Ick!!!
The graphics are good, the music rocks, but that is all my friends. If you really want to experience what this game has to offer you'd be better off buying a poster book and the soundtrack from the movie.
The battles were easy, the loading times were long, the animation blew, and there were many programming and gameplay errors that ruined the game for me, two of which I will detail:
1.) When you fight the Balorg (or whatever the fire breathing dragon is called) as Gandalf, Aragorn keeps butting in as a cinema scene to give you a health item. This is very nice of him, but if you are not a complete ... you shouldn't need the extra health. Also, while the clip plays the battle remains in progress and you have no control over your character while his [bum] gets kicked. It's very annoying and happens every time you make a good strike against the boss. I think they must have put it in there because it would have taken longer to actually make the battle a genuine challenge.

2.) I played the game for maybe 5 hours, getting VERY CLOSE to the end of the game. I was at the part at the top of the mountain where you (as strider) rescue the hobbit from the dragon-thing. I saved my game at the end of the previous level and then saved it again at the beginning of this one for backup, under two different save files. When I got beat the first time in this battle my continue save file did not load up. I tried the backup save from the end of the previous level and it also would not load up. I did not finish the game because I would have had to start all over from the beginning and go through all the terrible suckery that runs rampant throughout the game once again.

-What a rip-off. ...

OK. This game is fun until you have to be gandolf. He has magic that doesnt kill, a [mostly ineffective] sword, and hes [very] slow ... Aragorn however is great fun to play even though they should have used Viggo's real voice. Frodo is just plain annoying. For the most part because his weapon is a small stick. I personally suggest buying or renting Two Towers. It lets you choose your charachter and theres no "sneaking". If you do wish to play this game because your an avid tolkien fan then do yourself a favor and rent it. Or if not then get Two Towers. This game is full of pointless deeds and really annoying combat which is very hard to get accostumed to. Personally i think they should have used the actors real voices like TT. I hope this helps you make your decision.

Actually, rent two games, because you'll finish this one in under 3 hours, and won't want to play it again (NO REPLAY VALUE WHATSOEVER!!!). There's enough to keep you fairly entertained for that time period, but boring battles, lame bosses, and an overall lack of challenge will make you wish you had looked deeper than that "official" Tolkien product. Another complaint that I have is the lack of autosave at the end of each mission. The fact that this game so religiously follows the book and works some of the minor passages into entire levels saved me from rating this game a 1.

This game is perfect for people too lazy to read the first book in the trilogy, but who want to see all the stuff that got left out of Peter Jackson's first LOTR film. Even so, my advice to you is this: save yourself [some money]by going to see The Two Towers instead of buying this game. You'll be far more entertained.

Sadly Underrated

This is a fantastic RPG. True, it's not very long, but length does not always translate into greatness. And any complaint about how this game deviates from the book is completely beside the point. I hardly think we ought to complain that the designers don't have us planning Bilbo's birthday party and preparing to leave the Shire for the space of a decade or so (I forget exactly how long it is) and walking virtually unmolested to Buckland. This is a video game after all, and a bit of adventure is called for! And adventure is delivered (especially after the Shire is left behind). If the worst one can say of a game (or any piece of entertainment for that matter) is that it ends too soon, then I'd say the designers have earned their keep and then some! The graphics are wonderful as well. In fact, the only part of this game I would change is the singing done by Tom Bombadil and Goldberry.

This game is far superior to the over-hyped and overrated "Two Towers" game by EA. I hope Vivendi plans to make their own versions of the last two books.

Entertaining!

I decided to start playing this game with determination to finish it. I have yet to accomplish my goal, but I have had more satisfactions than frustrating moments with this game. I waited until it was on special for 19.99. It's a pretty good game I have enjoyed it with my son. We are intrigued to know what happens next and we keep on playing for hours. Very entertaining.

Why people only like the games based off the movie is stupid

This game is rather better than I expected, I thought that it was just going to be a spin off the movie, but by a different company. But actually this made by the same people that made the animated version of lord of the rings. Which I am a fan of, I liked this because this better describes the hobbits and is more colorful than the movie games. This is a superb game, I just wish that you could go a little more off-road than the game allows.

The game starts when Gandalf tells frodo that he needs to take the one ring to rivendell because it needs to be destroyed. So you begin running around the shire (my favorite part) doing errands for hobbits and getting ready to leave hobbiton. But you run into farmer maggot and the ring wraiths. Very much fun if you ask me. You finally meet aragorn, and he helps you out a little bit. You can play as him until you get to rivendell, then you take your turn as gandalf. And you switch on off between characters.

The loading times can be boring and the dying can be a bore as well but I thought that the game was well done other than that. It really catches tolkiens thoughts and ideas about middle-earth. Rent it before you buy it!

Great Game!

This game was sooo much fun. I can't beleive anybody thought this game was boring. I think it is better then the lotr games based on the movie because you don't just fight orcs and trolls,etc... the other games were fun but this game actually requires skill. This is not the game for you if you haven't red the books or sit around playing rpg shooter/fighter games all die. I played the PC version and it's got to be harder than the PS2 version.

Give This Game Some Credit

Come on people!!! This is not a bad game. Even though it is not as good as EAs "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" it still is good. The graphics are well done, the sound is great, the game play is brilliant, and the story line Universal Interactives "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" has to offer goes by the author J.R.R. Tolkiens "The Lord of the Rings" book trilogy, which I have read, very well. Unlike EAs "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" Universal Interactives "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" goes by the book trilogy not the movie trilogy. So people should stop being critical about this game and comparing it to EAs "The Two Towers" because it is based on a book not a movie. For fans of "The Lord of the Rings" book trilogy Universals "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" is a great game which I highly recommend buying.

Stop Being So Hard On This Game People!!!

I don't see why there are so many complaints about this PS2 game being bad! Universal Interactive's The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is a wonderful, and one of my favorite PS2 games. The graphics are good and well detailed. The sound is crystal clear (without static) and has a great musical (score) to offer. The storyline goes by The Lord of the Rings book trilogy, by J.R.R. Tolkien, very well. I am a huge fan of the books so that is only one of the reasons I like this game so much. Infact I think that Universal Interactive's Fellowship of the Ring PS2 game is better than EA's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers which is based off the movies not the books. But anyway: The gameplay The Fellowship of the Ring PS2 game has to offer is terrific! The gameplay only lasts up to ten hours so that means that this game is not too long nor too short (the gameplay time legnth is set just right). The Fellowship of the Ring game is a little strategic and hard at times; but not all the time. If you are only a fan of The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy and not the book trilogy then don't buy or play this game because you probably wouldn't like it (get EA's The Two Towers instead). But if you are a fan of The Lord of the Rings book trilogy and like to play video games then I highly recommend you buying Universal Interactive's The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring for the Sony PlayStation2 (PS2).
