Why not 5 stars?!

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 0 / 1

why not give it 5 stars, u say. i say because of the tedious gameplay. what i mean is that the game gives u only three chances to be stealthful, alarms. they do this because it is based souly on stealth rather than rambo style gunblast ho-downs.
the game gives you a pistol the first few missions instead of the standard everyday surpressed lightweight multi-launcher semi auto rifle, along with a few gadgets such as nightvision, you get thermal after a few missions along with rifle, and the optic cable which lets you see under doors with your trusty thermal and nightvison goggles. however some of the gadgets must be deployed thorugh the multi purpose lancher from the all mighty rifle, that i was explaining to you about earlier. the game evolves around one person, sam fischer, trying to find two other top-secret mercenaries who were supposedly captured...and well u can find out what happens. as i said the game is based on stealth and therefore the pistol aiming is slow along with the rifle, i no only two weapons.. bummer..gadgets...kewel, anyway..., if you do get caught you must either escape or kill them but if you try and kill them it will be hard to do so because of the aiming and....unrealistic damage is...well u get it, what i mean is they decrease all damage from guns and amplify the damage from fist fighting. I am not saying it isnt fun or anything, it is but, it just becomes strenuous after dying and dying and dying because the people get better weapons than you. on the other hand you do get lighting on your side because the less lighting the more cover and the more cover the more chance you have of not being discovered. sometimes the lighting isnt always realistic.. i know... sometoimes if you are in the edge of a light eclipse thingy they cant see you.

Eh, I've seen better

Before actually playing it, I was planning on buying it anyways, because of all the good reviews it had gotten, but thank God I played it at a store because it really didn't please me at all. In the stealth-action genre, no game, and I mean no game at all, can even come remotely close to the entertainment that the Metal Gear Solid series provides. The gameplay in Splinter Cell is quite unique, but there are weird things that you have to do like when you pick locks, you may be stumped, sitting there for 30 minutes trying to figure out how to pick the thing.

To say I've seen better does not do my feelings justice. In fact, I think that I'll go dig out my copy of Metal Gear Solid (the first one!)

Nice, but man it's still hard!

I've played this for Xbox, and could never get past that level, where if you trip one alarm you failed(Yea, go ahead call me wuss), but on the PS2, I finally got somewhere, but thisgame is still hard tho.
Pros:
Nice graphics, for a less powerful system than the Xbox
Yes, the game is a bit easier
The stealth action is fun
Nice sound effects
The voice acting is good, considering they have to be quiet
The replay value is set on wether this is for you or not
This is definitly a STEALTH action game
Cons:
Man I think I said this is hard enough times
You con't shoop people when you stick them up
I hate the gun system, and always will
Sometimes the enimies are dunb(A terrorist was staring at me in the dark, but he oculda saw the 3 lenses on sam's head.

This game is pretty awsome if you're up for a extreemly challangeing game. But this game doesn't have the style of Meatal Gear Solid 2, which is why I choose Metal Gear Solid 2 over this. But if u wan't to know what this game is all about, I'd try renting it first.

Best PS2 Stealth Game Currently But...

I bought this game expecting the best but realising the flaws of the game are apparent in this version than the XBox original. First, the level design has gotten simpler in an effort to streamline the original. However, in an effort to do so, the layouts of the buildings have gotten quite absurd. For example, they now have stationed an office (with the 2 programmers in Kalinatek) behind a wall, aside a narrow corridor. In the last part, with the Palace, they have stationed cameras on bushes! The XBox version had a more realistic design. Next, the addition of the new suit and mission is nice, but overall, the additional mission wasn't too exceptional. Additionally, the loading times for the PS2 version were too long, and the checkpoints were not save points at all on the PS2 version, like the XBox version. Lastly, the boss fights (especially Grinko's) were stupid and quite annoying. They streamlined the boss fight too much, and it lacked the realism (and extreme difficulty) of the original.

Now to the props...
The addition of binoculars were great. They were definitely helpful, especially given the fact that I used the SC-20K's scope as binoculars in the XBox version. Next, the cinematic movies made more sense and added much more to the story, although the XBox version of the opening cinematic was much better, with the inclusion of the Chemical Brothers' technobeats. The PS2 version made Sam seem much older with the orchestral music, a disappointment on my behalf. Lastly, some of the modifications they made in enemy and their placements was greatly appreciated, and it did intensify the situation a wee bit more.

Overall, a very good game and very good PS2 game, but the game is not up to par with the original.

You gotta ask yourself one question. . .

Do you prefer the fantastic realism and the almost possible storyline of Splinter Cell, or the anime-esque feel of the MGS games, with the emphasis on long cinematics? I think MGS is swirling 'round the bowl, unless they can pull out another hit pretty soon. For all you die-hard fans out there, consider this: Ubi Soft has already announced a tantative release date for the follow-up game to Splinter Cell. Where's mgs3?

The gameplay is great, the controls are very natural, (for those of you complaining, grow up! Learning new controls is part of the fun of this game, part of what makes it unique! And the ps2 controls are infinitly better than the Xblock)

Ah yes, the split jump. Not so useful, but SO COOL! I find myself using it much more than I need to, just to giggle as the stupid guards wander around ten feet below my crotch! HAHAHAHA I could kill you at any time!

While the repetition can get a little old sometimes, it can be very fun because there are a lot of different ways to complete missions. Should I shoot out the lights and pick off the guards one by one, or sneak by unnoticed? Should I tease them with my distraction cam, or gas them and let 'em snooze?

Bottom Line: FUN, fulfilling covert ops game that kicks anything Solid in the junk, blows anything Liquid out of the water, and just plain flushes RAIDEN.

Good, but a few flaws

I bought this game when it first came out for ps2. total mistake. it soon went down to $40, then an audacious $20. It's not that the game is bad, it's just too slow and frustrating. Don't get me wrong, the graphics are awesome, the lighting realistic, and storyline interesting. But it's just not fun enough. I have a new theory, I just thought it up. These are called video GAMES. a game should be fun, and try to be real, but the fun comes first. It's amazingly realistic(except when your arm goes through a wall... ) but it's almost too realistic. it's not really focused on fun. it got so realistic that it's not a game anymore, it's just a reflection of the NSA(well, do we REALLY know that?) That's why i gave it just 2 stars for fun, but five for overall. I hope this review was helpful.

hated it

This game may have next generation graphics, but the guys arm still goes through the wall. The stealth part is dumb because you can be hiding in pitch dark blackness with your goggles and cell phone alight and a guy right in front of you but he wont notice. you dont shoot anybody and if you do you have to hide the body, i found that really neat, but you never shoot anybody. if you are seen you will die. you will die because the "bad guys" have automatics and you have a dinky little pistol. All-in-all this game is boring

It's a good start

I liked this game but the missions were just too hard. This is the beginning of the Splinter Cell series from gaming mastermind, Tom Clancy. This game dominated the ps2 world for quite some time now and the second series, Pandora Tommorow is even more better. But eventually this game will get boring. So if you liked Metal Gear Solid, this is the more better version of it and has great realistic graphics and excellent stealth mode gameplay. It's great, one of the best games to come on the ps2, and there will be more games of the same kind to come.
