Truly a classic amongst classics, this is hands down one of the best and most fun fighting games I have ever played. Every Marvel character and every major Capcom character is a selectable character for you to use as a fighter in 3 on 3 battles. Super moves and air combos add to the excitement as you can make your dream team of fighters.
Imagine Megaman, Dan and Juggernaut all fighting together on the same team and the only reward is knowing that you beat up the rest of the competition. Well imagine no more.. this game will give you every combination of fighters you could ever want and it even has some never before seen characters in the Vs. series. Like a cactus character named Amingo, Cable and Marrow from the XMen and Anikarus from the Darkstalkers series.
This game is pretty much the last in the line of the Marvel fighting series (mostly due to Capcom losing the rights to the Marvel franchise) which started with Xmen Children of the Adom and then the next games would include Street Fighter characters then just all Marvel Characters and then the also great Marvel Vs Capcom 1. This takes every single character we saw in every previous game up to this point and has them almost unchanged. Characters like Iceman and Spiral which were only in Xmen return almost unchanged and just as much fun as we remember. Bosses like Thanos and Dr. Doom from previous games, are now selectable for you to use as part of your teams as well. (of course they are weakend a tad but thats only expected)
The only downsides I would have to mention are that compared to the Dreamcast version, the PS2 version is a bit pixalated. Its not as smooth and well drawn as the other version was and there is a bit of load time in between the matches that you didn't find on the Dreamcast. Besides that though, the game is totaly unchanged and a perfect adapatation in everyway. The other minus is that there is really no plot at all to this game. M vs C 1 had an ending for every character giving you something accomplished. No matter who you win this game with its the same ending which is basicaly a "You did it. Congratualtions" now you can watch the credits type of ending. The most obvious reason for no endings are that there are over 50 characters and theres no way to put an ending for all of them especialy when you are using teams of 3. But it is missed when you are just fighting just for the sake to fight. Also Rogue has been changed. Instead of copying a power of the character she drains, she now just gets a general strength, defense, armor or speed boost depending on the character she drained. again its understandable due to the amount of characters in the game and how hard it would be to have her be able to have all of them. Ken also is the weaker version of the character where the fireball only goes half across the screen before dying but hes still just as good if you know how to use Ken. (Flamming uppercuts and all)
You won't be sorry adding this game to your collection. Whether you play it one player against the computer or against a friend it has so many combination of characters you can use, you probably will never truly have every team possible. Mastering each character is half the fun and learning all the combos and what assists work best is another part of the game that adds to its long playing value.
Capcom really did a great job here and I hope to see more games like this from Capcom in the future as this is the mark of excellence that all team based fighting games should have to live up to.
Perhaps The Best

The characters of Marvel and Capcom collide into an all out three on three battle. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is better than the first one hands down. If anyone tells you different label their brain isn't working. I've heard people say this game was too easy well, that's why you can adjust the difficulty level, hmmm that took some brain power. But anyways all of the fighters have moves which compliment them and seem fitting for that fighter. The moves and background are especially stunning plus the triple special combos are a real killer. The music could use a little work though, someone singing about holding someone else tight doesn't seem to fit at all. But besides that this is an awesome game and the music can be fix with volume control a stereo and a c.d. of your choosing. People who aren't fans of fighting games I believe will enjoy this one too, it's just that fun, plus it's always a thrill to see your favorite characters. Fans of fighting games should be warned, you just might pee in your pants.
2D Cult-Classic Beat'em up - PURE GAMEPLAY!

