Plenty of flash but lacking in substance

NWN2 is a great jump forward in terms of visual effects. I find the playability, however to be somewhat lacking. What I find most disappointing is the fact that I feel as if I'm being led by the nose through the game. It's a very linear sequence of scenes that allows for almost no deviation. This is a turn-off in traditional RPGing and it's a turn-off in computer RPGing too.

My other major gripe is the number of NPCs. Having a party of four reduces the player to being a spectator more often than not. I often feel like the computer is playing against itself.

Overall, I think I liked the original NWN better. They should have spent less time of fancy graphics and more time of game/plot design.

This is supposed to be fun???

I've played almost every RPG thats been released, I'm still enjoying,"Total Annihilation Kingdoms", "Sacred","dungeon Siege 1&2","NWN 1" and I enjoyed "Diablo2 LOD "until Blizzard Ruined it With thier attempt at Demogogery. This game However is by far the biggest waste of money I have ever spent!I have a state of the art computer, and this game runs like a tortoise even on the lowest graphic settings!
If I wanted to fly an F-16 I would have joined the airforce or the navy!!The gaming interface is so complicated that you could never ejoy it, even if the movement rates an screen changes were fluid enough. Its a war just to have a fight!!A game is something you utlize to relax, unwind and enjoy Yourself! I'm sending it back!!! DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR YOUR TIME WITH THIS PILE OF DISKS!!

The Longest 4 Year Disappointment

Neverwinter Nights: One of the most highly acclaimed RPG titles finally has a sequel!

After literally 10 minuts of gameplay, I couldn't be more disappointed.

Pros-

Graphics are noticeably nicer. Crisp, Clean refresh rate

...and that is about it.

Cons-

The interface is completely and totally abysmal. I have no other way of putting this.

The screen at 1024 X 728 resolution is cluttered and unmanageable.

Your player movement is sloppy and uninspired. I tried to use the default movement keys (WASD) thinking it would make movement/camera angle easier to navigate. Nope. Still terrible.

These are my impressions after 10 minutes.

How on earth did you manage to make this game so unplayable? What a complete and utter disappointment. Did your developers or playtesters even play this? Are you sure you didn't accidentally give them a copy of NWN 1?

Do not buy this; you will be sorely disappointed and out $60. Seriously, save your money for Christmas presents for your family.

how could they mess this one up?

i like some many others loved the baldur's gate games, and then loved the jump forward that was neverwinter nights. i've been waiting for this game for quite some time knowing that it would be great.
except it's not. i've played it for a few hours here and there since i bought it launch day. i normally wait to read reviews before buying any game but figured this one would have to be awesome; never again will i break this rule.
the graphics are ok. the design is very very clunky. you never quite can get things done rapidly enough in or out of battle. too many menus. the radial design of before is far superior.
i think the best way to describe this game is i couldn't wait for it to arrive, and now that it has it just sits taking up massive room on my pc and doesn't get played while i play superior games like gears of war, final fantasy iii, justice league heroes, and marvel ultimate alliance.
one of these days i'll rush through and finish just so i don't feel like someone stole 50 bucks from me, then i'll get what i can for this clunker on ebay.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME (YET)

Do yourself a favor and do some research before buying this game. There's ton of people out there who cannot run NWN 2 on their computers properly (i.e. extremely slow frame rate)even if the RECOMMENDED system requirement is exceeded!! Yes, there are some people who can run this game...played it... loved it... but they are few. Intalling the current patch does not help either. The game developer, Osidian, made some of my favorite game (e.g. Icewind dale, KOTOR 2, Planescape Torment) that ran well out of the box; therefore, this is both surprisng and disappointing. I am certain a proper patch will come out sometimes, and I will adjust my review accordingly, but until then, spend your money on something else.

UPDATE ON MY PRIOR REVIEW (ABOVE):

Yes, this game is patched (version 1.03) and is playable now. I've played it twice. Latest patch fixes lots of bugs but introduced some new bugs that Obsidian acknowledged, and said the it "may be" fixed in a future patch (??). With all the patches, this game is now passable to be called 'in the final stage of beta testing' Yes, it is released way too early just so most people can burn their money and feel pissed off over X-mas. Atari really blew it over this one and their stock value, if you follow it, relected this greedy & bonehead move.
It is really unfortunate, because it is a very good game, but it could have, and should have, been an outstanding game.
Some other reviewers have already nailed down what's good and bad. So all I will add is:
1) Make sure your game rig meets the recommended requirement (especially for video card) -- NOT the minimum requirement. Minimum requirement guarantees that you will have either slow frame rate, or you have to tune down a bunch of eye candies / resolution -- making the game looking not much better than NWN 1 !! (NWN 2 graphic is actually very decent)

2) Perhaps it's best to wait for a couple months to buy this game, unless you are a diehard NWN fan. This game, as is, is nor worth over $30.

Hopefully, Obsidian will learn from their mistake and redeem itself with some outstanding expansion to NWN 2 (and may be even Star Wars - Knight of the Old Republic 3)to make up for this blunder.

