Man o man, was this game fun. And by fun, I mean "lost weekend" fun. Exciting, violent, fast-paced. Great storyline ( If that kinda thing matters to you). Beautiful graphics, great characters and voice-acting.Challenging without being frustrating. I daresay this is my favorite game on any platform. Zillions of glowing reviews can't be wrong, Bub. Grab this one, call in sick and unplug the phone.

Widescreen compatibility, orchestral music, fantastic storyline, incredible action, unbelievable graphics, and addictive play make this a game so good that it simply transcends the boundaries of its genre. This game proves that video games can indeed be forms of high art.

Everything I expected and More

I, like many, followed the reviews and praise for god of war with rapt attention. I only heard of this game a few months ago but everything I saw of it made me want to play it. And now I have. I must say it lives up to and exceeds my expectations. Each level, each area, each moment is flawless. People criticize the game for being short but the fact is that it is the best 10-15 hours you will have with any game instead of just 10 good hours with 10 more worthless ones thrown in. The story is good enough to be a greek myth by itself and will always keep you guessing. The gameplay and fighting is really spectacular. Each action is fluid and realistic and when you pull off a truly devastating combo there is no doubt of the damage it has caused. The contact sensitive moves such as poking at a cyclops' eye or ramming the hydra's head on a mast are very cool and really add to the fun of the game. Each enemy type has it's own and doing them all is very interesting.

Gore and Violence, yes it is here but it is not unlikeble. Basically if you do not like blood don't play the game. This game is based off greek myths so violence and sex are a mainstay just like all myths. People seem to think the game is overdoing the violence but is actually just keeping up with the subject matter. Cronos, the mighty titan of old, ate his own children and then they killed him from inside and were the 9 gods in one myth for instance. This is much worse than stabble a minitaur. The most blood is in the movies but these are very surreal as they are kratos's memory and as long as you do not mind blood they will not take away from the game.

Replay and Extras: People complain of the lack of new levels and other things. I disagree. For one after beating the game a challenge of the gods is unlocked which is a very hard skill based activity. This adds around 2 hours. Not only that but there are over 10 making of videos and other features that both talk about making the game and about the possible next adventures aka sequels, of Kratos. Finally, god mode is unlocked. This is an extremely difficult setting for the game which means after around 5 hits you are dead as opposed to the 20+ of the normal setting. It is a realy challenge that I have not yet completed and also gives you even more extras when conquered. So the replayability is not bad at all.

Overall this game is fantastic. It's areas and situations are creative and mind blowing and you will not regret owning this title. Enjoy.

Yes, it is a lot like Rygar: The Legendary Hero

As one of the first reviewers mentioned, a lot of the ideas from this game were borrowed (stolen) from another game named Rygar.

In Both games, you fight against Greek creatures such as a Minator, a Centaur, and a giant Sea Monster.
In Both games, you are able to use kill points to upgrade your weapon.
In Both games, there is a stage where you are stuck in the underworld (Hell) and you have to find a way out, while trying not to fall into the lava pits.
The weapons for the games are practically the same, with a swingable chain attached to your arm.

I had bought God of War first. And was later surprised at the similarities when I then purchased and played Rygar.

So if you have ended GOW and you're now yearning for more action, then Rygar is a good game to get. Out of the two of them, GOW is my favorite, but Rygar does have much better magic attacks.

BEST!

God of War is easily THE best action adventure game to be released on the PS2. I'm telling you, this game will not disappoint. Blood, over-the-top action, puzzles, and a great story. - One of the few games I've played where the software team and the writers have managed to produce a story that is worth unfolding. Most of the time in action games like this, the story seems to be an afterthought. Just something to slap together with the game's main focus of fighting and killing. - Not the case with God of war. GREAT story and great voice acting.

STORY: You're Kratos... ancient Spartan warrior wronged by Ares, the God of War. You begin a quest to recover Pandora's box, a device that can be used to murder Ares. Other gods help you along the way and the story of Kratos' past slowly unfolds. Good stuff.

GAMEPLAY: Lots of good, and lots of aggravating here.. but no bad whatsoever. The good crosses over into great from time to time; this is an extremely FUN game. Kratos has two sets of melee weapons along with additional 'god' powers (medusa's gaze, zeus' lightning bolt etc) that he acquires throughout his quest. You'll have lots of fun hosing down amazingly detailed enemies for hours. There are combo moves and manna fueled magic attacks going on here and its all fun stuff. You end up needing them both and it all feels very well balanced.
- I mentioned aggravating. This is due to the fact that between sharper AI in multiple foes and some flat out ridiculously obnoxious level designs, you will get a little annoyed by this game from time to time. Some parts just baffled me.. not in that they were too difficult to figure out.. but in the fact that I couldn't figure out why the game's designers put retarded parts as such in the game to begin with. - Almost as if they thought we might have too much fun so they should throw in some B*ll $hitt annoyances just to get under our skin. It's nothing too detrimental though. Nothing that takes away from the game's overall enjoyment too too much.

_ Being a fan of the Greek mythos, I found this game to be particularly enjoyable as the subject matter has been brought to life beautifully. This game already has some sequels lined up, and personally I can't wait. This game is an amazing experience that you need to get in on. Buy it.

PERFECTION !!!! ..... wait...wait a minute {sighs} not quite

This game was great from the moment I opened it, all the way till the end. Everything positive you hear is indeed true. Great graphics, battle system ect. The only promblem with the game is that it has no replay value. When you beat it you unlock a ton of cool things, like the making of the game, but nothing to enhance the game experience. No new weapons, skills, and you don't keep any of what you had in your previous game. You can unlock new costumes but thats it.

All and all its GREAT your first time through. Then I'd suggest letting your friends borrow it or trading it back in. Because the dungeons are fresh in your head, and you'll know exactly what to do if you play it again anytime soon.

God of War is a great game! But not for younger players. The bad things you do are have sex, there is lots of blood, lot of bad language. This is a great game for older players though. You could do excellent combos such as grab an enemy and rip them straight in half!
You get awsome weapons too! You get two long chains that are melted into Kratos' arms. At the end of the chains there are blades. These are called the Blades of Chaos. These blades are fast and cause a lot of damage, that is if you upgrade the swords to max.

Great Game!!! God of War

God of War is a magnificent game, it has great graphics and gameplay and its quite tricky at some places. Its really fun and its fair and even and It takes no time at all to learn the controls. Although i must warn you there is a little bit of nudity in the game. but everything else i think is totally fine except for the blood. I give this game a 5 out of 4 because, its really fun, but theres some a couple of puzzles that are easy to get by, but im not much a puzzle person. Also you can get lost easily if you go off trail. But its fairly easy to get back on. I highly reccomend this game because its extreamly fun and its being sold for a great price.

More than a Game.

This one of the few games I have played that manage to merge story, gameplay and visual screen play into something that can give modern action films a good thumping sure its violent and one of the first games to openly have nudity(nipples) via greek theme in all this game dose well what most movies try to do well worth having in your collection.

The game is not perfect and has some weak spots but as a whole its truly a great game thats a real experience.

BTW M rated games are not for kids..the days of video games=kids is long past....
