The Last Great 2D Fighting Game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 4
Date: September 08, 2003
Author: Amazon User

This game is by far the best 2D fighting game ever created. With more characters than any game out there and the fact that you make a team of 3 fighters, the combinations are endless. The combos are not very hard to pull off, and the control system is easy to learn and extremely effective. Incredible super moves, and solid gameplay make this game extremely enjoyable. There are 2 things however, that I don't like about this game... the 1st is the repetitive background music, however, look back at great games like Zelda and Super Mario Brothers.... Theey had the same thing, so maybe it's ok. the 2nd thing I don't like is the fact that the ending of the game is the same for every character. I suppose to make 56 endings would have taken away from the game a bit though. All in all this is one of my favorite games of all time. Nothing beats having a tournament with your buddies with some killer 3 on 3 action that this game has to offer. If you like 2D fighters, you will NOT be dissapointed with this game!

The ultimate fighting game - period

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 - New Age Of Heroes (2000.) The fourth game in the "Marvel characters versus Capcom characters" series.

Over the years, there have been a ton of fighting games, but as the years progressed, it became evident that one company was the supreme mastermind of the genre - Capcom. When they released Street Fighter II in 1991, it revolutionized fighting games and was frequently ripped off. Capcom used the excellent mechanics behind that ever-so-successful series to launch spin-offs like Street Fighter Alpha, as well as other fighting series, including Darkstalkers. The corporation even made a fighting game featuring Marvel comics characters which was well-received. And then, Capcom did one of the smartest things of their entire career - put Marvel and Capcom characters together in the same fighting game! This started with the classic X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, which was followed up my Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter, which greatly expanded the Marvel roster. And then came Marvel Vs. Capcom, which greatly expanded the number of Capcom characters available. The fourth game in this Marvel and Capcom series, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 - New Age Of Heroes, arrived in 2000. Read on for my review (and sorry about the long introduction.)

We'll start off with what this game does good. The absolute best part of this game is the sheer magnitude of characters you can play as. Once they're all unlocked, you'll have over fifty characters! And you've got the all-stars from both universes. Capcom serves up classic Street Fighter characters like Ryu and Ken, along with Darkstalkers favorites Felicia and Morrigan, and even Mega Man! Capcom's got a ton of their most popular characters too, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and pretty much all of the X-Men. The game even features new characters from both franchises. Unlike the first Marvel Vs. Capcom, which played pretty crappy with console controllers, this time around the scheme was done AROUND the controller, so it plays WAY better than its predecessor. The 128-bit backgrounds look GREAT. The soundtrack's catchy, too, even if some beg to differ. The system used for unlocking characters/stages/outfits/etc. is also well-done. You earn points every time you play, and these can be used to buy the bonus features. For the most part, the game takes everything from the original Marvel Vs. Capcom, and improves it. There is very little wrong with this game. If you liked the original, you're probably going to like this one even more.

As much as I like this game, I do have a few complaints. The one that seems to get the most attention is the characters being drawn at a low resolution. Why did Capcom do this? The backgrounds are simply stunning, so I really think a little more work could have gone into the character models. Likewise, too many characters have been altered too much - Chun Li, Sakura, and M. Bison have been altered so much that they aren't even fun to play as. Likewise, many of the characters are just weak when compared to others - Roll is just pathetic and essentially comes off seeming like a "poor man's version of Mega Man." The new characters were unnecessary. Though cool, their omission would have allowed for other great Marvel and Capcom characters to be in the game - I'm sure plenty of other gamers would have liked to have been able to play as Daredevil, Dr. Octopus, The Punisher, Bass, and Proto Man. My biggest complaint is that the game is no longer in production - they don't make Dreamcasts anymore, and for reasons only god knows, the Playstation 2 and XBOX versions were produced in limited quantities. Still, these flaws can ultimately be neglected. For everything this game does wrong, there are about ten things it does right.

My final verdict is simple. If you like Capcom's fighting games, this is a must-buy. It's my favorite fighting game of all time, and you'd be a fool not to buy it if you're into the genre. Capcom knows good fighting games, and this is as good as they come. It's tough to find due to the poor distribution, but trust me - it's worth hunting down.

A Pretty good game

I bought this game a week ago and find it very fun to play with. I used to have a PSX and N64 and there were no chance for me to play these kind of fighting game where you can switch characters during the fights.( And Saturn and Dreamcast was not worth getting just for fighting games.) And now, despite that the game has came out for DC for 2 yrs, the game is must get for a PS2 fan. In respond to a previous reviewer, the game DOES NOT have any slowdowns or worse music; althrough its higher resolution over DC version made the character look blockier a little bit more.

Great Game!

This game is great. It far surpasses any game like it including Marvel VS Capcom. The are 56 PLAYABLE characters and with three on three action this game is the best. In my opinion the best team is Iron Man, Strider Hiryu and anyone else (I usually pick Cable). The only fault with this game may be its replay value, because once you get all the stages, character images, outfits, etc when you put down the game you probably won't pick it up again in the near or distant future.

The only fighting game you'll ever need.

Everytime I go to my friends' house, we play MvC2. It's become part of our lives... part of our genetic makeup... part of our being. We have become one with the MvC2.

This is quite possibly the best (and easiest) fighting game out there. I mean, that tells you something if the damn game is worth well over 70 bucks, right? Luckily, my friends and I were lucky enough to snag this game before it became a rarity. Will we ever sell it? NOPE.

