Awful camera, repetitive controls...what else is new?

The concept had seemed interesting ever since the first Dynasty Warriors game hit the shelves, but it wasn't until now that I tried actually playing this game.
As with all other one-against-many fighting games -- like Final Fight or the granddaddy of them all, Double Dragon -- the computer basically keeps trying to get at you from the back to disrupt your moves. That's fair game and to be expected. What I hadn't expected was that you would have a game camera that steadfastly refuses to look where you want it to. Sixty per cent of the time, I'm swinging at enemies behind me when I can't even see them, because the camera idiotically stays in its own angle, so that when you're battling a particularly powerful enemy, he could all of a sudden land someplace you can't see and you'd have to run around begging for the camera to go back to a 3rd-person perspective behind you so you know where you're going. Also, the 360-degree pan when you execute a super move only serves to disorient your controls. Maybe these camera problems serve to fulfill the game designers' feeble fantasies of being filmmakers, but in a game, it's just irritating. The fighting "system" is pathetic -- lots of button mashing in all directions. Most of your combos are useless because you're receiving attack from all sides, so you end up using one combination over and over because anything else would be suicide. So I played through the entire "Shu" story by doing one combo. Yeah, I'm passing levels, but it's monotonous as hell.
As the Amazon editorial review noted, there's also a lot of running around in this game. The programmers love designing level maps chock full of dead ends, forcing you to run all the way around to get where you want. Even on horseback, it takes friggin' forever. And then there's the game's charming tendency to magically make three powerful enemy platoons appear right beside your commander whom you're supposed to protect...if you happen to be launching an attack against the enemy base at that time and can't find a horse, good luck. Oh yeah, and the enemy can do the ol' "block you to death". I had Cao Cao cornered with only 5 per cent of his health left, and all he did was put his back to the mountain, hold down block against all my eight bodyguards and myself, and waited for five minutes straight until troops from his side appeared right beside my commander and took him out in a flash. This was 95 per cent through the level. Call this fun?
I've been able to advance very well through this game, but it's really not a good gaming experience. And I'm willing to bet Dynasty Warriors 5 is just on the horizon...with the exact game mechanics. Koei has made it a habit of releasing the same game over and over without making any real improvements on sequels, so I seriously doubt I will ever play another Dynasty Warriors game again.

You've read two types of reviews. One is correct, the other is wrong. When you first start this game it is the best game you've ever played. After you start to play it you realize the flaws, mindless warrior bashing, no strategy, and [...] poor ai with potentially great game design. First off, I've played dynasty warriors 2 and own dynasty warriors 3. The newest installment does nothing but upgrade graphics and sound, give you more levels and different item/weapon/bodyguard physics. At the same time the AI shows its face as pointless bodyguards and allies who end up dying and not helping any time at all. Meanwhile by yourself you can slay 1,000 enemies and 15 officers without breaking a sweat, securing gates and killing officers becomes repetitive and stupid, new level designs conintue your quest and the story is somewhat fun. But the fact that every time you jump near enemies you are automatically knocked down or when yuo switch characters who have no exp and end up dying bye the first arrow that hits them........ [...]

Dynasty Warriors 4 is about the three kingdoms( Wu, Shu, and Wei ) fighting against each other for china. There are also other characters that you will encounter like LuBu and Dong Zhuo. Liu Bei is the commander of the Shu forces, Cao Cao is the commander of the Wei forces, and Sun Jian is the commander of the Wu forces. You can choose to play either musou mode, free mode, versus mode, challenge mode, and you can also create your own character. There over 50 levels to play and there are secret characters and items to get. (...) This is a great strategy game that has a good storyline. The graphics are great, especially the cut scenes. I highly recommend this game. If you like this game you should read the Three Kingdoms book.

I love this game, its so tight. Everything about the game is top class, the generals are aight and the stages are straight. The things that get me are the bodyguards, if you're training them to be all they can be, why is it that sometimes you have to bodyguard your bodyguards. Mine sometimes die, which is not bad but they still recieve B.G. points and there rank goes up. I can't seem to get any of there stats at max. when this happens. And one more thing, to play 2players, what all do I have to do. I've completed all the musou modes(starting:Shu, Wu, Wei)(then Yellow Turban, Lu Bu, Dong Zhou, Nannan, Yuan Shao), is there more to it.....come on help a brother out!!!
But all in all, man, the game is above the previous releases of the game:(Dynasty Warriors 1, 2, & 3.
............GREAT GAME...........

Dynasty Warriors 4 is nothing better than DW3, but is still an excellent game. That is, if all you like to do is go around and kill hundreds of soldiers. If you're an idiot, like me, and you can't really play thinking games that well, and all you like to do is kill people, than this is the game for you. There is not much stradegy involved, unless you count the searching for troops to kill with the map on the pause menu counts. This is why I liked this game. Even if you are a stinker, sorry, thinker, than this would still be an excellent game to rent, but don't be depressed when all you do is go around killing little 6-man squads with one powerful blow, then going on to another one.
A very good game!!!!!!!!!!!
