I have waited and waited for another American version DBZ game to hit the market, I know dragonball final bout came in a limited American version. But who can afford to go online to an auction site and pay [$$$]for a game not me. But my patients has paid off BIG TIME with the release of
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai one word for this game SWEET after you complete the story portion of the game as Goku you can continue to play from other charters perspective vegeta, krillin my favorite part has to be the story from cell game in which he swallows krillin instead of android 17 you have to see it to believe it
This game is one of the greatest PS2 games ever and the graphics are and game play is great.
Become super vegeta and truly become the PRINCE OF ALL SAIYANS.
Good, but this is not a teen video game!

This is a good video game, including the world tournament, but only one problem, this is not much of a video game, so you should have just rated it E for violence. I give it a **** (4 out of 5).
For the younger audience only

Let me first say that I am not a 'fan' of the series. But I have seen a few episodes, and I must say that if this game was a perfect recreation of the show, I would most likely love it. But, regrettably, it is not. The music is rather boring and repetitive (compare to Final Fantasy X's score.) The game begins with the narration "Goku, the victor of many great battles, was out with his son Gohan". Come on. Begin it with an FMV battle sequence or something flashy. The story mode is ridiculously short and easy, and they cut out most of the great episodes and scenes to make it that way. I.E. remember when Vegeta takes care of android...19? The fat one, anyway. They got rid of that...perhaps it was too violent. At any rate, combos are so hard to pull off that it's a much better strategy to just kick and punch, and guard wisely. I beat it in an hour that way. And they should have added in jumping.
So, all this has lead me to believe that this game is designed, and certainly appropriate, for the younger audience. There are even images from the original Dragonball in the menu scenes, which disturbed me. If you like a lot of cutesy corny stuff and a decent fight engine, get it. If your testosterone is raging to new hieghts, blow your fifty dollars on Enter the Matrix. Buy Tekken. Buy Mortal Kombat. Get a Gamecube and buy Super Smash Bros. You'll be glad.
Of course, I only played for two hours before my attention was permanently dragged away by a musty old copy of Resident Evil: Code Veronica X that I got at the local OnCue for fifteen bucks. So perhaps there's more there than I've seen. But even beyond the lameness of it, the fighting just doesn't compare.
Great But Not All That

I have never seen a full episode of DBZ, and never plan on doing so, but I must admit, this game has awesome gameplay. the plot could be better though.
One of the very best fighting games in a while

If you have ever played Dragon Ball GT Final Bout, this game is very similar to it, apart from the emensly easier controls that this game offers. If haven't ever played Final Bout, then let me fill you in. Final Bout is probably the best DBZ game out there besides this one. It came out for playstation a while ago so the graphics aren't very good, but good for a playstation game. This game is basically an enhanced version of Final Bout, except this game doesn't cover the Buu saga and Dragon Ball GT like Final Bout does. It does though however cover much more stuff before Final Bout does. The oldest character in Final Bout is probably Trunks or Goku from the Cell saga. This game has characters from the Friza and Saiyjin (is that how you spell it?) saga. And this game actually follows the story, not just you fight random characters like yourself as you do in Final Bout. The SSJ (Super Saiyjin) system is also much better in this game. If you are a saiyjin with that ability you can actually become an SSJ during a fight instead of starting out like that and staying that way as you do in Final Bout, plus there is a considerable difference in stregnth when a saiyjin becomes a SSJ. Its also handy that you can stay like that until somebody seriously hurts you. There is only one thing that is truly annoying in this game. It doesn't allow you to fly unless you knock your opponent into the air and follow him/her. But that doesn't really matter since its more fun fighting on the ground anyway. It is also very realistic in the sense that, for example only Teen Gohan can become SSJ2 and you can follow the story as any character and you will actually fight who that character fights in the show. For example, if you choose to play story mode as Vegeta, you will have to fight Goku during the Saiyjin saga, and the people like Zarbon and Dodoria in the Friza saga, but you will never actually fight final form Friza because Vegeta never does that in the show. I think this game is very well made and an excellent buy. I strongly recommend it.
(1-10)
Gameplay: 9 (controls could be a little bit easier, but much better than Final Bout. The controls in that game are SO hard!!!)
Graphics: 8 (I've seen better on other PS2 games, but the movement is good)
Sound: 6 (Not overly interesting or cool, just average)
Arenas/Background: 10 (Very cool, for example one of the battlegrounds is Kami's Lookout. If you fight on Kami's Lookout and you fire something like Goku's Spirit Bomb, then it destroys the lookout and sends your opponent flying to earth, and you would then be forced to follow him. If you were to do something like that again while you were on the ground, then it would creat a huge crater in the ground and you would have to fight in that. Incredibly realistic, but still limited, you can't go wherever you want, which actually isn't bad at all!)
Overall Game: 8.5 - 9.5 REALLY GOOD GAME!!!!
10 stars!! Best Game!!!!!!!

DBZ fans here is the game of the millenium! This game follows the story line perfectly! And for those of you who can't play teen games there's 2 things for teen, fighting and when Piccolo kills Raditz with the special beam cannon, you can see the cannon go through Raditz and Goku and the little hole where it was shot, but it's not very realistic and it's not like you're gonna do the Special Beam Cannon through antone so it doesn't matter. Anyway, buying stuff from Popo and winning money and customizing people this game has EVERYTHING! The graphics are not amazing but still pretty good. I highly recommend buying this game and NOT renting it. Although I rented it and completed 95% of it I still wonna buy it, that's how much i like! Even if you don't like DBZ you'll still like it. A GREAT GAME!!!!!!!
An Amazing Game!

When I first bought this game, I didn't know what to expect...having read no reviews, I had no idea if it was an RPG, a head to head fighter, or even something else. When you first start the game...you get to choose different play modes, ranging from story mode to practice to tournament, to skill edit...etc, etc. Here is my take on the different areas of the game:
STORY MODE!
You basically travel through the Frieza, Cell, and Saiyan Sagas fighting the various enemies that the various characters encountered, playing as Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, and Ginyu. After you first beat the story mode, if you return to it you can take various different paths to fight more enemies. As you travel through, you unlock characters and moves, that you can later use to customize your characters.
Practice:
Practice your moves against any opponent, setting them to various levels of difficulty. Practice using combos and special moves here.
Tournament:
Compete in the world martial arts tournament, getting money if you win the entire thing. You can play as any character and are matched up against random foes. Use your money later to buy moves that you can use to cuztomize your character.
Edit Skills:
Select, Trade, and Buy skills in this area. You can choose what you want the characters to use...and ultimately create, well, the ULtimate CHARACTER!!!
Multiplayer:
Exactly what it says...basically square off against your friends!
Other Key Info:
This game has great graphics, that look much like the television show, and are 3-D! There are hundreds of moves, which are both easy and difficult to pull off in battle and to master. In all, this is a great game...both as single player, and as a party game!
Good game, but frustrating

I am a die-hard dbz fan and love the game. The graphics are awesome and it follows the storyline quite well. Unfortunately, the game is very difficult to play. You have to memorize combos and execute them exactly to do a special move. I found the storyline and tournament mode to be very difficult to win even with a "very easy" difficulty setting. Fun game, but very frustrating. Like driving, you may not want to play while you're upset. It really adds to the frustration.