Well... maybe for a million bucks.

Are these sellers on crack?

You have got to be kidding, $500.00 for a video game? I have heard of price gouging but this is ridiculous, this is a fun game but to not be able to find it for under $75.00 is unheard of and that's for a used one with scratches on it.How are kids supposed to be able to afford something like this, heck I cant afford it! It's really too bad this happens so often and since most of these wont sell (hopefully) then what are these sellers going to do? Hang on to them a few more years so they can say they are older and super collectibles and sell them for $600.00. I dont understand a video game becoming a collectors item, you buy it to play it and once you have played and beaten the game it collects dust, that's a collectors item? To who? I hope these sellers get stuck with their overpriced games until they realize if you want to sell them you will have to offer them at reasonable prices. Lets hope all buyers think this way and then we can all afford to buy fun games at real prices.

Decent fighting game, but not worth the money.

As others have mentioned in their reviews, there seems to have been a sudden jump in pricing for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 due to limited production, so finding a copy for less than $50 is quite challenging.
It's a decent fighting game. Considering it's a 3-4 year old Dreamcast port of an arcade game, the graphics are quite unattractive. There are a lot of characters and the tag feature and all the insanity you've come to expect from this series is here. There are a lot of bugs in the game. For example, prices fluctuate at the character store so that in one click a character might cost 2000 and later might cost 600. Overall, the game is a shameless port, and it's clear that Capcom did absolutely nothing to improve it for the PS2.
At $20 as a greatest hit, it might have been recommendable simply because there is some fun to be had with all the characters and combinations. But considering that every seller is willing to gouge the price and rip people off, don't even bother. There are better fighters out there like Soul Calibur III or Tekken 5. If you hate 3D fighters, there are several 2D fighters for the PS2 that are excellent and cheaply priced to boot such as the Guilty Gear series or Capcom vs. SNK 2. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is simply too outdated and too expensive for your money.

People please have some sense

I used to have this game and I would like to have it again, but the prices these leeches is asking for is insane. I never sold it, I got drunk and spilled beer on it. I would buy it again but this game is not worth more than 20 bucks. And the hell with what some creeps beneath me say. It is not the greatest fighting game ever. That spot is reserved for either the soul calibur or tekken series, Samurai Showdown 2, MK 2, Killer Instinct 2 or Dead or Alive. My advice to you is, do what I been doing. Pick up one of the games I just mentioned(some you aint gonna find, I'm just makin a point) or the capcom collections. Even better just wait awhile. This just may soon be apart of some capcom collection in the future together with darkstalkers and X-men children of the atom. Dont be suckered by these lames. 85 bucks for a game with scratches and a beat up cover? Man please! Now on to the review...
To those who never played this game ever and are looking for a review that is not bashing the prices, I'll give it to you. Marvel vs. capcom 2 takes the most powerful and well known characters from the marvel, streetfighter, star gladiator, resident evil, darkstalkers universe and puts them in a 3 on 3 battle, which you can swap out characters in the heat of battle at anytime. There's at least 30 characters. The game includes regular and air combos and team finishing move combos. The control system is no longer set up the way as the first one, or better put, the basic streetfighter 6 button control scheme. The weaker buttons are combimed as one. ex. jab/strong, short/forward. This is a lot better for the simple fact combos are done a lot easier. The controls are very responsive and fluid. The graphics are great, and the fun factor is very high as long as your not playing alone, such as the fate you suffer when playing all fighting games you master. The downside to the game in my opinion is the music. It has the worst fighting music in a game I ever played and it's a huge step down from the first Marvel vs. Capcom. In the first one the music was character specific, this one the music is just there and its out of place.
Well thats the review on this game. If it was being sold for anything less then 20bucks I would recommend this right away. These prices are insane. But lately capcom has given me faith to believe that this going to be part of one of there compilations in the future. I say just wait for that.

Good...but inferior to the Dreamcast version

Let me say this right off the bat: The Dreamcast version, which is 2 YEARS OLD, is better. The game just doesn't handle as well. The PS2 Controller feels too small and the controls aren't as responsive as it should be. You'll find yourself trying to do a simple super jump, and not being able to preform it half the time. And don't even bother trying to use the Thumbstick to play. It's a royal pain in the rear...

Don't get me wrong. This is a great game, and if you're a fan of 2D fighters, it's a definate MUST. But if you have a choice, try to get the now-hard-to-find DC version as opposed to this one. The graphics are the same on both systems, as is the love-it-or-hate-it soundtrack (Which I love by the way) but you'll enjoy the DC one much more because you won't find yourself losing fights because the controls aren't as responsive as they should be...

A Great Game

When I first played this game on the now Defunct Dreamcast, i was amazed. 56 charactors, 3 at a time, non-stop brawl. the only thing that i didn't like was every once and a while I wanted to Fight a 1 on 1 battle. Now that is just from years of playing other fighters, coming back. The animation, in this game was superb, the sound was a little off at times, but all in all this was a great game. Since Dreamcast, is no longer being supported, I had to move on to the new systems, PS2 GC, and Xbox. I have been waiting patiently for some of those great games from Dreamcast to make there way to the newer systems, such as Soul Calibur, and this, seems to be the first that I have seen heard, this is a great buy, especially if you have ever been into the Street Fighter series, all you favorites, are there. This game is by far the best Capcom fighter. Of all you favorites from Capcom, and Marvel, Don't Pass this one up.
