Starts Off With a Bang! . . . and Ends With a ???

Being a 1st person shooter, WWII history and Saving Private Ryan fan I was looking forward to this game for a while. It starts off with one of the best opening levels I've ever played (and that's saying allot). The heavy scripting is so well done it completely immerses you into the world of a WWII soldier. Trying to keep this short so I'll hit on the major points;

GRAPHICS
Very good. Nice explosions and character modeling. Lacked some of the punch of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, but will not disappoint you.

GAMEPLAY
Fantastic. There are different types of levels from running around like in most FPS, to being the gunner on the back of a jeep, it's all fun.

SOUND
Great. From the 'clink' of your rifle's clip running out, to the enemy soldiers yelling out 'Actung!'. Music is always appropriate and adds to the overall effect.

LEVEL DESIGN
Amazing. This is where it really shines. I have never been going through a level and caught myself thinking, 'This is a great game.' while playing until now. The opening level draws you right into the action. The Omaha Beach Landing mission, yes it is straight out of Saving Private Ryan which I think is a great thing, absolutely amazed me. I had been reading about it for months before release and building it up in my mind the whole time. It did not disappoint. Having said that, the last couple missions were not that good (kinda boring actually), but the first 3/4 of the game are well worth the cost. The last level gives you no warning that this is the end which did upset me a bit.

CONS
The ending [wasen't so good] and came on too quick. You will need a good system to enjoy it...

Buy it and enjoy . . .

Wow! Pure fun in a WWII atmosphere...

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (MOH) is without a doubt one of the most entertaining first-person shooter games I've played in quite some time. The game begins a U.S. Army Ranger on a secret mission in Algiers and continues with a journey through the history of the western European campaign in WWII. In MOH, you find yourself riding Tiger tanks, sniping Nazis in the rubble of bombed-out European villages, sabotaging U-Boats, assaulting Nazi camps in a torrid blizzard and even storming the Beaches of Omaha.

Usually, when I replay missions in first-person shooters (FPS), it is because I am bored with the game and looking for anything that will allow me to enjoy it again. While playing MOH, I found myself purposefully restarting missions because I enjoyed them so much. The mission that allows your soldier to storm the Beaches of Omaha is straight out of the opening scene in the film "Saving Private Ryan." If you are a fan of FPS games that use snipers in single-player missions, you will get a kick out of MOH as it has some of the best sniper missions I've ever played in an FPS. Each mission in MOH is a change from the previous one. I've rarely seen so much variety in single-player missions in an FPS.

The graphics for MOH are impressive but you'll need an expensive video card to see the full effort artists put into this game. It's rare but I don't have many negative things to say about MOH. Grenades are a large part of any FPS based on WWII and I feel the mechanics for grenade throwing in MOH could be better. MOH needs more objective style maps for multi-player but the MOD community is working on it at a frantic pace and supposedly the developers will be releasing more maps in the future as well as an expansion pack.

ACTION FANS - 5 STARS - If you prefer an FPS with quick and easy movement/mechanics, you might not enjoy MOH as much as other FPS games. In other words, MOH is based more in realism than non-stop action. Your character moves slower, the weapons have kick back, you can't jump like an NBA basketball player, etc. This bothers some people who prefer a FPS with more of an arcade style. When I started playing MOH, I had just finished the game Return to Castle Wolfenstein which played like the aforementioned arcade tempo. It took some getting use to but once I had the hang of it I enjoyed MOH more than most FPS games I've played. I found the mechanics of the game to be a nice compromise, not as rigid as a game like Rainbow Six, but not as unrealistic or too easy like Unreal Tournament. It's easy to play but difficult to master and the style of play in MOH keeps one person from dominating every online game.

STRATEGY FANS - 2 STARS - MOH is another shoot `em up that probably won't appeal to gamers that like to stick with strategy games. If you haven't played an FPS and are willing to give them a chance, I would recommend MOH as an introduction to the genre.

ADVENTURE/RPG FANS - 3 STARS - Just as I suggested MOH as an introduction to the FPS genre for strategy game fans, I believe MOH would be a fun experience for fans of RPG games. If you enjoy watching WWII movies, you will probably get a kick out of MOH. It's better than most action games but only you know how much tolerance you have for these types of games.

