Let me begin by saying that short of the one handed, behind the back passes, 2001 was a great game. The programmers decided to overcompensate for last years flaws by not only making the computers defensive line and defensive backs GODLIKE, but by making human controlled Offensive lineman revolving doors made out of swiss cheese. Thats really not the worst of it though.
Where do I begin about trying to do an effective job of pass coverage against any decent (or even not so decent) reciever. Anyone who has played a couple of "All Madden" or above difficulty seasons in this game can tell you that the computer can beat you deep pretty much when ever it decides it wants to. No matter WHAT your DB's, FS's or SS's stats are in relation to the reciever they're matched up with, you are ALWAYS slower, ALWAYS shorter (for some strange reason every reciever is 6 inches taller than the defender guarding them) and ALWAYS out of position. It is not a case of bad coverage technique. I'm no Madden professional or anything, but when your step for step and in the last second and a half of every deep ball you suddenly lose three steps and have NO chance of stopping the catch, thats bad programming.
It's almost as if they took all the "Cheese plays" that you could run on the computer for the last two or three versions and decided that they we're gonna let the computer get you back for taking advantage of it all those years.
Needless to say the surreal imbalance issues on "All Madden" or above RUIN football game after football game. Every contest devolves into a situation where all of a sudden the computer recievers turn into sayers, moss and largent, and trying to shut them down is tottaly hopeless.
You can also forget about winning big in this game. When the computers down they throw, and when they throw they score, simple as that. To add insult to injury you will get sacked 6-8 times a game, and you will have the ball wobble out of your quarterbacks hand from being hit as he throws almost every other passing play. Also, for some reason no matter how gingerly you press your pass button, your reciever will often drop the ball from velocity shock. You CANNOT throw a bullet pass without madden noting that you need to put "touch" on the ball. How exactly are you supposed to put "touch" on the ball when:
1) You have almost no time to throw on 60% of plays because of terrible blocking, and the "wind up" animation your quarterback goes through before throwing is soooooooo slow that your almost guaranteed to be hit or sacked as you release.
And
2) You have about 1 second to squeeze a pass into coverage or it WILL be knocked down. You can't win. If you lob, by the time it gets there your guy is covered by 3 DB's, and if you chuck it he can't handle the velocity.
The questionable AI is a shame, because every other element of the game is fantastic, from the graphics, to the franchise mode with modified divisions and the Houston Texans expansion draft in year two, the realistic body control, the ball physics, the tackling animations, etc...
I'm a Madden junkie so I had to buy it, but I'd almost have to say it's not worth the 50 bucks.
They did it Again

Anyone who says Madden 2002 is not the most realistic football ever is sadly mistaken. EA did a great job in for once, making you concentrate on every play you play (just like in real football). Long gone are the days when you would just use two and three plays and on defense just blitz. The realism of game is incredible. Tight spirals, ducks, broken tackels, one hand grabs. The computer in this game is incredible. You have to be aware of each and every play you decide to chose. The season it itself is incredible, the stats, just a damn good game.
The only things I would like to see improved on would be more defenses, gang tackels, all purpose yards counted for each player, along with scoring leaders. A few years ago in the Triple Play series EA did a great job in reflecting the size of the crowd to how good your team was doing. I think adding this to the Madden series would be fantastic. Also factoring the weather more into the game. If Tampa Bay is playing Green Bay in December, Green Bay should have a better chance at winning. Having the crowd be sparce if it is raining or snowing.
Nonetheless Madden 2002 is as good as it gets!!!!!

IF YOU ARE A FOOTBALL FAN BUY THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!
This is absolutley stunning in evey way, the graphics are amazing the sound are realistic and the gameplay is out of this world. This games seems to milk the PS2 and use it well, everything about it is smooth. There are only 2 negative points as far as I can see 1) you can edit the players in a season so all attributes are 99.... far too tempting and 2)It makes all other sports games look rubbish. It can be summed up in 3 words....
BUY THIS GAME!!!!!!
AVERAGE COULD BE BETTER

