than most video games!)
In the meantime, the game looks, if anything, slightly worse than the original. Sure there are more prims onscreen, but framerate is choppy and character animations make everyone look like a marionette. The game is also depressingly prone to texturing errors and flat-out crashes, especially during the excessively long load times. The requirements for even minimum-graphics settings are utterly absurd. While you wait for the textures and mysteriously vanishing NPCs to sort themselves out, you can have fun trying desperately to get the camera to include your character and the ten feet directly in front of him/her. Honestly, the camera behaves as though it is playing a totally different game, possibly Mario Kart.
In conclusion, this game has a fine storyline and interesting characters, who unfortunately are trapped in the bodies of a bunch of manakins being dragged around by strings. The AI is prone to insubordination and the graphics turn an Alienware into an Apple Classic. Don't bother with this game if you frustrate easily.
Bypass this, play NWN1 Diamond Edition

As a devoted player of Neverwinter Nights 1 and the expansions, mods, etc, I was very excited to play the new game, Neverwinter Nights 2.
What a disappointment! The graphics are poor, there are many fewer character customization options, the performance of the game is hideous, and the companion AI is [...].
The storyline is pretty good although sometimes it's not clear what is really happening and some quests/moments aren't woven into any part of the story at all.
The story is linear, as was NWN1, but there seems to be much more railroading of the PC than in the first game.
Overall I wouldn't recommend this game. Instead I recommend the Diamond Edition of NWN1, other downloads from Bioware and a browse through community made modules.
Similiar and Worth It

I didn't get into the original Neverwinter Nights until quite a while after it came out, but once I tried it, I loved it. My father (whom I bought it for), still hasn't stopped playing the original (and then of course, I get him this one for Christmas to my mother's changrin).
Anyway...don't expect any leaps and bounds. In some ways the game is more difficult than it used to be. The interface is completely 100% re-designed. Although it's more adapable to different size resolutions, many icons are not as..clear as they used to be. It's more difficult for me to tell at a glance what is affecting my character. At the same time, many of the sounds are recycled from the previous game. Go figure. Still, I do enjoy it. I don't like how the minimap, however, doesn't show doors. This makes it VERY hard to navigate using it, since you have to keep watching out for doors and paths the map isn't showing. The previous game used a nifty little box for each door that made it obvious where to continue to.
The story is excellent, on par with the original, though a few areas tend to drag things out just a touch and the lack of epic levels will make some players want to skip through the side quests. You can collect quite a following of people a la SWKOTOR (not surprising, as the same developer made both).
Graphically it's no different - true, the graphics are improved, but overall I've seen far more realistic settings, such as in Oblivion (which ranks as my all time favorite RPG), and it's more of a drain. I can flip on Oblivion to it's max settings at 1280 x 1024 and get a better framerate than NWN2.
If you liked NWN, get it. It'll provide you tons of new AD&D 3.5 excitement. If you're a fan of the old gold-box games (like me!), all the more reason to play.
Great game, ignore early reviews

This game utilizes the same or similiar engine as neverwinter nights, so it feels somewhat similar. However, don't be confused with the two. NWN2 has more henchmen, your party of up to 5 is fully controllable, the story is way way better than NWN 1. Further, the allowance of craftable items really opens up the game to much more interesting content than other games. You want a flaming, cold, holy greatsword? No problem. Although you can only have 3 enchantments per item, it's relatively easy to get very nice goods around mid-game using the enchantment ability. How easy is the game? I never had a problem with combats, often I would walk away and come back and the enemies would be dead (a testament to the AI abilities in this game). My wife on the other hand (not a D&D expert) has significantly more challenge. If you want to have the challenge of very tough combat, there is an option to make enemies twice as hard, I think that's the amount of HP but I'm not sure.
All told, it took me about 100 hours to finish the game, and there is significant replay value since you can pick different paths. Yes, its somewhat linear unlike Balders Gate and Elder Scrolls. However, the main storyline is very gripping and engaging. This game is almost as good as Balder's Gate 2, the best RPG ever created, IMO. Yes, it's that good. Don't be dissuaded from 'sub-par graphics', they are really quite acceptable, no worse than ES: Oblivion. It runs fine on my rig (3 GHz Athlon64, Nvidia 6800GT, 1.5G ram). You may want to get more RAM for this game, but if you have a decent rig (this rig will run me probably $500 nowadays), it will run fine.
Somewhat disappointing

I really loved NWN1 and I expected a lot out of this game. It's disappointing that the game is so buggy. Here are some of the issues I've run across:
Occasional graphics card crashes (running on GeForce 6800 Ultra) and slow-downs.
Hotbar items mysteriously being swapped out or lost.
Keyboard input stops working or the camera starts spinning out of control.
Also, the game does not enjoy the same community atmosphere that the original did (and still does). The default campaign is extremely linear and boring and just seems uninspired.
I really wanted to like this game but I just find myself playing it so little, so soon after purchasing it. I did recently purchase Oblivion (after NWN2) and I see why the comparisons are made. Oblivion has superior graphics yet runs without a hitch on my machine. I'll keep the game on my machine for a while in hopes that more patches and community content will eventually salvage it.
Very buggy, poorly designed game

I have played the orginal Neverwinter Nights for years and enjoyed it very much......NW2 has many problems running on high end and medium speed computers....The graphics are poor at today standards and when you try to improve the graphic the frame rate on this game makes it unplayable at about 10 FPS which is totaly unacceptable and I am running 2 geforce 7800gt video cards in SLI mode with 3.4 ghz......Everyone should stay clear of this game until they can fix the serious flaws this game has.
Stay Away, SLOW!

I bough this game with high expectations. I really like part one. Part two will not disappoint as the story go's, graphics and voice acting. It's very good. Why am I giving this only 1 start if it's good? The game is so slow that maybe in 3 years when I buy a new top end PC I'll be able to play it on Medium. I found the game unplayable on High. Medium is a flip book or power point presentation. I had to set everything in the game to the lowest settings in order to get somewhat good frame rate. I say somewhat because it still lags when monster swarm.
Because of this game, I reinstalled my OS, Windows XP Pro. I got all the latest drivers and updates; After installing the game I patched it and defragmented my HD. It did help a little. My system is AMD 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+; 7200rpm Wester Digital HD, GeForce 7800 GTX 256MB; 3GB Ram. I play all sorts of latest games oh Highest settings and I have no problems with them. FEAR, PRAY, BF 2142, WOW

Just a quick point:
The problems (with graphics, etc.) expressed below are experienced by a minority of people who have systems that meet the requirements but unfortunately (due to some sort of oversight of the developer's part) have issues running the game.
In case you're holding off on buying this game, my advice is don't, especially if you're a D&D fan or liked the original Neverwinter Nights. The largely negative reviews here on Amazon make perfect sense...
Because the rest of us are still playing the game!
It's fun, but buggy.

I love this game. The characters and gameplay are great. However, bugs are a problem. Most, if you've kept a couple saves, can be backed up to avoid, but I think I'm in a place now where I may not be able to finish the game because it crashes every time I try to go back to the courtyard of my castle. Big problem.