X FACTOR - BATTLE OF THE WWII SHOOTERS - 5 STARS - Recently, the PC gaming community has seen a rush on FPS games with a WWII theme. Return to Castle Wolfenstein and the Day of Defeat mod for Half-Life are only a few. After playing all of them, I have to say MOH was the best WWII experience. It would be fair to say that some of the other WWII FPS multi-player modes are slightly more entertaining but taking everything into account, MOH is the superior product.

BUGS - 4 STARS - I didn't encounter a single crash with the single-player mode in MOH but the multiplayer format crashed a few times. Not a major problem and it will probably decrease as more patches are released. There is a glitch in one of the multiplayer maps that allows anyone who wishes to cheat to move underneath the map thus hiding them from view and allowing them to clean house on the enemy but few know how to do it and it will probably be fixed in a future patch.

REPLAY VALUE - 5 STARS - MOH uses the same Quake engine that several first-person shooters employ. As I write this review, an official editor has been released and it is basically a modified version of the Quake mapping tools. Luckily, many gamers already know how to modify games that use this popular engine so a full-scale MOD community is already in place with not only multi-player maps in progress but many single-player scenarios being worked on. MOH's single-player missions have plenty of replay value as I even played some missions more than twice. One negative aspect of the multi-player mode is that the most exciting maps are objective maps (require your team to complete goals to win the game) and unfortunately there are only four objective maps included in the game. Deathmatch maps in MOH are your typical deathmatch maps, fun every once in awhile but not entertaining enough to keep your attention for long. A great version of deathmatch maps in MOH is the round-based mode which allows only life per player and is fun to watch as your team either wipes out the enemy or is mercilessly crushed. MOH has a very dedicated online community and looks to have a boatload of MODs, maps, skins and other great additions for a long time.

Most Realistic War Game Ever Made

I downloaded and played the single player demo over the weekend and I have to say this demo has the most realistic and tense war settings I have ever played in a computer game. Trust me, I've played them all. I have played Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Ghost Recon, Operation Flashpoint, Sudden Strike, Sudden Strike Forever, etc. and none these even come close to what I have just played on the just released single player demo. Just the background battle sounds (distant gun and artillery fire along with the sound of planes flying overhead) and the music alone is worth downloading the single player demo. Wait till you see the scenery (the burn out vehicles and destroyed 88 guns) and the America and German soldiers in action (not only is each side shooting and throwing grenades at each other, but their is also hand to hand combat where each side trys to use the end of their rifles to head butt each other). This single player demo alone has got the best AI I have ever seen in a computer game. It reminded so much of the movie "Saving Private Ryan". It figures though, this game would turn out to be so good because Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks Studio was involved in the making of this game. I can guarantee you this game is going to get alot of awards and write-ups in the future. Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault is going to be one of the top computer games released for 2002. If I can can go back and keep replaying the single player demo over and over again, that tells you how great Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault is going to be. A good computer game, in my opinion, is one that you can keep playing more than once.[...]. Everyone should add this computer game to their computer game collection. When I played the single player demo, I started to realize that war is hell and their is no glory in fighting or killing. You realize that the American soldiers in World War II justed went in to try to do their jobs to try to end the war so they could go back home. Again, I highly recommend everyone to go out and buy this game.

Own PSX "Medal of Honor"

If the PC port of the game is even half as good as the PSX version, it's going to rock. Medal of Honor (and to a lesser extent, its sequel) is one of the best first person shooters I've ever played. It also happens to be a very good representation of World War II combat. The weapons represented in the game really are what was avaiable during the war (in other words you're not running around with an M-16 wasting everything in sight) The ammunition dispersal is realistic. You take it off dead enemies, steal it from warehouses. The missions are very plausable. You had to take out German weapons productions, stop the Nazi A-bomb, and destroy a V-2 rocket lab. And, unlike most other games, you do have to watch what you shoot! If you nail an oxygen tank, for example, you and anything withing ten feet is done for. I've seen some screen shots for this game. They look absolutely amazing. Then again, that's what gamers can expect from a Quake III engine game.

