it's a football game

Instead of writing a whole new review, I will instead copy and paste what I wrote on a message board. I think you should read what I wrote about Madden 2002 seeing as how my thoughts are not really an in-depth review of the game. Instead, it's about... well, YOU be the judge. Read on please:

Can you believe I NEVER owned a football game before and, to my knowledge, only played one once in my entire life? This was in 1994. I just never liked football until a couple years ago.

Anyway, I bought Madden 2002. I know it's an old game with outdated rosters, but that doesn't matter to me much. I just want to have fun with the game. What kind of advice do you have for someone who understands football, but, other than that one time in '94, has never played a football game before?

Will it take me a long time to understand what I'm doing? I can't fathom at the moment what it must be like for the quarterback to throw the ball to one of his players. It must be really hard to throw the ball to the correct guy and have him run as far as possible. I know nothing about what the speed of the game is going to be like either. All the players on the field might move around too quickly for me to have time to react to anything.

The reason I wanted Madden 2002 is because this game has a classic mode where you can go back to how football video games were played in the early 90's. This is good, so in case the gigantic 3D graphics become too much of a problem for me, at least I might have a shot at glory playing the game in an old-fashioned way. I wonder how many weeks or months it will take until it feels comfortable to play this game? How long will it take until understanding exactly what's happening on the field makes perfect sense?

Anyway, this Madden game has me worried because looking through the instruction booklet, each button does something different. I don't even know what most of these things mean. "cycle defenders" "secondary shifts" "power/swim". What, we're playing football underwater now? :)

Unfortunately, I'm having a pretty tough time with the game. The part I said a couple days ago about worrying about the speed of the game seems to be true- I have hardly NO time to react to the defense and offense of the computer opponents. It's like making one mistake will *really* cost me. I did manage to get a touchdown with the Cincinnati Bengals. I guess luck was on my side.

I personally don't think I have the necessary skills to understand which buttons should be pressed at the exact moment a play happens. It seems all the buttons are used on the controller (including the four buttons at the top) and apparently I have to press the right button at *just* the right time. If I make a mistake, the other team will do some serious damage to me. If that's going to be the story of Madden 2002, well, then I'm done with it. Simple as that. If you actually CAN improve the more you play the game, I will continue playing it.

It's too confusing to me how, after every play, a bunch of options appear on screen asking me what I want to do next. I guess having your players line up on the field in a certain way is very important. I never have any idea what the right move is supposed to be, so I just pick one and hope for the best. I figure "hey, I'm not a genius". Unfortunately the game seems to be designed for people who know football like the back of their hands. There REALLY needs to be an easy mode.

That classic mode I mentioned about how you can play football the way it was played in the early 90's is pretty tough also. Not to mention SLOW. Each play takes forever to execute because you keep being asked questions about the next play you want to do. To add insult to injury, there seems to be a waiting period after you pick an option for the next play. It's like these really old and dirty graphics actually require LOADING. The music is insanely catchy, though. The title screen music, I mean (there is no music when playing a game)

All I know when watching football is that you have three attempts to get across the yellow line (a gain of 10 yards). Apparently you need to be much smarter and have a better understanding of the technical aspects of football to be able to execute the proper plays in video game form. These Madden games require you to be really smart and knowledgeable about the game itself. What I need is someone who has experience with Madden games to come over and show me what to do. Without help, I'm a lost puppy in the rain.

What bothers me the most is that, since they keep releasing new Madden games every year, it's expected that everyone who picks up the newest one will understand the game immediately. The people who create these games don't realize how much trouble regular fans of football will have playing a game. You CAN'T just tune in every Sunday to watch a game and expect to understand video game football. It doesn't work that way.

It's entirely possible that someone (like me) could experience the Madden series for the first time in February 2007, despite the fact that the series has been around since the early 90's. I would love to see someone play the game I just bought (Madden 2002) to see how you actually play the thing.

More thoughts:

To be honest, one of the reasons I never played a football game earlier (or watched the sport on TV) was because I got pushed around a lot in gym class playing the game in high school, and this gave me the bad impression that football is for big bullies :)

For me, only one sports game is needed per gaming console. I don't want to keep buying each new Madden game (or whatever) every year *just* for minor updates. WAY too many unnecessary sports games are available, in my opinion.

I'm giving the game 4 stars because I'm holding on to the hope that one day I *will* have a better understanding of how the game works and improve my skills.

