big good complex and limited

by 3 stars i mean that the good outweighs the bad. this is a positive review, recommended, but certainly not a glowing review. if i were more the kind of person who became deeply involved with a game for months i might be giving this a better review though i would still have some issues, but let's face it, every game has issues.

the positives:

graphics. the huge go anywhere world is pretty darn neat looking. oddly enough i sometimes found myself a bit annoyed at having to kill things and complete tasks as i was more interested in being a tourist.

difficulty: i like easy games. i like difficulty levels where i can choose "easy". as far as i remember this game sadly had no such options, however there are so many options and ways around things that even being fairly ungifted at games i was able to have a not too death incurring time of it. i mean, sure, you can fight your way to being a stronger character, but you can also barter and buy your way to being a stronger character too.

saving: i'm pretty sure i was able to save pretty much anytime. i appreciate that more and more on my computer as it seems fewer and fewer games allow it.

negatives:

character/story: i thought the characters and peoples of the game were really pretty ugly and lacking in personality. the dearth of real spoken dialogue and the pace of the game just made the storyline and human interaction part of the game feel lifeless to me. i found it hard to feel anything mattered.

finding things: mapping and locating stuff i just found to be onerous. i am really not a fan of route finding in games and some quest stuff i just could not find.

complexity: this is probably kind of a positive as well, or at least might be for you, but all the potions and spell and soul gem things (what were they called) were a bit overwhelming for me and i didn't have enough interest to stick with the game long enough to work it all out. if the manual or game had some clearer instructions on just exactly how some of this stuff worked i might have lasted longer.

conclusion: it's certainly a neat game to take a look at. but i am on the one hand a bit too fickle for it and on the other a bit too character story oriented for it and so am a much bigger fan of the knights of the old republic kind of game. but this game really is a bit of a marvel (though looking to be vastly overshadowed by the upcoming installment).

a fantastic game - from a very casual gamer

I am what I would consider a non-gamer, or a casual gamer. I have an old GameBoy I tote around to fool around with, I play KOTOR II on and off as well as SIMS 2 depending on the mood. I have a hard time with beginning games all enthusiastic and then just dropping them a month later - only to return to them a year later. This is one reason that Morrowind sounded so appealing to me. There is a main quest but there are a gazillion different side quests, and one can just wander the expansive countryside (by design or usually b/c they are lost lol) for hours. Mods from sites like Planet Elder Scrolls add everything from entire new quests to clothing stores you can operate yourself. There is simply so much to do - no matter what you interest that it is hard to get bored. If you are a hack and slash type person there are tones of opportunities to be that person and advance in a guild's ranks at the same time. If you are more of a non-combatant you can chose to be a monk or a pilgrim - while you WILL have to fight, it is not the focus of your character's life. If you are horrible with dying at every turn there is also a game difficulty slider (0-100 scale) that effectively makes your life easier so that you can better appreciate the game without constantly worrying about how you will make it out of this one!

The game does have a few cons though, but nothing too earth shattering.

1) For someone whose experience with CRPGs was confined to point-and-click adventures the world of Morrowind was overwhelming at first. I felt like I was faced with a massive learning curve - just thrust into a world not knowing what the heck I was supposed to be doing. This really is not much of a con though b/c the expansiveness of the game is what makes it fantastic. Once you figure out what you are doing you can really get into it and enjoy it for what it is.

2) The BIGGEST con that anyone you talk to will point out, is that this game is riddled with bugs and glitches - even with the patches installed. For me this is a huge con, and I quickly learned to quicksave the game after I'd done anything of import so I wouldn't have to go back and do it again if my game crashed on me. The thing with this though, is it is only a con if you make it one. That game is so unique in many ways that while people complain to no end about the crashes and bugs, love of the game reigns supreme and you just live with it. You adapt your gaming style to it and move on. Please do not pass the game up just because you don't want to deal with the bugs - in the end they aren't as overwhelming as one would like to have you believe.

Trust me, this is one of the best 20 gaming dollars you will ever spend but be forewarned ... it is HIGHLY addictive. Once you catch the Morrowind bug there is no turning back :)

Not just a simple rpg

I've had this game for months and still never feel bored playing it. I just recently completed the main quest after all these months because there is so much you can do in addition to the main story. I spent a lot of time simply messing around with character ideas just because the system leaves a lot of room to play with. More recently Ive been checking out Mods people have made for the game through the contstruction set and from what I've seen, the mods made through the contstruction set merge very well into the game itself and I am now looking into trying out the construction set myself to add a completely new dimention to my Morrowind experience. What also sets Morrowind above other rpgs is the incredible graphics offered. Everything including the weather looks very realistic and beautiful. The first time I saw the night sky in the game, I just stood there and stared. The only problem you might have is that you do need an upper end PC to fully enjoy everything, but Morrowind is also available on X-box for those with older machines. This is a game is a purchase you won't regret.

I would give this more than 5 stars if I could!

This game REDEFINED my definition of a good RPG. One of my favorite aspects is that the player is not relegated to a "third-person" view. That is, the player directly controls combat, instead of issueing vague "attack" commands. The graphics are incredible, unrivaled even by Neverwinter Nights or its expansions. The sheer DEPTH of the gameplay is startling. You can pick up plates from a table, steal pillows from a bed, fight fish in rivers, you have almost unlimited interaction with your environment. In short, this game has beat out, stomped, and dominated every other RPG (even newer ones) that I have ever played. Buy it now or die unfulfilled.