Before I start, I would like to commend Capcom for this conversion. It was a LONG time coming, but they still persisted and went ahead with it. This game, while not appealing to a wider market, will no doubt please a lot of die-hard fans of the genre. Please read on and find out what my opinion is, of this cult-classic 2D fighting game.
GRAPHICS 7.5/10
This is where the game takes a step back in time. The 2D sprites are showing their age, and look particularly pixilated in comparison to the Dreamcast port. But what is reassuring is that all characters move smoothly and have all most, if not all of their animation frames intact. When you think about how jerky a lot of the old 2D fighting games were on PS1 back in the day due to lack of frames, it's a relief to know the PS2 can `cut it' in this area. Most of the character sprites are bold and colorful as ever, but some appear rough around the edges and recycled when compared to some of the previous installments. The game's special effects are rather impressive: when performing a tag super combo, the explosive effects are very flashy. The Backgrounds are now in 3D, but still have a cartoony edge, this is nice, but the characters being 2D, don't fit in very well - I cant help thinking the game would have had a better feel if it was 2D throughout.
So in summary, the graphics aren't too bad, it's just a pity that the character sprites suffer from pixilation and that they are not quite on par with the crystal clear sprites of the Dreamcast version.
SOUND 5.5/10
Now this is the area of the game that I find most disappointing. The sound effects during battle sound shoddy, recycled, muffled, and altogether a lot less crisp and clear when compared with the Dreamcast version. Sometimes you can barely hear the impact of a blow. The vs. games on the PS1 packed a real good punch and sounded solid - so why in the world does this PS2 suffer and have worse sound? The PS2 has greater audio capabilities than the PS1 but for some reason suffers in this area. Perhaps it is due to the large amount of memory usage for all of the animation frames processed at any one time during play. It just takes a lot away from the solidity and impact of the game and slightly effects gameplay quality. It is as if all of the sounds have been dubbed over from the Dreamcast version and have lost audio quality in the process. The Music on the other hand, is what prevents me from giving Marvel vs. Capcom 2 a completely bad score on the sound front. The music is excellent. It gives the game a good feel and is very fitting for super heroes. However the character select music can become extremely tedious, especially when taking longer to choose your characters as the roster increases. The continuous repetition of the "I wanna take you for a ride" riff is sometimes enough to reduce you to tears of tedium and anxiety! Just joking, but then you'd probably guessed! The music is extremely Jazz influenced, so depending on your taste; you may either love it or hate it.
GAMEPLAY 10/10
Now this is where the game cannot be faulted! The usual razor sharp control system is once again present with the exception of one minor alteration: the traditional six button configuration has been brought down to four, but don't panic! This increases combo ease and speeds the gamelpay up. The difference is that you now have light & medium punch as one button, and light & medium kick also as one button. Upon activation of the button your character will perform a light attack but when pressed repeatedly your character will go from light to medium performing easy chain combos and super combo openers! (Opportunities to link regular chain combos to super combos) And of course you have your heavy attack buttons for kick & punch. This control system works incredibly well and makes gameplay a delight!
But what makes Marvel vs. Capcom 2 astounding is the sheer amount of characters available. There are 24 to begin with and a total of 56 when all are opened. This makes for an incredible amount of gameplay possibilities and character teams, especially now that you have three characters to a team! Difficulty levels are good, ranging from very easy, where you can cheaply super combo your way through the game, to intense difficulty, where you will struggle for victory in the first battle! All in all, an amazing amount of FUN gameplay.
LIFESPAN/LONGEVITY 9/10
This game has a massive amount of replay value; you'll keep coming back for more. It has 7 additional backgrounds to open up; character galleries and all characters have variant costume colors to access along with the aforementioned multitude of playable characters. All of which are bought with points earned through playing the game in training, arcade and score attack mode. You have an incentive upon playing the game due to how much more you can gain through buying new features with the points you earn. Excellent.
OVERALL OPINION
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is a great bumper value package of a fighting game! But in the end of the day, it will only really appeal to the die-hard fans. The majority of the fighting fans these days would opt for the next generation fighters like Tekken 4, Virtua Fighter 4 or the upcoming Soul Blade 2, but if you are a fan, I strongly recommend this game. The good easily out ways the bad.
To be exact, an overall 8/10 - Great Stuff
Great, but too late.

