Download the latest patch...then this game is a blast.

I see that most people who gave this game a bad score are whinning about the poor performace. I have a 8800GTX, so the game runs beautifully for me at 1680x1050...i imagine that not everyone has a high-end graphic card though, so i'll just give you an advice: Download the latest 1.03 patch. It fixes many bugs, adds new features, and most important of all, it improves performace greatly.

As for those whinning that there's no Linux and Mac support, you should know that MOST games don't support those OS's. So, it's pretty unfair to give the game a bad score just because it doesn't run on an OS that hardly any game supports. If you want to game, don't buy MAC system... it's as simple as that.

DONT pay attention to the poor review below..

I have no idea what this other guy is talking about; NWN 2 is amazing. It offers about 50 hours of gameplay (10x better than 1st NWN). The graphics aren't great, but they scenery/sound is absolutely amazing because unlike the 1st NWN which used tilesets, NWN 2 actually uses heightened textures. The story mode is amazing as well, with great sounding dialogue throughout. There were some bugs, but the patch fixes many of them. Also, it's great how you can obtain strongholds, train your army, and manage a small economy.

Best games ever, but

Dungeons & Dragons role playing computer games are the greatest ever. But unfortunately I found out my video card would not work with the game after I bought it and failed to run it. To bad I will miss out on NWN2.

Some Reviews Are Misleading, This Game Rocks!

THIS IS AN AWESOME GAME. EVERYONE IS ENTITILED TO HIS/HER OPINION, BUT SOME REVIEWS ARE MISLEADING. I'VE RESPONDED TO ONE SUCH REVIEW BELOW.

MY RESPONSES/COMMENTS ARE IN ALL-CAPS.

Bad:
Radial menus are gone.

THIS IS GOOD IMO!

Campaign is linear.

WRONG! IT IS LINEAR IN THE BEGINNING.

No exploration as there are no longer any area transitions. Go to world map, click area, fight in small area, go to world map, continue over and over.

THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE TO WALK FOREVER TO RETURN FROM A DUNGEON TO TOWN TO BUY/SELL GEAR.

Toolset is not intuitive and frustrating to use. If you think NWN's was difficult this one is much worse. NWN's is far superior in ease of use.

A CALCULATOR IS EASIER TO USE THAN A SPREADSHEET TOO.

There are very few tilesets and they lack what NWN's have.

TILESETS ARE OLD SCHOOL. EXTERIORS ARE NOW WALKMESHES WITH NO LIMITATION ON PLACEABLES.

There are no longer any Item, Monster, Clothing, wizards in the toolset.

THE WIZARDS IN NWN1 WERE UNNECESSARY. JUST COPY AND EXISTING ITEM AND MODIFY IT.

They used the same character soundsets as NWN but they're worse. WRONG.

MOST SOUNDSETS WERE UPDATED AND THE SOUNDTRACK IS GREAT!

Camera edge scrolling is too slow to use effectively. There is no way to adjust edge scrolling.

NEVER USE EDGE SCROLLING.

Chase camera is useless underground because walls obstruct view.

THERE ARE PLENTLY OF CAMERA OPTIONS; SOME MORE USEFUL IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS THAN OTHERS.

Cannot put 2 weapons or shield and weapon on quick slot - Dual Wield

ALREADY ANNOUNCED TO BE ADDED IN PATCH

Cannot unequip a weapon using quick slot. It must be done manually from the inventory screen.

YOU CAN JUST EQUIP ANOTHER WEAPON AS EASILY W/O UNEQUIPING THE EXISTING ONE

Cannot put skills/feats on quick slots. WRONG.

DRAG THEM FROM THE CHARACTER SHEET TO THE QUICK SLOT.

AI party characters get stuck and cannot move.

THAT HAPPENED IN NWN1 OCCASIONALLY TOO. THE GREAT THING ABOUT NWN2 IS THAT YOU CAN TAKE CONTROL OF THEM JUST BY CLICKING ON THEM TO RESOLVE AI ISSUES.

AI party characters must be micro managed as the AI is horrible. You have to keep pausing the game to get everyone working together, unpause for a few seconds, pause and rearrange them, and so on, and so on.

YOU PROBABLY WILL DO BETTER IF YOU MICROMANAGE, BUT THE AI IS DESCENT.

AI sometimes will not do what you order them to.

HAVEN'T NOTICED THIS.

