Read the Gamespot.com review

I am a big RPG fan. I really enjoy the dungeons and dragons games in particular and I have been playing since the time of pencil and paper AD&D. Neverwinter Nights has become one of my favorite games and I was greatly looking forward to the sequel. However, I nearly did not buy the game because of the bad reviews that I read on amazon.com. Because of this fact I would like to draw potential buyers' attention to the review done on gamespot.com so that they can make a fully informed decision.

Gamespot.com is a wonderful resource for the gamer community and they have done many informative and professional reviews of games. I rely on their input regularly when I am looking for new games to play. They gave Neverwinter Nights 2 a rating of 8.6 out of 10. Over 4,000 other gamers gave their personal opinion of the game and gave it a rating of 8.5 out of 10. The rating system takes into account many factors including: gameplay, graphics, sound, value, and tilt. The reviewer made this statement at the beginning of the review "Neverwinter Nights 2 isn't without some technical issues, but the engaging, dynamic story and proven Dungeons and Dragons framework make it a roleplaying game the shouldn't be missed". I value the opinions of my fellow amazon.com reviewers but I simply wanted to let people know about the review on gamespot.com because I do not want anyone to miss the opportunity to play a great game. I hope this information was helpful.

OK, but just OK

My two biggest complaints are system requirements and interface, and believe me those are pretty big areas to have complaints in.

System requirements...I really don't see what the extra graphics horsepower bought us. OK the eye candy is a bit "tastier" but did it enhance gameplay. I would say no. It seems that you paid for hardware upgrades to basically bring your system up to "state-of-the-art" and the graphics in the game aren't "breakthrough" enough, but it just might be that I over-expected.

Now the game mechanics or interface, that's a whole other story. Horrid simply horrid. While the radial interface of the original game was a little cumbersome, there was at least some intuitive-ness to it. From the click on the map to go there traveling, to hard to get rid of quests, this new game is just wrong. As you progress in gameplay, the interface gets easier, but it's never a smooth organic feel.

Is the sequel as good as the original?

The simple answer: No, it is not. Not even close.

The good: The game starts off with a character creation mode that enables you to choose between a wide array of personalized traits for your new adventurer that actually have meaning. The sound quality is wonderful, mixing mood-enhancing music with light ambience sounds. Some graphical touches, including lighting really set up scenes well.

The bad: Poor camera control in any sense of the word, inability to really manage your inventory and quests quickly and effectively. Lack of early-going action.

The ugly: Some of the character models look years behind, even with the highest-supportable in-game resolution and almost all settings maxed. Too much backstory and too little action early on. Minor glitches even after patching that become nuisance at early stages.

After playing the game for two hours I have to say this is one of the most mediocre titles I've played in years. I am known for looking for those games that really define, that set the bar, and that are easy to get into. I enjoy a small learning curve and an interface that is complex yet accessible.

After the first hour I was dreading moving around the world, bored with the early-going quests and disappointed with everything BUT the presentation. The presentation is the only redeeming factor in this title. Despite the fact that this sequel provides more voice-over than the original (thank goodness) and a tweaked interface, I quickly realized it pales in comparison. The original game didn't drown you in detail and quickly drew you into the game. Sadly, this game does not.

The final word: I'm glad I bought this for half of retail during a holiday sale. I'm also glad I can put it behind me with other exceptional titles out this holiday season. I recommend trying out Guild Wars or Oblivion if you absolutely must have an RPG fix over the next few months. I also hear DDO is quite good. This is no Morrowind or NWN 1. Save your time and cash, look elsewhere.

Can't even play this game

Well it was what my girlfriend wanted for christmas. After installing and updating the game for a couple of hours my gf was going to play this game and it opened with an error message about no direct3D device available.
After a little frustration we searched the atari website for why this could be and found it under the FAQ:
"Does NWN2 support any video card?"
Basically you need a graphics card that is pretty new or it won't work at all. There are a bunch of cards that explicitly don't work. Between the two of us, we have 4 computers, 3 of them were on the explicitly don't work list. One was not, but won't work. The newest computer we have is about a year old and all of the computers were top of the line when we got them. 3 of the computers are less than 2 years old.

Don't get this computer game unless you confirm that the graphics card will work. I got it assuming that "recommended video card" means recommended and it would play just not be perfect graphics. Anyway that's not the case, you can't play it at all.

For a sequel, it's a disappointment

Considering a new game engine was used, supposedly better than the original Neverwinter Nights, it's a huge disappointment. I have played the game through, examined the reviews and in general have to agree that the system requirements are extremely puzzling. Just where is all this system power being used? Why does it need it? Apparently only the creators of the game know since many gaming magazines are unsure as well as those who have bought the game. The creation of characters is better, although I greatly miss character portraits, which the original Neverwinter Nights had but was again removed for unknown reasons. Without the portraits, the characters all start looking the same. There are limited heads, of which I found a few them to be slightly above average at best and the rest uninteresting. As for bugs, they've had 5 updates and they're still not all fixed; I know all games need them but glaring bugs should've been fixed with the first patch - not still needing to be fixed. As for repeat playability, I place it very low; I've long since gone back to the original Neverwinter Nights again and again.

It's been almost a year and....

NWN2 has been out for nearly a year now, and at this point it's actually running pretty well! The developers have kept working at the patches and the community seems to be delivering some good *free* mods so I'd say that NWN2 seems to finally be on track. I'd recommend patching the game as soon as you get it though, because out of the box there are a lot of issues. That is why I give the game only 4 stars. I'm having a blast with it, but it's been a long haul, and it take someone computer savvy to get it working correctly.

Good luck and have fun. Maybe purchasing with the new expansion makes the most sense for folks new to the NWN franchise...

Looks like something a Pentium III would run

Not much to cover here than what everyone else said...I got a good deal on it over the weekend being that the store I went to was going out of business...6 disks, 1.5 hrs of patching, 2 reboots and tweaking the graphics card later...the game plays like these guys are in molasses...sadly enough I got a 512 nvidia card on my board but the game looks like something from a P III from years ago. I am just hitting the opening chapters of the game and I am frustrated with the camera-work and combat...not really feeling this game at all. If you a hardcore player of this game, by all means...if not...just avoid

Not bad, but not great

This game is resource and diskspace hog, and it is at times hard to see why. Graphics are better than NWN1, but not great. Game play is good, but the player interface is totally different from NWN1, and that appears to annoy a lot of people. Over all, a decent game, but not great. If you like the D&D dungeon crawl (which lets be honest, that is what a D&D game IS), it is a good game. The current patch was over 100 MBs, and solves many problems.

For all those who are upset, remember what NWN1 was like when it was first released. This is a step above, and a good game. But just not quite great.

High-End Only

Due to my love of both bioware and obsidian games I was greatly anticipating this game and bought a new computer to play it (although I will admit a relatively low end new system). The system specs were well above the recomendeded and despite this the game runs incredably poorly. Were not talking a little bit, were talking jumping animations, poor movement, and graphics far below NWN1 to make it playable. I don't know exactly how they managed to pull this off, but its impressive. If you have a top end gaming system I suspect this game would be rather amazing, but with anything beneath that it is sadly a waste of cash.

No fun whatsoever

Linear and cliched plot, lifeless NPCs, horrible AI and a clunky interface -- this game has it all. I gave it a good eight hours of play hoping things would pick up, but no dice.

The toolset for creating your own modules looks promising (although it is, as of this date, riddled with bugs and missing features). Maybe eventually somebody will use that toolset to create a game that's actually worth playing. For now, though, I can't stress enough that this game is a waste of time and money.