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 was one of the best arcade games ever ranking right up there with Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Combat (O.k. so MK may not be considered that much of a classic by some, but when it came out the lines to play the game ran out of the arcade and into the parking lot.) This game was great on Dream Cast and will still be fun on PS2. And I will buy it the first day that it is available. So why only 3 stars you ask? Because it took so long to get here. I'm not satisfied with a port of a game that come out in 2000 (I think that's right) when it's nearly 2003. I want Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. But if you look back at how many versions of Street Fighter 2 Capcom released before finally learning to count to 3, that could take a while. Still this game is great fun and extremely addictive. It's also one of those games that's fun for novice's and skilled veterans alike. It's proof that 2-D games, when done right, can be just as good, if not better, than their 3-D counterparts. The graphics may fall short, but it's gameplay that truly matters in a fighter. If you are a Capcom or SNK fan, then I don't need to tell you to buy it. If you a fan of fighting games in general then I highly recomend buying it. For every one else, I suggest you rent it and then decide.
BUYERS BEWARE DO NOT ORDER FROM DVDS123,they rewrap used rare games and gouge the price with fake seal!

If you do order this game avoid DVDs123 as they charge the lowest price for new and sealed but send you a game with a fake seal and a big generic white security strip, not the true hologram foil security strip found on new PS 2 games. You can get it used much cheaper from an honest seller who lets you know up fron its used.I was one of DVDs123's many victims of falling for the new and sealed advertisement only to recevie a used game that was massively price gouged. When you complain they use the excuse that if they are out of new copies they send you used ones in good condition (mind you they don't drop the price) If you buy from them you are getting a USED copy for 300 bucks not new.If your going to do taht you might as well get it from an honest used seller for about $200 less.
Was it a great fighting game for its time, sure it was.Is it still a great fighting game after all these years.Sure just like the Street Fighter line of games still holds up well after all these years. The thing is though its good as a classic, theres been far superior fighting games that have come out since. If it was a game for 19.99 like most retro games release for I would say sure for that price go ahead and pick it up.But as for the prices these gougers are charging, definitely not worth it.Its becoming a trend on amazon for merchants to hold rare games and jack the price up praying for suckers to bite.Funny thing is alot of these games will probably come out on the PS3 in the future on compilation and classic discs dirst cheap and someone who pays $500 for it new here will be kicking themselves then.I can't believe theres a guy trying to sell it for 500 just cause its factory sealed and new.You can probably find the arcade machine it was ported over from for cheaper then that price for crying out loud. You have to have no shame at all to even try to sell any PS 2 game for that price I don't care how rare it is.I have a collection of over 300 games, many still factory sealed cause i haven't gotten a chance to play them yet and some of them i see going for 200 or more cause they are rare to find factory sealed.I would never take advatage of people like that.As far as Marvel V.S. Capcom goes, its fun for awhile but like every other game after a month its a dust collector.I hope no person is stupid enough to be suckered into that 500 dollar price tag for the new one.Even 70 something for a used one is absurd.Go buy yourself Tekken 5,Virtua Fighter Evolution,or if you want nostalgia go with the Street Fighter Anthology that came out.Theres many fighting games out there that are better then this for alot less money.Great buy at 19.99,but as an owner of the game i can say if it breaks tommorow i wouldn't even shell out another 19.99 to replace it if i could find it that low.Its just not worth much more then a trip down memory lane for a month and then you come back to the far superior games put out today and forget about this disc as it sits useless like a paperweight on your shelf.
Finally!!! MvC2 has come back....