Direction keys WASD over control movement making it very difficult.

YOU CAN REMAP ANY KEYS BEFORE YOU START THE GAME. YOU CAN'T REMAP DURING THE GAME SO PEOPLE OCCASIONALLY MISS THIS.

New targeting system is difficult and you end up casting spells on the wrong target constantly.

YOU CAN TURN OFF THE AUTO RUN ACTION ON SELECTED TARGET. THERE ARE TONS OF GREAT OPTIONS TO CHANGE THE UI AND BEHAVIOR IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE DEFAULTS.

No Linux support.

WHATEVER

No Great Cleave of Coup-de-Grace animations. the monsters around you just drop dead without anyone touching them.

HAVEN'T NOTICED

Cannot drag a box or ctrl click all of your party members to select them all; Like older titles from Obsidian??

OK

Character heads pretty much all look them same. You can give them different hair styles though.

I THINK THE OPTIONS ARE GOOD.

Hardly any monsters. They used different colors or just renamed some monsters with the same model. The first part of the campaign is just fighting dwarfs. No Minotaurs, Hobgoblins, only 2 dragons. THERE ARE PLENTLY OF MONSTERS.

THE MODELS ARE SPECTACULAR. I'D LOOK FOR OTHER DRAGONS, ETC. IN AN EXPANSION.

no rideable horses which NWN has

PLEASE!!!!!!!!

DM client is beta as they planned not to add one even though the 1st has it

THE CLIENT WILL BE DELIVERED. BE PATIENT.

Large persitant worlds are gone because of huge memory requirements (Developer's own words) This is probably why it shipped with D&D online a pay per month subscription

OTHER PW BUILDERS ARE MOVING FORWARD SO TIME WILL TELL

Non-stop cutscenes

AWESOME CUTSCENES AT THAT! HELLO! THIS IS A ROLE PLAYING GAME.

Poor animations

WRONG! COMPARE THE DRAGON MOVEMENT IN NWN1 AND NWN2. HA!

No more character portaits

GET OVER IT.

Hardly any variation in armor, weapons, clothing, items, etc - Falls way short of NWN

WE MUST BE PLAYING DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF NWN2. THE VARIETIES ARE PRACTICALLY INFINITE.

Graphics are better than NWN but mediocre when compared to other current titles. Frame rates are worse than titles with better graphics!

GRAPHICS ARE INCREDIBLE. GO TO THE NWN2 WEB SITE AND DECIDE FOR YOURSELF.

Obsidian dropped the ball on this one. They have not listened to the large NWN following and have implemented what they want, not the customer.
APPARENTLY THEY DIDN'T LISTED TO SOMEONE, BUT THE IMPROVEMENTS ARE RIGHT ON TARGET IMO.

If you're thinking about buying, it is more like Baldurs Gate than NWN. Even the "You have been waylaid by enemies," on the world map is back. If you like Icewind Dale or Baldurs Gate you'll probably like this.

OKAY

If you own NWN stick with it, if you like the sound of this type game buy NWN Diamond edition. It is far superior to NWN2.

IF YOU DON'T BUY NWN2 YOU ARE MISSING OUT ON A LOT OF FUN!!!!

Great for DND and solo gamer fans!

I love this game because it is just like DND and is playable by just me. I am not an online gamer. I like that it gives you 'real' companions and has a decent storyline / theme. As the main character, I feel like I am in an interactive story where I can control my fate to some degree and I don't really know what to expect from the others I meet. I like the way I don't have to sweat the details, or I can sweat them as much as I prefer. It has a good variety that way. I also like when you combat, you don't have to be too involved (don't need a lot of hand/eye coordination), just click on the next enemy and let your character roll. The NPC's have interesting personalities and backgrounds, so the world is not too flat. I don't mind the 'extras' just wandering around in the screens... they don't bother me either way and are not pertinent to the action.

It took me a while to learn how to control the camera views (as others have complained about) but once you get the hang of it, it actually works pretty well. I have tried other games that actually make me nauseous but this one didn't. I use the mouse and the keyboard to control it. It also took me a few tries to learn how to use the items you get like potions that are used on yourself or a companion. Just save your game often and reload if something doesn't work, so you can try it again until you understand exactly what to do. The other issue with this game is it does need lots of video memory to work well. I first tried to load it on my old gaming laptop and it waited until I got it loaded and tried to run it to tell me that I didn't have enough video memory. Look at the specs before you buy it and make sure you have enough.

