Instead of writing a whole new review, I will instead copy and paste what I wrote on a message board. I think you should read what I wrote about Madden 2002 seeing as how my thoughts are not really an in-depth review of the game. Instead, it's about... well, YOU be the judge. Read on please:
Can you believe I NEVER owned a football game before and, to my knowledge, only played one once in my entire life? This was in 1994. I just never liked football until a couple years ago.
Anyway, I bought Madden 2002. I know it's an old game with outdated rosters, but that doesn't matter to me much. I just want to have fun with the game. What kind of advice do you have for someone who understands football, but, other than that one time in '94, has never played a football game before?
Will it take me a long time to understand what I'm doing? I can't fathom at the moment what it must be like for the quarterback to throw the ball to one of his players. It must be really hard to throw the ball to the correct guy and have him run as far as possible. I know nothing about what the speed of the game is going to be like either. All the players on the field might move around too quickly for me to have time to react to anything.
The reason I wanted Madden 2002 is because this game has a classic mode where you can go back to how football video games were played in the early 90's. This is good, so in case the gigantic 3D graphics become too much of a problem for me, at least I might have a shot at glory playing the game in an old-fashioned way. I wonder how many weeks or months it will take until it feels comfortable to play this game? How long will it take until understanding exactly what's happening on the field makes perfect sense?
Anyway, this Madden game has me worried because looking through the instruction booklet, each button does something different. I don't even know what most of these things mean. "cycle defenders" "secondary shifts" "power/swim". What, we're playing football underwater now? :)
Unfortunately, I'm having a pretty tough time with the game. The part I said a couple days ago about worrying about the speed of the game seems to be true- I have hardly NO time to react to the defense and offense of the computer opponents. It's like making one mistake will *really* cost me. I did manage to get a touchdown with the Cincinnati Bengals. I guess luck was on my side.
I personally don't think I have the necessary skills to understand which buttons should be pressed at the exact moment a play happens. It seems all the buttons are used on the controller (including the four buttons at the top) and apparently I have to press the right button at *just* the right time. If I make a mistake, the other team will do some serious damage to me. If that's going to be the story of Madden 2002, well, then I'm done with it. Simple as that. If you actually CAN improve the more you play the game, I will continue playing it.
It's too confusing to me how, after every play, a bunch of options appear on screen asking me what I want to do next. I guess having your players line up on the field in a certain way is very important. I never have any idea what the right move is supposed to be, so I just pick one and hope for the best. I figure "hey, I'm not a genius". Unfortunately the game seems to be designed for people who know football like the back of their hands. There REALLY needs to be an easy mode.
That classic mode I mentioned about how you can play football the way it was played in the early 90's is pretty tough also. Not to mention SLOW. Each play takes forever to execute because you keep being asked questions about the next play you want to do. To add insult to injury, there seems to be a waiting period after you pick an option for the next play. It's like these really old and dirty graphics actually require LOADING. The music is insanely catchy, though. The title screen music, I mean (there is no music when playing a game)
All I know when watching football is that you have three attempts to get across the yellow line (a gain of 10 yards). Apparently you need to be much smarter and have a better understanding of the technical aspects of football to be able to execute the proper plays in video game form. These Madden games require you to be really smart and knowledgeable about the game itself. What I need is someone who has experience with Madden games to come over and show me what to do. Without help, I'm a lost puppy in the rain.
What bothers me the most is that, since they keep releasing new Madden games every year, it's expected that everyone who picks up the newest one will understand the game immediately. The people who create these games don't realize how much trouble regular fans of football will have playing a game. You CAN'T just tune in every Sunday to watch a game and expect to understand video game football. It doesn't work that way.
It's entirely possible that someone (like me) could experience the Madden series for the first time in February 2007, despite the fact that the series has been around since the early 90's. I would love to see someone play the game I just bought (Madden 2002) to see how you actually play the thing.
More thoughts:
To be honest, one of the reasons I never played a football game earlier (or watched the sport on TV) was because I got pushed around a lot in gym class playing the game in high school, and this gave me the bad impression that football is for big bullies :)
For me, only one sports game is needed per gaming console. I don't want to keep buying each new Madden game (or whatever) every year *just* for minor updates. WAY too many unnecessary sports games are available, in my opinion.
I'm giving the game 4 stars because I'm holding on to the hope that one day I *will* have a better understanding of how the game works and improve my skills.
AWESOME!!

