GREAT Game

I love the open-ended nature of this game. There's SO MUCH to do, so many side quests, so many locations and characters. I can't get over how how much fun I had exploring the expansive world. It's easy to get up and running quickly in the game, and once you're going, you'll spend many hours losing yourself in this world.

Whoever says this game sucks, sucks

after having morrowind for 3 years, I still haven't gotten tired of it. There is no question, Morrowind is bigger and in my opinion better then Fable and Halo 2. I beat moth games in my spare time, in around a week. I admit Morrowind takes a little while to get the hang of, it is a *BIG* game, even I get lost sometimes. It's almost like a twisted Sims game. And it's almost like bigger and better then a regular RPG, in this game you can join a cults, become a vampire, or a wearwolf, there is even a strip club....... you can own a stronghld, get married to crazy cat, free slaves, become a GOD! The only things holding you back are the Ordinators.

Best Game I've Ever Played

Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Game of the Year Edition is the best game I've ever played. It's just amazing with so much content that it will probably take me many, many years to get to it all. And that's just Morrowind. This edition of the game comes with two expansion packs (Tribunal and Bloodmoon) that should tack on a few more years.

There are great guild quests (mages, fighters, thieves, plus many more), miscellaneous quests, and a main quest that you can complete. However, one of the great things about this game is that it is completely open ended. You can go anywhere and do anything you want, and you don't have to do the quests if you don't want to. The quests do give you rewards and gets you familiar with Morrowind so I would recommend doing some of them at the beginning.

You can build any imaginable character in Morrowind, and there are many races, classes, and skills you can choose from. But one of the best parts about this game is that it comes with an editor meaning you can make any custom content you can think of. You can make your own races or classes, and you can make a whole new world to play in if you have the time. The editor is the same one that was used to make the Elder Scrolls III so the sky is the limit.

This review is supposed to be for the "Game of the Year Edition", which includes the expansion packs, and since I have not even gotten close to starting either expansion this review is really all about Morrowind. If I waited to write this after I played through both expansion packs, it would be in at least 5 years or so. That's how extensive this game is, and 5 years is an underestimate.

I would highly recommend this game to anyone especially RPG fans. This is by far the best RPG I have ever played. I also recommend buying the Elder Scrolls III guide, which is over 400 pages long giving you an idea how big this game is. The guide has been very helpful to me, and there are so many things I would have missed if I didn't have it.

worth the purchase

. . . especially since the new one came out and the price is so low. Complaints seem to be coming from people who either want more direction (this game is hugely "open") or who think the game is too big for it's own good. It is true, that because the world is huge the dungeons, caves, tombs, etc all begin to look alike. However, stick to the mainline if you get bored of plundering yet another tomb (there are a huge # of them . . . I had to keep a list of the ones I'd gone to so I wouldn't forget).

I think some of the complaints about speed are from people who didn't stick with the game. Speed, after all, is an attribute. So yes, when you first start out, it takes FOREVER to walk/run anywhere. However, as you increase your speed stat, you increase your actual speed. After playing lots of games where "speed" increases don't actually result in greater speed, just a better ability to hit a target, I thought that was very cool.

Perhaps the best 20 bucks I ever spent

Where to begin.. There is so much to say about this game, because there is so much to do. This game is massive. I just recently picked it up, and I cannot believe I waited this long to play it. I heard a lot of good things about Morrowind from friends, and online reviews.. it is confirmed, I am hooked on this games. There are a few important things to point out about it, however, as this game is definitly not for everyone..

Yes, this is an adventure RPG.. and a massive one. It is not in the same format as games such as Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Star Ocean, ect.. sure, it takes quite some time to get to your destination if you have to travel a long distance, but this game is in real time, and the island is massive.. not to mention there are so many lairs scattered around the world, which makes for a TON of exploration on top of your already robust agenda.

The character customization in this game is on par if not better than all other character customization tools I have used in a single player PC RPG.

With this in mind, this game takes at least some commitment. I have been able to advance my Nord Battle Mage just fine, even though I have somewhat of a busy schedule.. you do not need to have 24 hours free, but it is still good to play it when you can because it has a habit of calling out to you saying 'play me, play me.', it is adicting. You choose your own path in this game.