Overall, I give this game four stars because it is interesting, fun, dynamic, pretty close to DND in rules and theme, and for single gamers. I didn't give it the full five stars because of the camera control learning curve... it took me a while to get used to it, as well as learn how to use some of the items. Maybe the manual could have spelled it out better? I would buy all games like this one just because this style of game is one of two I prefer (being an old DND player from years ago.) So, if you just want a good DND game that offers a variety of choice and respectable depth, this one is excellent and higly recommended. I hope they put out some more like this soon.

An unfairly criticized game

I've been playing this game for a few days now and I must say that I'm really enjoying it, i'd give it a 9/10 overall. After reading page after page of nay sayer's reviews and fearing that it wasn't going to be that great, I am pleasantly surprised. It seems that most complaints you hear are about the system requirements. Let me put this into perspective - I have been recently playing the original NWN on my system with alot of the tweaks turned on (anti-aliasing, etc) and the framerate drops dramatically during big combat scenes (BTW, my specs: AMD Athlon 64 4000+, 256 MB Raedon x850 graphics card, 2 gigs ram). On NWN2 I have LESS lag than on the original with the tweaks turned on. I think most complaints are because people's systems aren't powerful enough to run the game properly but, as anyone who follows game design knows, these days, software is ahead of hardware. Remember when Oblivion came out and people were talking about horrible framerates and rendering issues? This is no fault of the game.

The character models are detailed and really nicely designed. Some have said that there aren't many options as far as modifying your appearance but, if you factor in skin tones, hair styles, armor and weapons, etc there are LOTS of variations (NO, it's not as varied as Oblivion, but what other game is? Plus, most of the time there is going to be a helmet on your head, do we really need to see how pretty and full your character's lips are or how arched your eyebrows are?). There are ALOT more sub-races to choose from in this game. Some of the more powerful ones carry a leveling penalty, ie - 1,2 or 3 levels behind standard characters. The monsters designs are fantastic. Really I'm quite impressed by how great they look. Enviroment designs aren't as detailed but still good (remember the blockiness of NWN's backgrounds?) plus you can see the sky which has nice details like twinkling stars at night. As has been said before, the magic effects are terrific and offer so much more eye-candy than NWN or perhaps any other game I know of.

Lots of people have complained about how difficult the camera is. This is simply untrue - you have basically the same options as in NWN and one more "free mode" which, to me, is useless. It does seem that the camera freaks out sometimes either by unwanted zooming or rotating but that may be because of my controller and isn't necessarily a game design flaw.

The new drop down menus all seem user friendly to me (they quit using the radial menu from NWN). You have a FULL 10 LEVELS of quick menu at the bottom of the screen to use. My biggest pet peeve so far (and it's a small one!) is that when you overwrite a game, you have to type a name for it and can't automatically use the old one.

I am really looking forward to developing my character (Tiefling bard/future red-dragon disciple), exploring the game further and seeing what user content (modules, hacks, etc) comes out for it. Although there are some minor technical issues, this game stands as a major achievement and upcoming patches (the first of which is already out) will only improve it's stability and gameplay. If you're into computer RPGs, this, like NWN before it, is an incredible value. Don't believe the hype - this is a great game.

Solid game

First off it says my location as Afghanistan because I am deployed right now. I am all American . Now thats out of the way on to my review :)

I purchased this game based upon my experiances with NWN1. Granted I have only had the game for less than 2 weeks I have enjoyed it very much. My review is based on my opinion and experiance with past games.

The good:
1.Solid Character development
2.D&D v 3.5 rules
3.Great looking textures
4. Overall gameplay is great
5. Has a module editor

The not so good:
1. The Camera <-- I know this one has been mentioned a few times
2. Dungeons and Buildings can get laggy on older systems at times
3.I wish I didnt have a party at times

Overall :

I believe this game will become another loved classic by those who truly like to roleplay and love this genre of games. I for one rated it 5 stars because its a great game and well worth my money. The replay value is endless due to so many combinations of characters and moddability. I hope they have expansions in the works . In my eyes if the game play is awesome then game is great the graphics is just the icing on the cake.

Enjoyable game

Having played Neverwinter Nights, I have been impatiently waiting for this sequel. The game is quite enjoyable and immersive. This is no fast-paced superficial hack and slash but a deeper role-playing experience. The editor will make the replay value of this game phenomenal.

