Well done

I got a good impression of this game from the get-go. It begins with you as Frodo in The Shire. I was enchanted with the lovely and appropriate music that set the mood for The Shire. And graphically, The Shire looked so peaceful and tranquil, what with the pumpkin patches and the rolling green fields, that I wished I could go there and escape this world. A very good first impression indeed!

I'm not exactly sure what you would call the gameplaying style of this game - it's very linear and mostly straightforward, so it's not really an RPG per say; but it does have a bit of an RPG feel to it. As the game progresses, you also play as Strider and Gandalf. The fighting system is not that deep, nor is the RPG aspect of this game. But the lack of the deep, deep elements of either is defintely not a bad thing. It's nice to just quest right along and lose yourself for a bit. Nice graphics combined with the flowing-if-not-condensed story that features scenes right out of the books (Tom Bombadil, the Barrow-Downs, etc...)The voice-acting is great and so are the cut-scenes that move the story along. And the music is always appropriate and conveys the intended mood (like I mentioned earlier with the enchanting melodies of The Shire to the impending doom in The Mines of Moria).
I have read some complaints that this game is much too short - as I have not finished it yet, I cannot say. But perhaps some people are not appreciating this game as they should. It easily does a good enough job to let you detach a bit from reality.

I must say, I am dually impressed by this game and The Two Towers (which plays much differently - pure battle action) - I have never seen games converted from movies so well done... honestly!
If this and The Two Towers are a bit short, so what! I have a family now, and don't have the time to play a game for weeks on end anymore - I like the shorter games that can be completed within a rental or two.

Tolkien purists shant be disappointed, I think. I surely am not.

The Lord Of The Rings The Fellowship Of The Ring is an awsome game for the Playstation2. The graphics are great and the movement of the game is not hard at all to control. The orcs and trolls are fun to fight in this game. The storyline in the game goes along very well with the book "The Fellowship Of The Ring By J.R.R. Tolkien." Tom Bombadil will appear in this game which is great! Considering he was an important character in the book. The Fellowship Of The Ring Video Game goes more by Tolkiens first book than in the movie trilogy.

Too Short

I was playing it, and then i beat it and i was like "what? is my ps2 busted?", no it's not, it's just that the game is that short, i beat it in three hours, it doesn't have much replayability, but if you're an avid Tolkien then it's a game you gotta play. It's true to the book and while it's short, it is very gorgeous, surreal makes really nice landscapes, if you want to play a better game then get Drakan: The Ancient's Gates, it's a much longer game and it's basically the same style except you get a really cool dragon.
Read "The Simillarions" by JRR Tolkien, it's really good!

A Great Game!

You people who gave this game a negative review are dumb! I happen to think that "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" video game is great for the Sony PlayStation2. The graphics this game has to offer are terrific in every way. The sound is good because it has no static and features a wonderful music (score). The game play is great because the game is a little strategic and challenging at times (its not too challenging all the time). But, don't expect "The Fellowship of the Ring" to be a long game because it isn't. It took me only ten hours to beat it; so therefore its not too long nor too short. And the storyline "The Fellowship of the Ring" has to offer goes by the author J.R.R. Tolkiens "The Lord of the Rings" book trilogy very well. Ignore all negative reviews about this video game. "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" is a great game for the Sony PlayStation2!

Well, I'll be honest and I haven't even been able to get out of the shire. THE *bad word* BLACK RIDERS ALLWAYS CATCH YOU! I gave this game a two simply because it might've gotten better had I not given up after 20 tries, but trust me, don't get this game if you're like me and have no patience.

3 stars for the casual player, 4 for the devoted Tolkien fan

It is very difficult to rate this game - as a lifelong fan of Tolkien I want to lavish praise, because the subject matter is strong, the atmospheres match up perfectly to those that I imagined in the book, and the plot is followed rather faithfully. However, as a video game, it doesn't translate into more than a few hours of suspenseful, challenging fun - though I thoroughly enjoyed my trip through Middle Earth in this game.

The best thing about this game is the way it captures the feeling of the books - the colorful, pastoral hills of the Shire, the foggy darkness of the Barrow Downs, and the beautifully-rendered underworld of Moria, which was probably the highlight of the game for me. It uses the same basic engine as Drakan to create vast landscapes and assign 'side quests' at various points, though there is little choice in what path you take, as you must follow the plot of the book for the most part. The music is varied, atmospheric and nice, and the controls are fairly basic and easy to master, making gameplay progress smoothly.

