Another fun Mario game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 0 / 0

This game is entertaining. There's a number of different styles of play depending on the type of level and situations. These can be frustrating at first but also add some more challenges. That level of challenge has been missing from a lot of Mario games which seem to only have gotten easier since the original Super Mario Bros game.

I love this game!

I love mario games! This one is especially fun.

It is possible to beat the game without actually beating every single level. I like this, since there are a few levels that were just too difficult for me. There are some levels that you can't get to without passing others, but I was able to play most of them and I was able to get to the end level without beating every single one. It's pretty easy to figure out what you are supposed to do. I didn't have to resort to walkthroughs at any point. Also, I didn't feel like reading the manual, but the game gives little hints every now and then for tricks and things.

The only con is that, like all mario games, it takes WAY too long to get to the actual game. You have to watch all the beginning animations before you actually get to play. They insist on always forcing us to watch the whole backstory. I would rather this just be an option in the menu, and instead just let us start playing the game immediately.

I can't wait for the next mario game!

a smart culmination of the mario genre thus far

I got my Wii and this game on the same day, so I basically learned how to play Wii on it. As an original Mario fan who got his brand new Nintendo at age 5 in the '80s, I love the throwbacks to all the previous Mario games. I'm currently halfway through the Super Mario Galaxy game, but I feel I know enough to write a review:

Pros:

This game has, in a smart way, incorporated many of the cool things from previous 2D Mario games in a 3D setting. We have the return of cool powerups like the fireflower, along with some new ones like ice mario, a bee suit, ghost mario, and some others I probably haven't discovered yet. There are a lot of classic sounds like going down a pipe, or getting a powerup, that go back to the NES days, rather than the SNES Mario world days. Also, a lot of classic music is used, albeit remixed and pepped up a bit.

The structure of the game is systematic without being too restricting. The game consists of traveling to different galaxies, which hold 4 or 5 "worlds", each of which have between one and three missions to complete. This allows for a ton of different levels, scenarios, and introductions of new characters and powerups. You don't have to complete anything in a particular order, except once you complete the Bowser world (one in each galaxy), it unlocks a new galaxy to discover next.

The diversity of characters, enemies, and bosses is impressive. Usually the world that you're in prepares you to fight the boss at the end. Your powerups are usually world-specific (just like the old games), and are instrumental in completing the missions.

Cons:
Sometimes the camera angle is tricky. Unfortunately I never owned an N64 or GameCube, so I'm basically new to 3D navigation. Walking around on tiny planets that sometimes have gravity issues makes it no less frustrating to navigate. Instinctively, if you press left on the nunchuk, Mario should walk to his left, but it actually just goes to the left of the screen. That means if the camera suddenly shifts (which it does) while you're moving in one direction, you'll suddenly start moving in another direction after the shift.

If Mario gets hit by an enemy, he does this "owowow" thing where he jumps up and runs around like he's on fire. This means if you get hit on a narrow walkway, you might automatically die just by falling off the edge. There may be a way to avoid this, but I haven't found it yet.

Some of the cut scenes are long and drawn out, and apparently you can't always skip through them. If you're doing a level where you have to talk to someone at the beginning, it makes you talk to them each time you do it, so if you have to do something 12 times (because you kinda suck like I do), it gets a bit tedious.

Overall I think this is a stellar game. Based on reviews I've read about Mario Sunshine, it seems to be a die hard old school fan pleaser in comparison. Lots of nostalgia, lots of diversity, and an extensive world/boss/enemy/situation repertoire that won't easily get old.

UPDATE: 8/14/08

I'd like to add a big fat "con" to the list. After getting about half of the 120 stars, you can "go to the center of the universe" and save the princess (which I did). I was ok with this because I thought I still had 60 or so stars to get and hours more of great game play. As it turns out, most of the rest of the stars of the game are comet stars, which means you're just replaying levels you've already done under more difficult circumstances like time limits, racing a phantom Mario, or collecting coins in hard to reach places. This means the game is a lot less "deep" than I thought, and you pretty much have to go through most of the levels again and get more frustrated. This has reduced my game playing time from a few times a week for a couple hours to barely once a week for less than an hour. It's just frustrating and not as much fun; a chore.

it is just great

This game is fun but don't be fooled into thinking it is a 2 player game. The 2nd players role is insignificant. It is fun for one person though and the graphics are great!

Arguablly the greatest title this generation

I have been gaming for a long time and nintendo is the most memorable part of my early childhood. I have played many games through all of my gaming years and I have to say that this is arguably not only the best 3D mario game to date, as well as the best game this generation, but quite simply one of the greatest games Ever created. If I could describe it in one word, that word would be masterpeice. It is truly a work of art that comes along ever so rarley. I will go into the specifics.

Gameplay: This is truly platforming at its best. It controls pretty much the same as mario 64 did. but better. You press A to jump, press A three times to triple jump, press Z and then A to td a back flip, and move mario with the analog stick. Of course there are also some wii specific controls like shaking the remote to make mario spin which works flawlessly and feels fantastic, aiming at the screen to pick up star shards, there are also levils where you will ride on a glass ball or steer a manta ray and that also feels great. What realy sets this game apart is its new gravity affects. It is a joy to just stand on one planetoid, press A, and float to another. Things will go upside down, rightside up, and all over the place, it is truly a workm of genious. This game probably has the best levil desighn of any 3D game period, I have never seen levils desighned the way they are in this game, there is just so much care, thaught, variety, and imagination in all of these different galaxys. The boss battles are truly epic, esspecially the ones with bowser, and each require uniqe ways to beat them. The galaxys are all seamlessly connected through the huge spaceship called the comet observatory, which is a very well desighned hub. I could go on and on about how amazing it is but simply put, this is gameplay at its best.

Graphics: These are easily the best graphics on the wii. It proves that wii is more powerfull than consoles prior to it. It has crisp textures, great lighting effects, huge draw distances, advanced partical effects, heat distortion, transparencies, specularity, and bump mapping. The explosions are spectacular, the charecters look great and animate flawllessly, especially bowser whos hair moves in the wind, lava looks just like the real thing and will almost make you feel the heat from looking at it. Galaxy proves though, that graphics are much more than just polygons. It as a Beutifall colorfull art style that is varied and spread throughout all of the galaxys with different looking enemies and planets, and galaxys alltogether, it portays the final fronteir in such a beutifall way that its just breathtaking. One of the best artistic acheivments in a game ever. This is a beutifall game.

Sound: the Orchestrated soundtrack is absolutley Amazing, you will find yourself singing and humming them through all of your day to day activities. It has classic mario themes as well as new ones like bowser epic boss battle music, space junk galaxy, gusty garden galaxy, melty molten galaxy, and many many more. It arguably is home to some of Nintendos finest soundtrack in history.

Replay value: You will never tire of this masterpeice, you will go back and replay it over and over and over, people will still be playing this game fot generations to come.

Super Mario Galaxy is a truly Groundbreaking acheivment. It is a game that comes along way to rarely and I cannot stress enouph how amazing it is. This game will be looked back on as a classic and I cannot think of any game this generation that I would rather play on any console. This game is Absolutely a must buy if you own a wii and if you do not own one, it alone justifies the purches for one. This is truly one of the greatest games of all time.