Exactly how I imagine WWII!

I'm a WWII buff, and spend most of my waking time emmersed in a in a WWII era daydream world. For me, WWII is the center of the universe. I am also an avid gamer and usually like the Rainbow 6 series for its immersive quality. I've just played the demo, and it has taken parts of that WWII fantasy world (American perspective after D-day) and made it as real as possible. Outstanding! Playing it is like living inside a Stephen Ambrose book. MOHAA has just totally blown any of the R6 games out of the running for the most immersive game. The only complaint I would have is the lack of control that the player has over their squad. I'd like to be able to tell them to get back or to get down while I snipe an enemy for example, instead they end up getting killed. At the same time, one develops a sense of responsiblity for their men. You really don't want them to die. Unlike R6 where one could care less. This is all in all the best game I've ever played in my life. Avid gamers may disagree, but WWII buffs shouldn't miss it!

This game is revolutionary.

I'd say that it's difficult for a computer game to truly impress me. I can think of very few games that I have been completely taken aback by. Titles that come to mind are Halflife, Deus Ex, Opposing Force and even No One Lives Forever. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault is perhaps the best game that I have EVER played. If you read my other reviews, you'll know that I would not throw around such a bold statement. MOHAA is simply on another level compared to most other games. Now, I'm not crazy, so I won't say that it is better than Halflife, but I will say that it most certainly gives the alien shooter a run for its money. In my mind, the two games are readily comparable.

MOHAA is a WWII shooter, which one must admit there aren't enough of these days. I won't count Return to Castle Wolfenstein, because that wove in some sci-fi also. Everything that's out is special forces and anti-terrorism. It's about time that a game came out that was pure Nazi-butt whoopin'. The plot remains very true to WWII, and the missions are realistic down to the smallest detail. The entire game has a feeling of nostalgia, as the guns that are available are strictly Axis and Allies' weapons and fire realistically. The realistic effects are accomplished through accurate sound and strength of the weapon. There are two sniper rifles, a silenced pistol, various submachine guns (including the Thompson, my favorite), and many others. Some missions even allow you to call in artillery strikes using a pair of binoculars. As OSS agent Lt. Mike Powell, you'll encounter nothing but Nazis in this game, which I absolutely loved. Each mission is extremely satisfying because of the mission objectives. Many objectives call for blowing up German weaponry, which is extremely gratifying. It is easy to feel like you're actually helping to win the war.

There is also something to be said about the enemy AI and graphics. The game's graphics are superb. Each landscape is crystal clear, and special effects such as shadows, rain, snow, and fog have all been expertly designed. Your enemies are also smart, despite what other reviews have alleged. Enemies kick over tables for cover, yell for help, look startled when you surprise them, hide in closets, and take cover in strategic positions. A particular mission orders you to make your way through a bombed village that is crawling with Nazi snipers. The snipers are deadly and make you pay for your excessively bold moves. Although one shot does not kill in MOHAA, it does not take very many and you must be on the lookout for medics or first-aid kits. You're also not overwhelmed with enemies. Enemy strongholds and artillery positions are realistically defended, giving the game an even better feel. Needless to say, you'll have your work cut out for you.

A note must also be made of the Normandy Invasion, which is level 3. It's on the cover of the box, and any advertisement you'll see for the game ties back into D-Day. The fact is that the designers at EA have truly done an honor to the actual Normandy Invasion. The mission is ultrarealistic, and HARD. I spent the most time on this mission, which makes sense since the real thing was also next to impossible. Buy the game for this mission alone, if for nothing else.

Overall, I must say that MOHAA is the best game that I've played in a while (if not ever!). People have compared the game to Saving Private Ryan, which is fair because the two are similar. However, MOHAA is a legend of its own. If you don't buy this game, you're definitely missing out on gaming history, but also world history. People will remember this game for a long time, I guarantee.