The graphics are sweet! The gameplay is amazing. If ur a football fan, this is a must have. You will have hours and hours of fun everyday with this game. Only con is that it gets boring after after 2 weeks, then you have to play with a friend to make it more fun. But overall, this is a great game an worth every penny.
Madden 2002 will not dissapoint you!

Madden 2002 is byfar the best Madden game yet. The graphics are awesome and the gameplay is a lot better. The computer is a lot harder, although running the ball is a bit easy. The franchise mode allows you to play (and coach) for 30 consecutive seasons.
The only bad thing about the game is the commentary, as in all the madden games it is a bit repetitive, but is better than the past commentary.
This game is definetly worth the buy. I highly recommend this game!

It's hard to compare different genres of games, but Madden is clearly the best football simulation out there yet. I haven't compared it to NFL2K2 for PS2 yet, but from previous versions I would expect it to be more arcade-like. Madden is NOT arcade like. Madden is really for football fans, although the training mode is a huge help to new players. But the gameplay focuses you on reading defenses, timing your passes, and thinking the game. If you just want to run up the score, its not your game. If you want a true football simulation, there has never been a better one.

I have owned a Playstation for about 3 years. Just recently I got a Playstation 2 for Christmas, and the game NFL Madden 2002. This would have to be one of the best football games I have ever played.
This is a basic football game where you pick your NFL team and compete against the computer or a friend. It has many different modes in it. One of the most basic modes is exhibition. This is where you play one game with the computer or a friend. If you want to play a real season you can go to season or franchise mode. The difference in these 2 modes is in franchise you play 30 seasons compared to 1 in season mode. You also get to do things that a real NFL team would do like trading players or draft picks. After the season you get to sign players that have been released from other teams and draft college players to your team to make your team better. In year 2 there is another draft, where you release 5 of your players for a new team to take (Houston Texans), but not all of them are drafted.
Madden 2002 has very good graphics. When you see close ups of the players or replays the players look very real, because you can see the details of the players' faces and pads. While you are doing the plays the camera zooms out a little, and the graphics are a bit worse but they are still good. The only bad things about the graphics is that the players names on their back look like they were glued there, and when the players helmets are off their heads look about 5x bigger than normal and a lot of them look similar. The biggest glitch in this game is you can't pass! I can throw the ball perfectly every time and still only be 10 for 25.
This game has a great commentary, with John Madden and Pat Summeral. EA sports did a great job on the commentary, Madden and Summeral do not say the same things over and over again. There also a button you can press were Madden will pick a play for you and will tell you why you should choose the play. The computer player is more difficult then other football games.
This game is suitable for everyone from kid to adult. I would recommend this to anyone that has been looking for a football game for Playstation or Playstation 2.

I was a fan of the madden series since Madden '94 on the SNES. My favorite Madden game of all time is Madden 2000 for N64. When I got my PS2 I had only one game (GTA3) so I went to Blockbuster and rented 2 games every Friday for about a month. I rented Madden 2001 and I thought, "This is the same as Madden 2000 on my N64, but with better graphics." I felt no need to purchase it, I was content with my N64. When I played this game at a friend's house I automatically bought it. It's great, period. The computer does blatently cheat, but this problem plagues all of the football games. Also baseball games, but that is for another review. I would give this game a 5, if I could use my sacred N64 controller to play this. I keep fumbling with the controlls when trying to spin and whatnot, but, once again, I believe this is due to the 500+ hours of playing Madden 2000 on the 64 (I am serious when I say 500+, I got it in the beginning of the summer and played it non-stop until school started, sad but true, I still am trying to rebuild my social life.) If you are new to the series, I recommend this game. Also, instead of buying 2 more games for the PS2, buy yourself a 64 and get Madden 2000, because it is the greatest game ever, I mean that.

Madden 2002 tops all maddens and I used to think 97 was the best. It's got to be the most realistic sports game going. It is so realistic that the odds of making a first down on fourth down are very little. The instant replay is great and plays in wide screen. And the music in the game is great when you're doing something like a darft or just looking at you're team. NFL Blitz has to be the worst football games because it is not even real football, its wrestling on a football field.(2003 will be even better)