Another great game

Neverwinter Nights 2 takes all the great aspects of the first game and expands on them. New spells and abilities (along with the new Warlock class) give you plenty of fresh character choices. Further, your character will look much more pretty as NWN2's graphics are jaw-dropping. You don't need the best system in the world to run it, but you may have to disable a few features to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
The single player campaign is interesting and addicting. There is more emphasis on companions, and they can now be directly controlled, like in Baulder's Gate. You can build your own keep, choosing how to arm your troops and either encouraging corruption to make a buck, or keeping strict standards to serve the King. The story is good, and cutscenes are generally well done.
However, the basic gameplay is pretty much the same. This isn't a bad thing, especially if you liked the first one. The interface is straightforward once you play a little, and is much more like a MMORPG like warcraft. Choosing spells is a breeze, which was not very easy in NWN1.

The toolset is back, of course. There are a whole host of new options that make NWN2 a far more customizable game than NWN1. You can change the color of buildings, choose the tint of a golem's skin, and make a rat the size of a human with scaling. The UI is more Visual Studio style, allowing you to edit multiple areas, scripts, and creatures easier. However, while many aspects of the toolset are easier to use, some are far less straightforward. This is a problem, especially for players who already struggle with the learning curve of module making.

There are bugs with Neverwinter Nights 2, as of release, that much is sure. I found that my game crashed more than once. This is, naturally, very fustrating. All the game's lights are dynamic, which means more power for the toolset and a more pretty game environment, but does mean that things can slow down. Is the game optimized perfectly? No. Will these bugs be adressed? Yes. And the bugs experienced are not enough to ruin the game, even if you are just buying it for the single player experience. But NWN2 is far more than the single player game, it is the ability to create your own world and share it online. Yes, there are problems with this game that were not present with the first game, but it is still an amazing game that delivers something that no other game in the market can: The ability to create your own world, with your rules. And again, the single player is good enough...good enough to keep me playing despite an occasional crash. If you liked the first game, you'll like Neverwinter Nights 2...but waiting a few weeks for future updates to come out might not be a bad idea if you are on the fence.

And I thought they couldn't make NWN any worse...

As a devoted fan of Planescape: Torment, the Baldur's Gate series, and the Icewind Dale series, I had high hopes for Neverwinter Nights. Once I'd played that monstrosity, however, I was convinced that the franchise couldn't have taken a more egregious turn for the worse.

I was wrong.

With camera angles that have to be constantly repositioned, an incredibly constrained camera system (not being able to move the camera more than a short distance from your party, EVEN when the "free camera" setup is used), a restricted "group dynamic" (the group is forced to stay in one unit, to the point of everyone in the party following whoever is being directly controlled), and, worst of all, a dumbed-down combat system (automatic spellcasting, the inability to strategically and specifically utilize spells and abilities, etc), this is probably the most frustratingly oversimplified, "hack-and-slash", strategically *dumb* roleplaying game I have ever experienced.

Don't even get me started on the performance issues. On a 2.6ghz dual-core processor, 2gigs of RAM, and an 8800GTS video card, I couldn't raise the performance bar above "low" without extreme lag. A machine that runs the Crysis demo on medium settings can't even run NWN2 on low settings. That is truly horrid coding.

Avoid this title at all costs. Atari took a glorious Black Isle franchise and turned it into complete crap... and this title is even worse than its predecessor.

Atari just lost a customer. I'll never buy anything produced by them again... and I'm leery of buying any BioWare developed products at this point, as well.

Falls way short of the original (See expanded review)

This is more like Icewind Dale than NWN.

If there was a demo I wouldn't have bought it.

If you like NWN you probably won't like NWN2. They removed many useful things NWN had, made it so large pw's won't be possible, there's hardly any monsters.

A horrible let down

Hold off on this game

The original NWN was buggy on release, but this game is so buggy you may not even be able to install it.

Wait a couple months (or more) for the game to be fixed is my recommendation. The recommended minimal requirements are no where even close to what you'll actually need to run this game at an acceptable level, so consider getting it after next years hardware upgrade.

The game will certainly be worth purchasing in a couple months, but stay away for now and help force the devs to fix it. I'm shelving it and will update my review once it's fixed enough to play.

doesn't quite hit the mark

I've put a few hours into NWN2, gotten my main character up to level 6 or so. First of all i'd like to say i find the UI to be a bit annoying, i'm hoping the mod community will be able to help out with this in the near future. Most of your options are located in a button in the bottom left corner of the screen. If you want to view a characters inventory you have to select the character from the upper right corner then hit the button in the lower left corner then select infentory. Why not just let me right click the character portrait and click on inventory, or right click the character in game? It's the same process to see character info, level up, spellbook etc...

I found the varity of classes and races to be very nice, there's also a great selection of prestige classes. Which all adds to the replay value.

The storyline is nice, although it is linear. You're given different options during conversations which can affect your alignment but so far as i can tell they don't change the plot. I actually had a situation where i willingly rescued a thief from a group of guards but i didn't want to add her to my party since i was playing a rogue. However after saying "no" once i was given 3 more options all three basically saying "yes". She must have some major role in the story later on.

The game graphics are nice but not great and i find the game lagging a bit on my PC. When i move the camera the frame rate goes down quite a bit. I have a copy of Oblivion which has vastly better graphics and run it on Ultra High settings with no difficulty.

My PC:
AMD Athlon 4000+
1 gig memory
geforce 7800 GT 256mb

All and all not a great game but not bad, if you're a big DnD fan pick it up and enjoy. If you aren't, it's not a "must have". In the future the mod community may take off and run with this game improving the UI and creating more adventures which would greatly increase the games value.
