I was lucky enough to have gotten a Wii just recently, and was recommended this game by the employee at the store. Having played ALL of the Mario games from past Nintendo systems, I decided to give it a go.
*POTENTIAL SPOILERS*
At the start of the game you get to run around the Mushroom Kingdom during what seems like a party or festival. Lots of sights to take in, and a great opportunity to test out the controls.
I found that the control setup mirrored Nintendo 64's version of Mario almost to a "T". You have your single, double and triple jumps. You have your wall jumps, backflips, cartwheel flips, etc. It plays out well, and makes full use of the joystick on the Nunchuck.
Soon you find that the party gets crashed by Bowser and his minions, and you get sucked into orbit by some huge mechanical contraption. From here, you end up stranded in space but get a little help from a group of "stars".
The way each level is set up, you're basically on small moons and planets. You don't set foot on actual ground like the original Mario games. But, instead you get to run around the entire moon structure often times going upside and defying gravity (if there's even any out there in the first place).
Each level is considered a galaxy (with one to four goals that yield star rewards), and you'll get to explore a decent amount of them within the first few hours of playing. They'll slowly introduce new power-ups and skills such as, Bee Mario, Invincible Mario, Boo Mario, and others without overwhelming you.
I've played for less than a dozen hours, and I can say that this game is truly original and FUN. The controls take a bit of getting used to, mainly the camera angles with running underneath the structures. But, if you picked up a Wii and want something that will utilize the skills necessary to play the system, this will be the one to get. Not to mention, should you be a fan of Mario... you honestly can't ignore this game.
We love this game!

My fiance got this for Christmas and we've been playing it probably daily since then! We love that the levels are challenging but possible. We really like the creativity of the game and it's longevity. It uses Wii capabilities really well, too.
I haven't played video games since Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis. Wii and this game have gotten me back!
I never played Super Mario 64, but...

I've thoroughly enjoyed the experience that Super Mario Galaxy has given me. It's a little on the easy side at first, but the difficulty slant is great for non-gamers who don't exactly understand game mechanics. In fact, my older sister LOVES the game, and she usually only plays games like Tetris! The storyline isn't exactly the deepest in the world, but it's very cute! I bought this game when I found my Wii, and so far, it hasn't disappointed. I heavily recommend this game for just about ANYONE!

We all have known Mario for years but I mean Mario in space! How much Cooler can this get? When you start the game Bowser comes to take Peach. You get on the castle but you get blasted into space. When you arrive on the Comet Observatory (The main place in the game) Rosalina tells you what she is doing and How to get Peach Back from Bowser to get to Bowser you have to get enough Power Stars by going to multiple Galaxys and finding Power Stars. Once you get enough power stars and have moved to the last Galaxy then you get to the boss galaxy, Boss galaxys only have one level but instead of getting a power star you get a Grand star. You get one Grand star in each dome. once you get a grand star the power opens in a new dome.

I've been playing video games since the Apple II/Commodore 64 days; I even programmed a few simple ones. Since then, I've played thousands of games of every type imaginable. Additionally, I value my opinion very highly, as should everyone. So when I say that Super Mario Galaxy is the best video game I've ever experienced, there's really no other option than for you to buy it and play it. Right now. Do it.
play all the way through!

With this game the fun never stops! Keep playing, get all the power stars you can, and new surprises will reveals themselves after the credits. This is my favorite Wii game...but I am a little partial to Mario to begin with.

I love this game! I had a blast playing this game and I will continue to play it even though I "beat" the game. I am not a serious gamer and haven't really played video games since the days of Super Nintendo but I got a Wii for Christmas and have gotten back into it. This game is pretty fun, it was challenging for me but not overly so. The only parts that I didn't enjoy were the race-type boards that you have to beat. These are nearly impossible and I did end up getting a bit frustrated. But overall I really enjoy this game.
Dashed hopes...

After thoroughly enjoying Mario Kart Wii, I decided to give Super Mario Galaxy a try. I started playing the Mario games with the first one, and have played most of the main titles, including Mario 64. I'm not an expert on gaming, but even I could tell that this game was lacking. Here are my top complaints:
This game seems to be made for young children. The plot is weak, the characters are cartoonish, and the levels are not mentally challenging. Puzzles are something I have come to expect after playing Mario 64, yet there are no puzzles in this game. The most taxing part of playing it is simply in mastering the new controllers, which happens in the first few levels.
The wacky camera angles drove me crazy in Mario 64, and they are back in full force. Mario jumps off ledges and runs into foes because you can't see in front of him, and sometimes you can't see Mario at all (when he gets stuck behind something all you can see is his shadow).
Nintendo should also have made it possible to skip the dialogue sections. These are a constant source of annoyance, as most of what is said is not helpful for gameplay and you have to repeat the same segments over and over and over again every time you die.
The throw-backs to the old games are fun at times, but I was very ready for some new scenes. Just like in Mario 64, this had the water world, the ghost world, etc., but nothing really changed. I expected more characters, different and interesting worlds, new moves and activities, or just some general changes. Unfortunately, these were the same old things we've done before. What kept me going was the hope that there would be something better to come, and I was disappointed.
Those of you out there who enjoy games but have to scrimp and save to buy them will understand my final complaint. This game costs $[...], but does not deliver $[...] worth of game!!! I want secret levels! I want more games-within-the-game!! Give me more to do!
All in all, I expected more bang for my buck. Although this was fun, it just doesn't live up to the hype. Alas, another disappointing Wii game.