If you are into fantasy, character development, a real time environment and a sense of adventure, this game just may be what you are looking for!

STAY AWAY if you want to have a LIFE

The wide range of options will create a life inside of a life.

If the game is not enough, it is the MODS. You can spend hours perusing the mods that do everything from bug fixing the game(yes there are a few quests and other things that just may not/ will not work right hence the "unofficial Morrowind patch,") to mods that make ones life easier- "better herbilism mod" that removes plants once they are examined (so you don't keep reexploring the same empty plant over and over again) to a sappy romance with babies and even graphic adult addon lovemaking mod!

You can spend many days and weeks exploring these mods (there are at least THOUSANDS) installing and reordering and tweaking and reloading not ever leave the town of Seyda Neen (the first blurb of a burg on the map).

And if that's not enough, there is a game editor included that allows one to make their own mods, or perhaps more importantly, modify someone elses mod to your own tastes. The scripts and programming of this editor and utilities easily available elsewhere also allow one to add models and programe creatures and other characters from outside sources into the game. If you learn everything about this editor and addon utilities, by the time you are done you can work for one of the great 3d animation houses somewhere. Infact, I suspect the vast majority of modmakers never finished the game, they got going on this...

Can I recommend this game? Yes no, if you want a life and have bills to pay, people to see , then beware, but at least I think its safer than maybe some of the online games which websites are dedicated for "addiction recovery."

I give it a 4 for fun and because to make some tasks less tedious such as the plants, as mentioned above, a mod is needed (extra work required). Or maybe I'm swinging and hit a companion by accident and suddenly they are whaling away at me--ugh reload last save. Alot of time can be spent looking at that reload screen. Fun otherwise.

I give it a 4 overall because once again the access to mods is required to remove some of the bugs or an inadvertant action on the players part (oops, killed him by mistake) some quests become unaccomplishable.

But I give it 6 stars (bonus star) for flexibility to do almost anything you want with it.

Really Awesome But Sometimes Boring

Morrowind is an awesome game. Its about a fantasy world (with magic and all)and you are a former prisoner set free into it (for some reason) by the emperor. This is the main quest.
However, you can just ignore the main quest and just go off into this amazing world and experience it all. You can join a Guild and struggle up the ladder to the ranks of Grandmaster, or you can just travel around looking for the best items, and perhaps trying to sell them for high prices. (more on that later.)
The land is huge, and with the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions it gets even bigger. You start out in the small village of Seyda Neen and an then travel all over--to the perpetually rainy Balmora to the huge many-quartered Vivec to the rural surrounding islands. The huge size and huge amounts of quests makes for over 200 hours of gameplay.
Here's some info on the different parts of Morrowind.
Guilds--There are many different guilds in Morrowind. Theres a Mages Guild and a Fighters Guild, a Thieves Guild, and my personal favorite, the Morag Tong Guild. Most of these guilds you can walk into and join, then start out on a series of Guild-issued quests. For the Morag Tong, the super-secret guild of assasins, you have to find their secret lair in the sewers of Vivec, then assasinate someone to prove your worth, than finally you're in. Morag Tong rocks out loud, by the way.
Skills--when you start the game, you can totally choose your path thru life. First choose a class, which offers different innate magics and skill bonuses, then choose what you want to focus on. If youre into magic, get Destruction or Alteration (different kinds of magic) and if you like buying low and selling high, get some good Mercentile. Unlike other games (KOTOR, City of Heroes)your skill increases not when you level up but when you use it a lot. You do level up though--you get to then upgrade your Attributes, like Strengh and Speed. The different choices in skills make for unique gameplay every time.
Fighting--To swing your sword, ax or spear, or to throw a knife or ninja star, or to shoot your bow or to punch someone or to use magic, simply click the left mouse button. The huge variety in weaponry is great, so if you really like antique tontos or magic swords, this game is for you. At first you might have some difficulty with the fighting mechanisms, but youll soon get used to it--you better, anyway. Oh, and you cant go around killing random people--youll get arrested and spend some time in prison, which makes your skills decrease. Dont go attacking gaurds either--they're super-strong. (In the ever-awesome Morag Tong guild, when you kill your target simply show the guards the contract you got from your supierors and youll be okay.)
People--In the game, there are lots of computer-controlled characters. Most arent very evolved, but talk to everyone cuz you never know who has armor for sale or who will give you a quest. Also, sometimes you need to bribe them or intimidate them. That falls under the skill of Speechcraft. Also, if you have a good Sneak skill, u can pickpocket them.Awesome, i know.
Graphics And Sound--Awesome. Good graphics, and the way weather changes is real cool. Sound is really, really good, from the comments people throw at you to the sound of thunder to the epic soundtrack, its probably the best ive ever encountered.
Annoying Parts--Like I mentioned, the AI arent that smart. Also, the open ended gameplay can leave you wandering around without a thing to do, which just kills my sense of fun.
The worst part is the travelling. You have to walk EVERYWHERE, and usually your guy isnt that fast. You can spend a half hour walking from Vivec to Caldera, kill someone for the morag tong, and spend a half hour walking back. Its REALLY annoying. Luckily, there are some quick travel methods--teleportation spells and boats and giant beasts called silt striders, which are a lllliiitttlle bit like huge taxis.

