Medal has Mettle

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 2

Ha ha, I made a joke in the title. I am so clever. Ha ha.
Anyway.

Medal of Honor draws root directly from Saving Private Ryan. Literally; Speilburg helped bankroll the series. And Medal of Honor's famous rendition of D-Day, while not as jarring as the films, is still one of the most memorable parts of any game in years. However, there are many imressive scenes.

People hoping for stealthy missions will be sadly dissapointed by Alled Assault. The only times you aren't actually shooting Nazis on sight are when you have a uniform, which means all Nazis think you're one of them. Besides those missions, the game is all run-and-gun. That is one weakness; the second is the over-done "Sniper's Last Stand", where you will be killed constantly by unknown enemies untill you know where the shots are coming from, and a few times after that. Seriously, it is easier to get up Omaha then past the snipers. Fortunatly, that is one level; the sniping only appears a few other times.

And the rest of the single-player is great. There are no jumping puzzles, few times you risk being without ammunition (most of which occuring if you stay in one place on a level that keeps creating enemies. The parts you are placed in a tank and a motor bike are great breaks from the shooting. For these reasons Medal of Honor is the best 2002 shooter I've played, and I don't think playing a second 2002 shooter will diminish my respect for it.

Incredible!

Not a big games player, but took the plunge with this, and I have not been let down. This is incredible! The opening titles remind of Private Ryan, and the first mission is awesome. Gameplay is great, controls easy to work with, AI excellent, and the game in normal mode is tough!
Looking for a first person shooter with great story, brilliant graphics, gameplay superb. Do not buy anything else, this is the only one to go for.
Running on XP home and it seems to take some resources. Make sure you check the recommended specs!

Best FPS out on computers lately

This game is great, despite what other reviews say.Its fun,and its kind of historic, although i dont think your character is the hero of WWII,other than that, the game is great. The battle on Omaha beach is wonderfully made, and the whole game is great, but some parts are extremly difficult and frustrating, although that just adds to the longevity. If you've seen Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers, this is basically an interactive version.I reccomend this game to everyone, but my only gripes are violence(i mean, you need a little blood in a game, but why completly leave it out???),and your friendly AI are very stupid,as they often walk right in front of you, stop in front of you and wont move, and are easily sniped.Buy this game.

BEST GAME EVER

If you have a high speed modem you will be playing this until the end of time. My only complaint would be a lack of multiplayer maps. But other than that this is a fun game.

Excellent Game

Medal Of Honor is without a doubt the best historical military fps game to date. The realism with the weapons and uniforms is unprecedented for a fps style game. Excellent graphics and playability make this game a must own for military game lovers.
I really hope they make a sequel to it.

Great Game except for the politically correct no blood

I hate when companies cave in to whiny left and right wing socialists. But your fellow gamers can come to the rescue. Check the various MOHAA third party sites and you'll find Blood and Guts patches that will add some realism back to the game.

Other then the PC drivel, this is a great game. The allied AI are dumb, but like in any war movie, they are expendable extra's.

The damage models are a little odd. I doubt that a real german shepard can take even one round from a .45 ACP and keep attacking, these dogs must have escaped from one of the labs in Wolfenstein (The Uber-Dog!).

One positive point is that the game is challenging, but no so difficult that you can to fall back on cheats or walk-thrus, except for the really hairy Omaha Beach section.

OK, but just...

This game is OK. I had fun playing it, but I was not really impressed.

I was not impressed with the realism:

-There is no choice of weapons at the beginning of each stage. In the event that you don't like the weapon(s) you have, tough. You cannot drop one and pick up another. On D-Day for instance, you get the Thompson SMG where the Garand rifle would have been more useful. Soliders are getting killed all around, yet there are no dropped weapons to pick up.

-Ammunition that does not interchange in real life interchanges in the game. The MP40 (a 9mm) and the Thompson (a .45ACP) use the same ammunition in the game. The Garand and Springfield (.30-06) and the German Mauser K98 (8x57mm) use the same ammunition in the game. All three pistols, which are all different calibers in real life use the same ammunition. In addition all the fixed point machineguns have unlimited ammo and don't feed from a belt as they should.

-There is a stage where you drive a German King Tiger Tank. You have to fire the main gun at single German soliders and their rifles, submachineguns, and machineguns cause damage to the tank.

-The game was way too short, I was surprised when I finished it so soon

There were some good points to the game, and I enjoyed it, but there are much better games out there.

Review of the SINGLE PLAYER game.

Fun? Hell yes! Realistic? Well, that depends. Taken in the context of being a game, it is very realistic. However, for those of you looking to actually re-live this legendary time, you are of course going to be disappointed. This is a game, not a simulation, and as such, I have to score it very high. Those of you looking for a battle simulation would be better served by "Operation Flashpoint" or even "Project IGI". "Medal of Honor" is strictly a first-person shooter in a WW II setting; I don't think it's pretending to be anything more. And in that context, it's a first-rate FPS. It's immersive, addictive, gorgeous, and sounds great too. I'm playing it on an Athlon 1.2 ghz. system with a 32 MB geForce 2 video card and 256 MB system ram. I experienced some difficulty getting it running at first. It would run, but I'd lose mouse control when actually in the game. What ended up working best for me was to start the game using the game's 'safe mode' (this starts the game in a window on your desktop--you'll still have no mouse control at first, but clicking the mouse outside the window enables it in the game), then switching to high detail once actually inside a game level (this enlarges it to full-screen). This is my personal solution to my own personal problem--your results may vary. I'm running (and recommending) updated geForce 2 reference drivers, and the graphics look stellar at 1024 x 768. I'm about two-thirds of the way through the game. The Normandy level is indeed fantastic, but the levels immediately following it are even better. Actually, there is some phenomenal level design throughout the entire game. And having played "Return to Wolfenstein" through to completion, I can confidently say the entire game design of MoH is superior. Don't get me wrong. I really liked RtCW, but it pales a bit compared to MoH. Both games suffer from linearity, but Wolfenstein's linearity is worse. MoH is linear, but it usually doesn't feel that way, and sometimes the levels are so huge, the linearity is almost non-existant. A classic FPS. Highly recommended.

Killin' Nazis are always fun!!!

Yes that's a silly ttile but I have a serious issue with games based on actual wars. Real people died in these wars and making "video games" of them is somewhat disrespectful in my opinion.

That being said, I bought this game used and cheap and wanted to see what the big deal was.

It is a great game.

The level designs look authentic and aren't exaggerated or simplified for the sake of the "action". The scenarios are gritty and war-torn giving the environments credibility. The AI enemies aren't stupid: They duck and dodge and sometimes draw and fire faster than I did. Oddly enough, they all look the same, but hey, they are all Nazis anyway.

The weapons are great and function quite realistically sans the recoil and jamming. An excellent selection of vehicles including jeeps and tanks and then there's the artillery with firing turrets all over the place.

There are a few issues I had though. I found that some levels did get repetitive and there were far too many enemies at times all with the accuracy of Legolas. The auto-saving was another problem but one that can be easily tolerated.

Overall, it's an exciting adventure regardless of the WWII themed action. The Omaha Beach level really was one of the most disturbing levels of gameplay I have ever encountered considering what really happened there.

Play for fun but keep in mind respectfully and with admiration for those that truly fought and died in a horrible war.
