This is the best football game yet. And the best thing is you can play with teams from Europe. The graphics, presentation, and overall play are better than any other game on the market. It's only too bad that NBA Live 2001 couldn't be this good.
EA Sports did Awesome on this one!

This game is my favorite so far of all the PS2 games. Don't let it trick you into thinking EA does this well on all its other sport games, they seem to lack what Madden 2001 does. I would try the others games first, but for football this is definetly the one!

Madden 2001 for PS2 is definitely the best football video game ever. The graphics are outstanding compared to NFL2K1. It is easy to understand what to do next (like saving, franchises, practice and the other features). There is cool also music (which I have learned the words to by playing so much) by rapper Xzibit. You will start to sing the songs as you are setting up the game or buying "Madden Cards."
During the franchise mode, you have control over everything. During the off-season you can have a draft, sign the old players for a salary you agree on, sign or fire the coach, etc, etc. Or, when this gets kind of boring and time consuming, you can skip these steps and let the computer do it. But it is a cool feature that makes you feel like the real GM.
Then during the actual games, there is a thing called Madden Challenge, which gets you points to buy "Madden Cards." There are several different kinds of cards. The first 150 cards are of current players which give them ratings boosts during the games. There are three different levels of cards, some giving the most boost. There are historic player cards which put historic players in the free agent list. There are cheat cards which can be used anywhere from one play to one game, based on the level. There are secret stadiums cards, too. There are also secret teams like former Super Bowl teams, and an ECKO brand team, Monsters, etc. The Madden Cards are a great addition to the game and give you a reason to want to play another game. If it wasn't for the Madden Cards I definitely wouldn't play as much, even though there is the francise mode.
This is a great game and is definitely a good game to buy, especially if you liked the previous Madden games.

It has great gameplay and graphics it also has many different amazing game modes. If you are looking for a present it doen't get better than this. Madden 2001 was one of the first games I got with my PS2. I was having a lot of fun with it. All the hard hitting, realisticness and enhanced graphics made it a great game. You can play as almost any team in the world from NFL to All-star and madden teams to past teams. And if you are into the canadian football leauge(CFL) Madden has that too. Compared to the prior Madden games on all the systems the running game has really been enhanced and more realistic. You can break tackles at the line hurdle diving linebackers and spin away from safties. Before the snap it even tells you where you should run and where the blocking will be.This is a varible that can be changed. The passing game is pretty much the same as prior games.
During the game you can go for the madden challenge. You try to accomplish various tasks to earn points which can then be used to get madden cards. The madden cards can be cheats such as super tackle breaking, players such as Curtis Martin(This increases abilities), or teams from the past not alreading included. All these cards can be put in play during or before a game.
But after a while of playing you might get a little, tiny bit bored because it gets on to being the same thing over and over unless you have tight games. Which is very common in higher skill levles. But all in all its a pretty good game.
Sweet Graphics and Easy Control, make this game awesome

This game has awesome graphics, easy, but fun control, and is by far the best football game I've ever played. It offers a wide variety of teams, and even includes the older teams. The plays are semi-easy to control, and make it more fun by being a little less complicated. The graphics are very precise and you are able to even see the players faces crystal clear. The only remotely bad thing about this game is madden and his dumb commentating.

This is the best video game I have ever played. The graphics are great, the players even breathe frost in cold weather. It is hard to put your controller down! Recommend for all ages. Slight learning curve. John Madden's comments are repeated over and over again. The franchise mode is fun to play. The detail in every aspect is overwhelming. MUST MUST MUST BUY!

i am what would be considered a "non-gamer". i use my ps2 for pure, unadulterated, indolence; and madden 2001 is one of the best partners for this. the graphics are incredible and the way i describe it to my friends is: "it's like watching a game... except you're controlling the players."
a couple complaints i would have is that defense is very difficult to play. and more importantly is the way many of the catches are made. it gets a little boring if every catch is a one-handed, sprawled out, diver. i would like to see some more incompletes (in order to make it more like real-life), but we can't have everything.
all in all, though... for anyone who plays ps2, for the sake of doing nothing, this is an amazing game for it.