As you can see, there are only a few bad things. However, the game really takes a lot of, well, commitment, as in things take a long time to accomplish. But if youre willing to give that time in exchange for an awesome, immersive, theoretically endless game, Morrowind is for you. :)

Definately not for the faint of heart!

This world presented in this game is immersive, detailed and intriguing; Bethesda obviously put a great deal of effort into making a game for die-hard RPG fans. This being said...

I couldn't keep playing it. This game is not for the occasional gamer looking to sneak in a couple of hours after work--this game is for those willing to devote entire weeks and even months to exploration and character development. The pace comes closer to approximating that of real life than any I have ever seen--as for me, I don't have that kind of time! For fans of the Baldur's Gate series and KOTOR, don't expect similar gameplay or gamespeed.

In conclusion, this game is a work of art but plan on budgeting a huge chunk of time if you want to appreciate it.

Easily one of the best RPGs of all time

I bought Morrowind GOTY on a whim, and I don't regret it. I was blown away by the size and depth of the game world. You could easily spend half a day just playing side quests, working your way up the ranks of the dozen or so guilds and organizations and not even touching the main quest in the process. Basically you have near-total freedom--go where you want to go, do what you want to do. You can even download new user-created adventures and addons (or make one of your own with the included Elder Scrolls Construction Set) to enhance your experience. A very active custom content community churns out countless new clothing items, quests, and even better bodies. (Check out psychodogstudios.net for more information about that.)

This flexibility extends to character creation as well. There are plenty of races to choose from, each with their advantages and disadvantages. A variety of predefined classes are provided, but they make it easy for you to define a fully custom class if you so desire. Character development doesn't end at creation; as you progress through the game, you get better at the skills you use the most. The more you use your trusty longsword, the more effective your kills. The more you sneak around, the better your chances become of passing through undetected.

And the graphics--wow! You're given the choice of first- or third-person perspective, all the better for immersing you in the many detailed, lush environments. You really have to see it to believe it. Controls are a little complex, but given the scope of the game, I more or less expect that. And once you're used to it, you don't even think about it.

The only thing that would make this absolutely perfect would be a multiplayer component of some sort. But the single-player experience is so comprehensive that I can't really complain. In short, this game is bound to be a classic and should have a place in your collection.

1 and 1/2 years and still going.

When I first got Morrowind it was in August of 2003. I was simply stunned about the graphics and the gameplay. I could do literally whatever I wanted. Well it is now 2005 and Im finishing up Bloodmoon and still having a blast. I have yet to uncover all of the areas but am hoping to get it done before the end of the year. WARNING! This games is addictive and overwhelming, do not attempt to play when you have finals! Like I said a excellent game which I will keep for its great replay value.