THE ONLY THING THATS BETTER IS THE GRAPHICS....WHY THIS GAME STILL ISN'T ON A DVD YET I HAVE NO IDEA.....ITS THE SAME OLD TIRED SAYINGS OF MADDEN AND PAT....SOME OF THE RATINGS FOR PLAYERS ARE OFF TOO...PLUS ITS WAY TOO MUCH OF FLUFF IN THIS GAME ALSO....THE MADDDEN CARDS ARE NOT NECCESSARY....THE FRANCHISE MODE IS ITS BEST FEATURE........BUT FOR NOW ITS THE BEST FOOTBALL GAME OUT THERE....
What I expect

I just got the PS2 and this is one of the only games I own. And what a game it is!
I have a friend who ownes the DreamCast system and owns the NFL 2K1. I thought that was the cadillac of football games that I have played untill I got my Madden. Now both of us are addicted and won't even hook up his system anymore to play football.
I love the graphics the controlls and the realism of the game. No longer can somebody rush for over a hundred yards on my defense unless they really know how to run the ball and have a good back to do it with.
I do have one thing that I would love to see done. My firnd and I love to perform drafts and then play the teams against each other. But the only way to really do that is in tournament mode, franchise mode and season mode. However, I want to save my team and be able to play it in exibition or to put them in a playoff situation. We have found a way around this, buy creating a team and trading around players, but that is too much hassle. So my suggestion is to be able to save custom teams to a ps2 card and be able to upload them to play against another person with a team on another ps2 card. Just like in Grand Tourismo. Now that would be awesome and just what I am looking for.
Now I just have to look forward to a good baseball game to come out for the PS2.......... MLB 2002.
Close to perfection

Ill keep it short with the pros and cons of this game
Pros
- Unbelievable graphics
- Ability to modify a players attributes , example Garrison Hearst was ranked a 60 in the default mode but I made him a 90 since he is doing so well this season
- Awesome instant replays
-Create a player ( if you create lets say Tom Brady or Joe Montana, Pat Summeralll will actually say his last name during the game instead of just calling out his number )
- Modify A.I, ( if your having trouble passing or running or getting a sack just modify the A.I to your ability, some people still don't know that this is for)
- Easy play , if you are having trouble passing turn on the easy pass mode and your player's cursor will turn green whenever he is open
-Cons
Takes a while to really get a feel for the game
Certain things you have to really work at like not getting sacked, if you go back to far with your QB after a snap he will most likely get sacked, and some other little things
-Punts are nearly impossible to run back!!!!!!!!!!
Every punt the defenders get right by your blockers
- If you land a deep pass its' pretty impossible to run it all the way the computer will always catch up to you no matter how far you beat them by
-Some of the ratings for the old school teams areridiculous, Emmit Smith was ranked a 74 on the 94 Cowboys, the 85 Giants had an overall defense of 81, What's Up With That,
Overall this game is great , especially if you are a big NFL fan like I am, for the more casual football fan I recommend NFL 2k2 which is much easier to play but doesn't have all the in depth features like Madden and I doesn't have the graphics like madden does , but is more like NFL Blitz which you can get good at right away, In the end I'm going with Madden as best football game for PS2 it gave me a much more realistic feeling than NFL2k2

Madden 2002 is a big waste of money, it is basically as the same as the previous title. The passing game is horrible, and the defense is worse. Every time a reciever caught a ball open, they score because the defense runs so slow. Keep your money and save it for nfl blitz 2002.....
Good but slow compared to xbox

I played this on the PC and PS2. The PC verison has bad controls. Its very tough to press L1, R1, L2, R2 on the PC. I found it better on PS2. Graphics are very good for a PC game except the graphics during tackles. Sometimes the runner gets tackled and falls down without even tackler touching him.
Great Game, But Lacks things also

Ive always been a fan of madden games and the graphics are great on the last 2 games but theres a couple things that are bad. First of all the challenging every time i try to see if he was inbounds, i go to challenge and click ok to check spot of ball every time it just shows the quarterback throwing and then it stops and lose a timeout they hafta improve the challenge. second the pass is horrible, of course it used to be very eay and now they say all new a.i an better pass defense well lets see keyshawn or rod smith catch a ball wth our newly improved madden defenders, i love how i played the rams and caolina and carolina almost beat me and they suck. Otherwise the games great, maddens commmentary is always been repetetive but what can we do ea sports never listens to us dont they play the game and say oh he just said that every play, but the game gets a 4 just lacking the challenge, passing and commentary