Disagree with Andrew

I'd have to disagree with Andrew from Illinois. After playing the multiplayer demo and single player demo, I'd have to say this game has used the Quake 3 engine well. Return to Castle Wolfenstein has to be the biggest joke when it comes to reality for a World War II game, although I can see it being a fun game for some.
The Medal of Honor demo immerses the player in the environment it creates with its beautiful shadow effects, terrain, ambient sounds, and clever AI. I was most impressed with the game and can't wait for it to come out.
If you play the demo and want some closer to realistic battle damage, play it in hard mode.

The reason I gave the game 4 stars is because I haven't played
the full game, just that one level and the one multiplay map. From that, however, I can tell the game will not disaapoint.

Wow... this game is going to be a milestone. It's going to be legendary. Really, the gameplay is incredible, excellent character movements, reactions and superb AI. Your buddies and the enemy are very cunning. The graphics are beautiful, attention to lighting and textures, animated foliage. There has been talk about being able to take a lot of hits before you die- not so if played on HARD settings. You'll be lucky to round the corner without a bullet in your head. In any case, this game totally, completely beats the pants off that garbage game Op Flashpoint,(whats all the hype?) and Ghost recon. If you like pointy, square, cheesey landscapes and bad renditions of characters, poor voices, realy bad gameplay and a game that eats up all your machines memory and still looks and plays ..., buy Op flashpoint or Ghost Recon. wanna have fun playing a piece of art? Buy Medal of Honor-

I recently purchased this first person shooter expecting more of the same run and gun type of action found in dozens of other games. (I lied. I played the demo to death while waiting for this.) After playing the playstation 2 version, I didnt expect much. When I finally played the PC version I was literally blown away. When I seen the depth of the game I knew I had to buy it. The demo was the most used program on my computer for months. Now the full game is in my posession and I love it. The PC version is actually a completely different game. The missions are different as is the character you play. Obviously the game in general is far better than the console version.
True, the game has no blood or gratuitous amounts of fleshy, dripping, guts, but the game has style. You will learn that other games with gallons of bright red liquid gushing from enemies when you shoot them is rediculous anyway. There are other means of telling when youve scored a hit like sound and slick model animations. Also, the graphics are great. You can hide out in rubble or lush leafy bushes. The sound is the best. You can tell where your enemies are by listening for them (you may need a better sound card to support the enviromental audio, but they arent that pricey). I swear that in multiplayer, I have hunted my friends down by listening to thier boots jogging on the ground. You can always tell where stuff in the game is by litening to it. You may have to creep with some stealth sometimes, but it all adds to the game.
The review stated that the multiplayer is average at best. The reviewer clearly has to be talking about another game. This was a mistake, because in my opinion, MOHAA has the best mutliplayer. It adds the intelectual factor of Ravenshield with a faster paced game. All of the maps are wonderfully thought out. Even the smallest, forgotten nooks and crannies, that seem like developers accidents are purposely put in the level for the advantage of whomever hides in there. There are little spots under rubble or in bushes. There are so many places to hide out and yet there is never a break in the action. The maps can be kind of large, but can be played with few or many people. The game tpyes are fun and have much variety. You will love the sinlge player Omaha beach invasion and you get to recreate that online. The multiplayer is not sub-standard. In fact, it has to be the most fun FPS deathmatch or teambased game ive played. This game is so well done, it make many of the games out today look like garbage. The funny thing is: I dont even like EA Games after being dissapointed with several of their other titles.
Buy this game. If there is anything you will get out of it for sure, it is a sense of appreciation for the most horroble war of all time. You will feel the emotion in this game.
You will feel like you are part of the raw battles of WWII, making adifference. After playing this game you will run out and watch Saving Private Ryan. You may also feel the need to research some history on the war. It makes you feel. Check it out.

Best WWII Game I Ever Played

I have Medal of Honor 1 and 2 for Playstation, The amount of detail is unreal. Things like throwing grenades are made fun for the computer will kick it away or throw it back. If you hit a enemy in the foot or hand they will shake it in pain. Hit top of head and helmet will fly off. Only thing I ever played that came close was Golden Eye for N64. Medal of Honor is more real, more fun. Hook system up to house speakers and shoot a machine gun to shake your house. Shoot a round from your carbine and hear the casing hit the ground. Can't wait for PC version.