Well,
I just want to say that this games truly rocks! I love the graphics, the animations, sound bytes, season and franchise mode and the hype of going thru a season/play-offs and going all the way against the computer in all-madden mode. As a matter of fact I just lead my San Fransico 49'ers to a "Super Bowl win in year 1 in franchise mode against the Indianapolis Colts on Chirstmas eve 2003. (final score 24-21)I am getting ready to shape my roster to start year 2. In fact I love the on the field graphics even better than "NFL MADDEN 2004", although the 2004 version has more features both on and off the field I still think the overall on the field animation and clear cut look around the field and view of the players is better and more realistic than '04. Heck, I didn't care to buy the 2003 or 2004 version. I'am quite satisfied with "NFL MADDEN 2002". I hope that the 2005 game is similar in on the field style and graphics as 2002, then I would like to upgrade perhaps. I won't deny I wish the play-by-play comentary was a bid sharper with each play and situation, sometimes I hear good old John Madden say a comment that has nothing to do with what's really going on in the game. For instance, I am playing a game right, and its barely still early in the first or second quarter and say I am loosing by 7-10 points and I decide to run the ball and John says, its no longer time to run the ball any more. Could it be that I play 6 minute quarters? Oh well, things like that. I also would love to see more hype and celebration after each win! Special after a play-off win, and oh yeah, please make more on the field celebration and commenatary after getting and winnig the SUPER BOWL! How about showing the legendary Lombardy Thorphy please!

Your game guides come in very handy thank you! I do own the game guide for "MADDEN 2002" it has made me a much better player.

I hope this games keep getting better in every way!

Better than PS1

I played this game on Playstaion and i was disappointed with the fact that the Left-footed kickers such as Joe Nedney from the titans was Right-footed. That has bugged me for the longest time. If you want to make a realistic game, make the players realistic liek having Left-Footed kickers. Well, I played this game on PS2 and I was blown away. The different camera angles, The auto-zoom, the players names are readable on their backs. This game just is amazing.

I used to think that Tecmo Superbowl for the original Nintendo was the best football game of them all. Now that I've been introduced to Madden 2002 it's opened up a whole new playing field. With awesome play-by-play coverage and commentary by John Madden and Pat Summeral and smooth graphics and great handling, and the addition of Madden cards and managing your own franchise, Madden 2002 is the best football game of 2002.
Bottom Line: Madden 2002 rocks

I think that this is the greatest football game ever. I have madden 2003, nfl 2k3, and I had nfl 2k2 and I believe that this is better then all of them. I love the player introductions and what happened to them on 2003 it is dull. It has pretty much the same gameplay and graphics, but is a lot more fun. If you just want graphics go with 2k2 or 2k3 if you want gameplay definitely go with madden 2002, and it also has a great franchise mode.

After a full year of Madden 2002, I am convinced this is the best football game out there. The series of Madden games seems to get better and better every year as I own the entire series.
I began playing Madden 2002 at home in exhibition mode, season mode, and even franchise mode. The computer does tend to get a little easy when you get your team rolling, even in All-Madden difficulty. After a few months, Madden 2002 went somewhere into my entertainment system and began to collect dust with the rest of my used games.
The re-birth of my Madden 2002. I am stationed on a US Navy warship and a few months ago my ship departed on a 6 month deployment. One of the few things I grabbed for deployment happened to be Madden 2002. This game is awesome. Using the Custom League, me and the guys are able to have a great season only playing eachother with no computer involved. We usually get around 6-10 people and kick off a season on our off time and go at it using created players and fantasy drafts. The compitition is awesome! I never relized just how bad of a player I was until I started playing people from all over the US on my ship.
Why this game is the best:
Gameplay: Awesome... D-backs knocking the ball away, RB's juking, WR's diving for catches, Kickers kicking the game winning field goal into the wind for the win.
Graphics: Looks like the real thing. Some tackles look a little stupid, like the guy is breaking his back.
This game is alot of fun, I recommend creating players and playing as many different people as humanly possible to get the most out of this game. This game is FOOTBALL at its best!

The graphics are sweet! The gameplay is amazing. If ur a football fan, this is a must have. You will have hours and hours of fun everyday with this game. Only con is that it gets boring after after 2 weeks, then you have to play with a friend to make it more fun. But overall, this is a great game an worth every penny.

Madden 2002 will not dissapoint you!

Madden 2002 is byfar the best Madden game yet. The graphics are awesome and the gameplay is a lot better. The computer is a lot harder, although running the ball is a bit easy. The franchise mode allows you to play (and coach) for 30 consecutive seasons.
The only bad thing about the game is the commentary, as in all the madden games it is a bit repetitive, but is better than the past commentary.
This game is definetly worth the buy. I highly recommend this game!

Madden 2002 tops all maddens and I used to think 97 was the best. It's got to be the most realistic sports game going. It is so realistic that the odds of making a first down on fourth down are very little. The instant replay is great and plays in wide screen. And the music in the game is great when you're doing something like a darft or just looking at you're team. NFL Blitz has to be the worst football games because it is not even real football, its wrestling on a football field.(2003 will be even better)

I do not Recomend this game. First of all, if you do things to quickly, the game crashes. The graphics are O.K., but the computer [isn't ]. Unless you want to control your player, they are a long way from the ball. Also, occasionally, the quarterback tends to throw to a reciver the computer picks. On defence, the pass defence [isn't good]. You cannot intercept easy-to-catch passes. And, the man to man coverage is horrible. Personally, I don't recomend this game.