Works suprisingly well for me

I must say that after reading some reviews on how the game ran rather poorly on relatively high-end hardware, I was a bit apprehensive about the performance on my machine. Specifically, whether my fairly old video card would break a hip:
Athlon 64 3500
Nvidia 6600GT
1GB RAM

Unnecessary worrying in my case. After I downloaded the patch, the game runs quite smoothly on medium-high settings. Still looks beautiful, no major bugs so far, and fun story. I have found it to be more immersive than the first game, mostly due to how the companions, camera and dialogue are set up, and there seems to be a bit more choices, which is fun. I like how the party members are more than simply, "K, boss, working for you now" mercenaries. Speaking of which, character death is implemented in a much less irritating fashion than in the first game. Instead of being magically transported to a temple at which you have to pay to get back, you are simply knocked out until either your party all dies (reload time), someone resurrects you, or the combat is over and you recover slightly. Sort of like Knights of the Old Republic.

Anyway, the character creation is greatly improved upon. It is no City of Heroes, but at least you have the option to pick one of 16 races and customize the face, eyes, hair, and skin to a fairly diverse degree; which is great for those who like to spend a ridiculous amount of time with (ultimately non-essential) character vanity (yeah, I am guilty of this). There are also 12 base classes and 16 prestige classes to play around with.

Also the GUI is laid out nicely (very similar to NWN1), but has some extra zazz thrown in. Feat, item, skill, and spell icons now have shiny new paintjobs, and inter-party swapping has a nice drag-and-drop feature, to name a couple. My only complaint is that I wish some of the menus were scalable (then again, maybe they are and I haven't been paying attention).

A hint for those annoyed with the camera settings: if you like the "driving mode" camera, but hate that it doesn't completely stay behind the character (ie. turning!), go to the nwnplayer.ini and change CameraFollowAlways to 1. That should make it behave a bit more like the camera in KOTOR, for instance.

By the way, get the DVD-ROM version; unless you do not mind messing with 7 CDs (if I remember right) for installation.

Update: Fine, you want cons, I shall give you cons:
- The loading times are quite long.
- The manual needs to have pictures.
- There should be more recorded voices for NPCs, more "cutscene" type dialogue.
- I miss radial menus.
- The A and D keys are oversensitive.
- I want a hellhound again.

Another great game

Neverwinter Nights 2 takes all the great aspects of the first game and expands on them. New spells and abilities (along with the new Warlock class) give you plenty of fresh character choices. Further, your character will look much more pretty as NWN2's graphics are jaw-dropping. You don't need the best system in the world to run it, but you may have to disable a few features to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
The single player campaign is interesting and addicting. There is more emphasis on companions, and they can now be directly controlled, like in Baulder's Gate. You can build your own keep, choosing how to arm your troops and either encouraging corruption to make a buck, or keeping strict standards to serve the King. The story is good, and cutscenes are generally well done.
However, the basic gameplay is pretty much the same. This isn't a bad thing, especially if you liked the first one. The interface is straightforward once you play a little, and is much more like a MMORPG like warcraft. Choosing spells is a breeze, which was not very easy in NWN1.

The toolset is back, of course. There are a whole host of new options that make NWN2 a far more customizable game than NWN1. You can change the color of buildings, choose the tint of a golem's skin, and make a rat the size of a human with scaling. The UI is more Visual Studio style, allowing you to edit multiple areas, scripts, and creatures easier. However, while many aspects of the toolset are easier to use, some are far less straightforward. This is a problem, especially for players who already struggle with the learning curve of module making.

There are bugs with Neverwinter Nights 2, as of release, that much is sure. I found that my game crashed more than once. This is, naturally, very fustrating. All the game's lights are dynamic, which means more power for the toolset and a more pretty game environment, but does mean that things can slow down. Is the game optimized perfectly? No. Will these bugs be adressed? Yes. And the bugs experienced are not enough to ruin the game, even if you are just buying it for the single player experience. But NWN2 is far more than the single player game, it is the ability to create your own world and share it online. Yes, there are problems with this game that were not present with the first game, but it is still an amazing game that delivers something that no other game in the market can: The ability to create your own world, with your rules. And again, the single player is good enough...good enough to keep me playing despite an occasional crash. If you liked the first game, you'll like Neverwinter Nights 2...but waiting a few weeks for future updates to come out might not be a bad idea if you are on the fence.