Fans of the books will love the opportunity to become immersed in the world of Middle Earth. Most gamers will progress very quickly through the levels, though the very beginning presented some tedious quests and one challenge that was so frustrating and seemingly impossible I almost gave up, until I got the hang of "sneaking." I also found the lack of a detailed map to be very frustrating, as you cannot zoom in on the area you are exploring to get a handle on your direction.

If you are renting this casually, and are not deeply into the world of Tolkien, it may not be worth the steep purchase price. For one thing, there is virtually nothing for the characters to pick up in the game other than health. There are no additional weapons or items to collect and not a lot of opportunity for advancement in skill. You switch between Frodo, Aragorn and Gandalf at various points in the game as the plot dictates, but the player has no control over which character is in play. It might have been interesting to choose between them, giving the game three possible outcomes, but as it stands, there is little replay value unless you want to wander through this dark and beautiful world performing the same actions each time.

An excellent week's rental, and I would definitely pick it up at a used or discounted price, as I would like to return to this world.

Great Game... but missing something

Ok, I am a big time Tolkien Buff. I've read all the books: The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings... the lost tales, EVERYTHING Tolkien wrote that had to do with Middle Earth. With that said, I'd have to say I was a little disappointed in this game because it just seemed to be missing something. While this game is 10 times better than the "Two Towers" based on the movie, it lacks something that I can't exactly place. I guess I wish it was more RPG like or something were you could pick your own character and do more exploring. Also needs more side quests I think. I think I only found one here. I gave it 4 stars cause I was addicted to it but like I said, I wanted something more. It deffinatly needed to be longer. They could have just squeezed the whole Trilogy instead of breaking it into 3 shorter games (Treason of Isengard comes out late 2003 which will continue this game allowing you to play as Legolas as well) The game is fun none the less. You get to play as Aragorn, Frodo, and Gandalf. Gandalf I think is the best cause he's good with the sword as well as some magic spells that are kinda cool. There are plenty of things to fight (not as much as EAs Two Tower game) and has quite a few puzzles that you need to work out. The hardest by far is the begining where you have to sneak by the Ringraiths. The only bad thing is that just when the game seems like it's just about to get to the good stuff, *POOF*, it's over. The final boss is not what I was expecting but it was kinda cool though pretty easy. Trust me, when you get to the final boss, you will not relize that that is the final boss till you beat him (unless someone told you before hand) Anyways, a great (not excellent) game for a Tolkien fans collection. An ok game for everyone else.

A Very Good Adventure and Action Game

The first surprise I had when I started to play this game was that it was made by a different company, so if you have any other Lord of the Ring games, the graphics are very, very different. the second surprise was that the lines are really taken from the book rather than the movie, so for fans of the movie who have not read the book, it may seem as if they've made a mistake. The movie, for the most part, follows the book, but goes astray in several places. The game sticks to the book, and adds in additional features that the movie did not have - such as Tom Bombadillo.

In the game you have to find objects and people, and fight creatures such as wolves, orcs, and a Balrog. You don't get to choose which character you play. The game assigns specific characters for certain sections of the game.

Hints:
1. Don't get frustrated trying to get past the Black Riders. Remember, you have stones to throw for a reason - use them to distract the Riders so you can get out of a tough situation. Also, you can jump over the low fences and run through fields - do it! As long as the Black Riders shadow does not fall on you, they can't get you. Just be careful.
2. Keep Gandalf's health as high as possible. Use magic much more than fighting wolves and orcs with your sword. If you don't your health will be too low to beat the Balrog when you get to the Mines of Moria. The game does not give you the ability to go back to a specific part of the game and start from there again unless you save each section of the game separately - NOT by writing OVER the last section you saved. I would suggest saving each section separately so if you realize later on you need to redo a section to give your character more health, for example, then you can do it.
3. When trying to find your way down the mountain as Gandalf, remember, even though you're going down, sometimes you have to go up to get there. Doesn't seem to make sense does it? It will when you play that part.

Last, if you need any help getting through any section of the game, there are a few walk-throughs online that will help you. Just be creative and remember, it's an adventure game as well as an action game.

nothing to say

The Truth About theGame

Alot of people who have reviewed the game must not have read the books, which probably is the reason in which they did not like it. For instance, at the final boss, it is not a dragon, its a skinless steed in which a Ringwraith rides (black riders) and it is not a castle in which it guards...it is the Dark tower of Barad Dur.

I will not further state an opinion because it will not help you to decide if you will like the game, I will merely list features the game has that you will need:

A little bit of patience for the loading times.
A good imagination in which you can explore fictional worlds.
A passion for the LotR books, written by JRR Tolkien.

I recommend this game mainly to people who want to play with characters that the movie left out and do not want to sit hour upon hour on the same level, as I have experience in the Two Towers, another game in which you should check out.