STROKE OF GENIUS

I just want to add to what everyone else is saying, and pay tribute to Morrowind. This game is unbelievable. I played it for some time, with a lot of side quests, and then got stuck looking for Incarnate Cave and the Moon-and-Star Ring. At that point I completely deserted the main quest and just wondered the land getting into adventures and honing my skills. I must admit I earned terrible reputation during that time. My "Bounty" was around 25000. When I got tired of that I stopped playing for a year or so. Recently I resumed the play, and managed to find my way further through the main story line. I am having fun just like before, if not even more. Graphics and sound are excellent, but the true greatness of this game lays in one feature. It is incredibly immersive, and that implies numerous high quality traits: story; freedom (you can go anywhere, do anything, and you can totally forget about the main quest); character evolvement; huge population of NPC's with their own histories and attributes; unbelievably interactive environment; countless side quests and many of them have nothing to do with the main quest (I have tons of uncompleted quests in my Journal). Any computer owner that has not played this game should be brought to charges.

Best RPG on the PC

Wow, this game is awesome. At first i was a little skeptical about it but after about 10 minutes (enough to get past the first little part) i was hooked. I played it almost non-stop for about a month to finish it. There are tons of side quests and missions for you to do for different guilds (fighter, thieves, mage, etc.) and after completing them you can earn rankings within the guilds. You gain levels like in any RPG but in this game you gain levels by getting enough skill points for your class, and man are there a lot of them. There is 21 classes overall and on top of that if you don't like any or would prefer, you can make your own class with its own major skills.

There is plenty of armor and weapons to keep you busy collecting them. One of the problems with the original game is lack of enemy types, but with the expansions that is taken care of. The sound and graphics are rich and detailed even without that $500 ATI 9800XT. I began this game with a ATI 9000 (you can get one for around $50 now) and it ran more than smooth. This is a game for any type of gamer and i would recommend buying it whatever your age.

Morrowind

First of all, I'm not going to get into the concrete details such as races, abilities, skills etc. because there are many other reviews that cover that aspect of the game.

If you are looking for RPG's that strictly border along the lines of Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, NWN and the such, Morrowind is not for you. However, if you are just any kind of RPG fan, or just someone looking for a great game, try out Morrowind.

There are tons of possibilities, and the gameplay doesn't require you to follow any strict storyline unless you choose to. The world of Vvardenfell is absolutely huge, not to mention gorgeous. The environment is amazing, with realistic weather and a real looking sun and sky (moving clouds, sun's glare etc). I can't stress enough how important a nice video card is in order to fully experience and appreciate the world of Morrowind.

I will only briefly cover the character and weapon elements- -There are literally hundreds of different items; not just with different names, but different appearences and functions. NPC's are amazingly crafted, each with its own personality and importance. There are many, many different monsters and creatures as well; some hostile, some not.

Now to cover the bugs:
There are not too many bugs in the game, but the few that are are sometimes quite annoying.
Sometimes when a monsters attacks you, it will get stuck in the earth or in a wall. This can be an annoyance, especially because it happens very often.
Another annoying bug is that if you hire a henchman or if you are escorting an NPC, they also get stuck, and you may be very far ahead of them when you finally realize they are not behind you. You have to turn around and travel the way you came until you find that certain character, and trust me, its not easy.

With that out of the way, Morrowind is a five star game, no doubt. But like I said before, a high end video card, such as a Radeon 9800 pro, is a MUST. Only then can you fully appreciate the amount of skill put into this wonderfully crafted game.

Morriwind wins my five stars

This game is the greatest masterpeice of technology and hard work I have ever seen. I wil not go into detail, as that has already been done in the other reveiws. But the sheer infinity of items, skills, weapons, armor, enemys, and the fact that the main story doesnt even have to apply to you have gotten this game five stars and a G.O.T.Y. award. My favorite activity is to trap wild creatures with soultrap, a spell that lets you capture a soul, put it in a soulgem, then enchant any items you have with a spell effect like fire damage. Here are my statistics of all aspects of the game. (on a scale of 1-10)
Graphics-9[]
The models for the characters and monsters are slightly what you would call blocky, like the arm slides up off the shoulder when the person moves. But the textures and effects are perfected.

Music, S.E.(Sound effects), Etc.-8[]
They are perfect, the best music you could have on an RPG. But, they start to repeat after a few hours, like when you have alot of health and your fighting and you make the same noise over and over when you get hit.

Creativity-20[]
The absolute best imagination that can be displayed in a game. Thousands of items, NPCs(Characters), towns, creatures, all with different names!!

Gameplay-6[](with mods, 7)
The gameplay is...unperfected. It can become extremley boring if you are trying to make it to a faraway town or person. If you are using mods, it can be entertaining to just oblitherate everything in your path, then set your crime level to 0 when you reach the person. And fighting is completley retarded. You just click the mouse and hope you kill the dude. You cant use any kind of stratagy.
Well, there you go. Overall, it gets an 8. I strongly reccomend this game to any RPG fan.

#1 all-time best game ever created... PERIOD.

Ok, I've been playing this game for just over a year now, and I have to say, it really IS the best game ever made. There is a truly infinite amount of gameplay, the graphics are awesome, and... you can do anything you want, from slaughtering an entire village for no reason at all, to building a castle out of pillows for the fun of it, and maybe hiding all of your precious items there. Overall, this game gets a 10 out of 10, 5 stars out of 5 stars, and I will be playing it for the rest of my life. :)
