First - let me say that Madden 2002 does play very well. The graphics are great - this game is a lot of fun. I buy this game for the franchise mode, so this is really a review of that section of the game - and what needs to be improved for 2003!
Injuries: What does it take to have one of your own players get injured? Not that I want them hurt - but the realism is gone when the whole league is suffering key injuries and all of my starters are in perfect health! Why even have back-ups? They never see any playing time.
The Off-season needs some work. It seems, in previous versions, that the league would offer trades to you based on who you put on the trading block. I want that feature back! Trading here is really boring as you simply scan the whole league - waiting for the green bar to shoot up when the other team accepts your trade. How about teams trading with one another during the season?
Free agency: This part is always fun but where are the superstars? They are simply always resigned by their current teams so there is never anyone out there worth bidding over. You rarely see anyone with a rating over 70 on the board. This feature needs to be deepened.
Holdouts: I have yet to even see one-does this ever happen?
The purpose of any game is to keep you coming back to play it over and over. EA needs to take out some of the monotony and put some more into Franchise mode. Perhaps, one year, we will see it happen.

Madden outdoes itself every year. They keep adding features and the gameplay gets better and better. This is by far the best football game and probably the best sports game. A close second would be NCAA College Football 2002. The reason for this is that your graduating class on NCAA can be used in the MADDEN 2002 Draft. which is really neat. The feel and gameplay is very realistic on Madden with lots of extras. The only thing that bothers me occassionally is Madden's comments. But hey its his game he can do whatever he wants.

I have been reading all of these reviews and was wondering how anyone could give this game less then 4 stars, too my amazement people don't like this game which leads me to believe either a) They don't like football or b) they have never played any other football video games because there ain't a football game around that could shine this games shoes my personal favorite in the reviews was person named David Ellis from L.A. he must work for Sega lol. So in conclusion if you own a PS2 and you like football then please do yourself a favor and pick this classic up.

First off, I decided to give this 4 Stars, because of its lack of being original.
Not much difference between Madden 2001 and Madden 2002, I wouldnt have even of bought Madden 2002 if my Madden 2001 disc didnt get scratched.
At first, it was said that it would be on DVD, ya right! Its still on the CD-Rom (c'mon!). So I figure EA is gonna try to gouge another year off the Madden Series on the old CD-Rom, and next year move to DVD, sad but true.
Sure the game is slightly better, but if you already have Madden 2001 you should rent Madden 2002 first before you decide to buy.
But still a excellent game, no complaints, except after you choose a play, it sometimes when taking you back to the field the FPS slows down, it can be lived with, but for me its nothing but annoying.

Madden 2002 for Playstation 2 is an excellent game. The graphics are remarkable just like Madden 2001. The Franchise mode is great and only could be better if you had to start out like a offensive coach or defensive coach. The best thing about the whole game to me is that you can download the seniors and underclassmen who want to leave from college early off of NCAA 2002. I can not wait to see what EA sports does next year to top it.
Have you seen me lately? My family hasn't!!!

Hands down, the best PS2 game on record. Hands down the best sports video game ever. Where do I start? Gameplay 10, AI 10, Graphics 10...Stunning, better than real life football, no joke..
Season capabilities are endless. 20+ yr franchise mode. Realistic game play. The computer runs with running QBs (Vick, McNabb) well. In fact, this is the best game ever for QB rushing. Much like the real NFL. I can't wait to get home to play it again....
Great!!!

This is an excellent game! The graphics are so realistic, you think your gonna get tackled. The gamemakers really took advantage of the awesome PS2. The people almost look like the real guys. This game has excellent gameplay but the only thing is that the controls are a little complicated but you get used to them after a while.
Very good, but if you have 2001 don't get...

I first heard about this game coming out a few months ago. I was so excited having played the heck out of 2001. I went to Toys R Us the day it came out and bought it. There are many extra games and subtle graphical differences, but I realized I haven't been playing it at all. It's been a month and I still have not finished a season yet...I have 1 game to go. So I would say that if you have 2001 don't get it and rent it first. It's fun, but just for a week or 2.. That is unless you are very hardcore

I just got a PS2, along with Madden, and WOW. I went from a PC gamer to PS2 and the difference is amazing. This game is sooooo much smoother on PS@ than on pc. The graphics are stunning, and it really is like watching an NFL game on TV. If you like football you owe it to yourself to get this game.

I have owned a Playstation for about 3 years. Just recently I got a Playstation 2 for Christmas, and the game NFL Madden 2002. This would have to be one of the best football games I have ever played.
This is a basic football game where you pick your NFL team and compete against the computer or a friend. It has many different modes in it. One of the most basic modes is exhibition. This is where you play one game with the computer or a friend. If you want to play a real season you can go to season or franchise mode. The difference in these 2 modes is in franchise you play 30 seasons compared to 1 in season mode. You also get to do things that a real NFL team would do like trading players or draft picks. After the season you get to sign players that have been released from other teams and draft college players to your team to make your team better. In year 2 there is another draft, where you release 5 of your players for a new team to take (Houston Texans), but not all of them are drafted.
Madden 2002 has very good graphics. When you see close ups of the players or replays the players look very real, because you can see the details of the players' faces and pads. While you are doing the plays the camera zooms out a little, and the graphics are a bit worse but they are still good. The only bad things about the graphics is that the players names on their back look like they were glued there, and when the players helmets are off their heads look about 5x bigger than normal and a lot of them look similar.
This game has a great commentary, with John Madden and Pat Summeral. EA sports did a great job on the commentary, Madden and Summeral do not say the same things over and over again. There also a button you can press were Madden will pick a play for you and will tell you why you should choose the play. The computer player is more difficult then other football games.
This game is suitable for everyone from kid to adult. I would recommend this to anyone that has been looking for a football game for Playstation or Playstation 2.