It is about time Capcom released this title for the PS2; I had originally bought the system for Final Fantasy X, as well as the possibility of Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Why they made us wait so long I guess we'll never know.
With the introduction of the 3-character tag system, new moves and combos, and the extensive list of selectable characters (including Dr. Doom!), how can you go wrong? The 3D backgrounds also add new style to the game. My only complaint would be that the final boss is a tad easy (and not nearly as cool as Onslaught or Apocalypse); with most characters you can kill its final form with one team super as long as all 3 on your team are intact. The top characters in this version appear to be Cable, Magneto, and Iceman, while cheaper characters include Spiral, Omega Red and Blackheart. Although this game does require a degree of skill, particularly when performing air combos linked with hyper combos, button-mashers seem to fare pretty well, so one need not be an expert to thoroughly enjoy the game. A must-have for fighting-game lovers and those who have followed previous titles in the series...
....alright, so I just bought the game last night, and let's just say I got little sleep thereafter. You only start out with a fraction of the 56 characters, and must unlock the others by spending points earned by completing other modes of the game. The controls are a bit difficult to get used to at first (unless you have an arcade-style controller) but soon enough I was busting out Cable's infinite-Hyper combo like no tomorrow. Pick this one up, it was well worth the wait and a very faithful arcade-to-home system translation.
An extremely fun fighter!!

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 is not a new game by any means, as it has been around for the Dreamcast for a couple of years now. For those of us that did not buy a Dreamcast (R.I.P.), we can now rejoice that we have our very own version of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2.
This game may not be as pretty as some of the newer 3D fighters, but it one of the most addictive, and fun fighting games you will ever play!!!
You have a very large assortment of charaters from the Marvel Universe (Hulk, Captain America, Spiderman, Wolverine, Cable etc), and a bunch from Capcom's (Strider, Mega Man, Guile etc.) and a large number of characters to unlock. The battles are huge, the power ups are amazing, and once you start playing the hours will fall off the clock.
I recommend the game to any fans of the Capcom Street Fighter games, or any Comic Book fans out there. This game is a blast!!!
One MAJOR mistake ruins this game before you can even play..

This game is HIGHLY flawed. There's a HUGE misktake with the game: this game is on the blue-bottom disc format (CD-Rom).
If you are unsure what that means, let me explain. Playstation 2 games are on two different formats: DVD-rom, and CD-rom. On a CD-rom, the bottom of the disc is blue, and the CD is lighter than a DVD format.
When ANY Playstation 2 game is on CD-rom format, the PS2 WILL have problems reading the disc. This is because the disc is lighter than its DVD counterpart, causing the disc to wobble when spinning in the PS2. This causes loading problems, game failing to start, and often, damage to your system. You read about this problem A LOT in game magazines.
It's unfortunate Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 is on the CD-rom format. The gameplay is great actually. However, 75% of the time when you turn on the game, it won't start, guaranteed. It says "Disc read error." Unless you want to restart your PS2 four or five times just to start the game, this game isn't worth the money.
I know what some people would say: there is a solution to this. There is a solution actually, but it's risky. One solution to make the CD-rom disc heavier (for PS2 to read it properly) is to put two equal pieces of tape side by side next to the center hole. There's a risk to this, though. What if the tape is too light? That means error on PS2. What if the tape is too heavy? That means an error also. Besides, who wants to put some tape on their games? It's not worth it!
Look in the lower-left hand corner of the game's cover (the picture on Amazon.com). There's a tiny "DVD-rom" logo. Unfortunately, this is misleading. The game is NOT on DVD-rom format. I don't understand why there's false packaging labels.
I know all this because I ordered the game off Amazon.com (brand new). When the game arrived, I put the game in my system. Guess what? The PS2 wouldn't read the disc! My PS2 is fine--all other games work properly. I had to restart my system around five times to get the disc working.
If you must buy this game, but it on Dreamcast, or Xbox. Please, stay away from the Playstation 2 version, unless you are tolerant of restarting your PS2 four or five times just to get the game started. Be warned.

Its one of the greatest fighters ever, yes. Its not worth $90. For that, you could buy Tekken 5, Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution, Soul Calibur 3, and a nice dinner. If you're rich, then yeah, this game is great. But we're not all rich.

I love this game and I have been trying to find a copy for months now, but when one finally shows up, the price is outrageous! And we're talking used here! Can someone tell me how this game went from near obscurity to the most incredible demand?!
