If you like fantast role playing games you will love this. Ive played many computer based RPGs over the years and this is hands down my favourite. I used to own it on the X-Box but having got rid of that system a while back I simply had to have this game again. What I love about this game is the freedome to go pretty much anywhere you want and the fact that you dont have to stick to the plot if you dont want to (for example I once got bored of doing the plots, saved my game and decided to go on a killing spree destroying every one in every village - maybe i have problems!!) The graphics and sound are amazing and it looks better (system dependent I guess) than the X-Box version.
My only complaints (but still deserves five stars!) would be, as mentioned by a previous reviewer, the melee weapon combat system can be a little tedious at times - but you can easily mix it up a little by getting a bow and arrows or casting spells. Another thing that could I would change is the lack of a horse - in Daggerfall (an earlier but similar version) you got to ride around on a horse which made travelling between cities much faster - I would have liked to have seen this feature present again in Morrowind.
A note of interest for Morrowind owners

I agree with a bulk of all the reviews that i have read relating to Morrowind. This game is Superb and to date, my favorite game of all time. I have played all the games in the series and they only get better and better. I eagerly await the sequel (Oblivion) when it comes out this fall. Every time i boot up this game, I get sucked in.
If you really love this game though , you owe it to yourself to hunt down the graphics mods for it. Some dedicated fans have completely redone all the textures in the game, taking the graphics up to the next level.
There are thousands of mods. I highly recommend the lighting mod, better heads and better bodies mods. These mods greatly enhance the graphics while not touching the gameplay (although plenty of them change that too).
If i had to improve one thing, it would be the combat. Its not horrible but its not revolutionary either.
Do yourself a favor if you even think this game is remotely interesting, BUY IT! You will not regret it.
To the nay-sayers

It's obvious that those who posted negative reviews of this game failed to put in the playing-time to level-up. I admit, I too was frustrated during the first few hours of play. You really do start this game as a blank slate. Your character is boring, and practically incompetent at any type of skill, from killing, to casting, to lock-picking. The beginning quests are mundane. I couldn't believe I'd paid for a game where I'd have to run errands for middle management. But after I got those smaller quests out of the way and started to develop a few skills, the game really started to take off.
As your character levels-up, the pace begins to quicken (your character actually runs faster too). If you're interested in a quick play, I recommend focusing on a handful of skills. Trying to complete all the missions will actually slow you down in the major arc of the game. Besides, you can always go back and replay the game as a different type of character. Either way you choose to play, the character/skill development is really significant. You really don't get a fair sense of how the game play develops until after you've put in at least a solid week of playing.
From Final Fantasy To Guild Wars....

I've played many, many role playing/fantasy games: Icewind Dale, Guild Wars, Final Fantasy (all of 'em), Planescape Torment, Diablo II to name only a few. All highly regarded as the best of the best. Ya' know what? The Morrowind Prophecies tops them all! Why? It is arguably the most "non-linear", replayable game ever. I do not think you could ever play this game the same way twice or even explore everything there is to the first time through (or the second or the third!!). The two expansion discs Tribunal & Bloodmoon make the original even better (I suggest installing the expansion discs at the very beginning). I liken this game to a fantasy adventure novel you are writing yourself. A story you are developing minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day; and you are watching it unfold right in front of you. If you have played any of the games I mentioned above, you owe yourself this game!
By the way, you need to purchase the Official Game Guide. It is essential for truely experiencing the game to the fullest.
One of the best RPG's ever!

I'd have to start off saying that Morrowind has been one of the most unique RPG's I've played. It's been at least as immersive and engaging as Baldur's Gate 2 or Planescape: Torment. The developers accomplished what they wanted to; to make a game where one can do as he/she pleases. There are countless ways to play through this game! Playing through as a thief type character is by far different than playing through as a more combat oriented character. The world is huge, and it takes hours upon hours to explore. There's so much that if you don't stop and turn around sometimes, you're bound to miss the enterance to an anscesteral tomb or a smugglers cave.
Now about some technical things. I'm running this game on a P4, 2.53 ghz, 768mb PC2700 memory, GeForce4 4200 Ti GPU. The game runs great at 1024x768 resolution with full shadows and distance. Since the graphics are a little dated, and I more than excede the recommended system, I've chosen to install sevaral mods (which is another great way to keep this game fresh!). Most notably, the "Better Bodies", "Better Heads" and "Morrowind Comes Alive." The first 2 make the humanoid people look less blocky and more realistic. The Morrowind Comes Alive adds many more NPC's (generic travelers, to ones that have something to offer; be it goods to sell or hostile bandits with nice looot) at random places, giving the game even more of an immersion factor.
Over all, I highly recommend this game. In fact, I bought it to keep me from wanting to play World of Warcraft, and it's worked!
Playing this after playing Oblivion

This is the second Elder Scrolls game I've played, the first being Oblivion. I really enjoyed Oblivion and decided to give this one a try, and I must say I've really enjoyed it so far. Still on the main quest, though right now I'm gonna join the Morag Tong.
Now first off, if you're an impatient type, or really easily confused, then this game is not for you. This game takes time and patience to really enjoy. One thing I did when I first started playing; I paid attention to what people said and went where I was told to go. I know it's a game that really gives you freedom to do what you want, but for someone just starting out on the series, just follow the main quest line and make sure to pay attention to what people say, and just go where you need to. Then, once you've become more accustomed to how things work, then I'd suggest exploring some.
You'll often come across people on the roads with quests they'll want to give you that'll often deviate from your current objective. I would actually suggest helping them out, as the journal is often enough to get you back on track afterwards. Just remember to stay on the roads, and look at every sign you come across so you know which way to go.
In closing, if you have patience and are willing to put some serious time into the game, then I'd suggest getting this. It's an older game, and the graphics are clearly outdated, but it can be quite an enjoyable experience. In fact, I'm liking it more than Oblivion, which had my attention for a few months. No telling when I'll be done with this one.
Much better than Oblivion. Let the flame wars begin.

First off, I love Oblivion. Nobody panic.
But I've taken a breather because I started to get... dare I say it... Bored with Oblivion. Admittedly, I have 70 hours into it and my girlfriend hisses whenever ANYONE brings it up... But just to cool me jets and check out some of the books and so on that tie in with Oblivion, I popped Morrowind into the ol' Xbox and went to town. And I remembered how utterly mesmerising it is.
Sure, the graphics are pretty crappy... And the 'dungeons' are sometimes smaller than a one bedroom apartment... And if you have an older Xbox, from the first through third wave or so, it WILL freeze.. (And lets not get into the PC version, which got even less stable with advances in videocard and processor technology)... I'm not arguing those points with anyone. On the other hand, it has what Oblivion (and nearly every RPG ever) does not have, and that is Total Immersion. Please note the capitalization there.
Oblivion is amazingly good. Its a five out of five.. A blockbuster of future classic status. Its all three of the Lord of the Rings movies, rolled into one package.
Heres the thing about Oblivion being the LotR movies. Morrowind is the book. Thats the difference.
Morrowind has a gravity and a sense of reality that Oblivion utterly fails (in my opinion, of course) to capture. Oblivion, while a masterpiece in its own right, feels like it was directed by either John Woo or the guy who directed the first Resident Evil. Right up to the big climactic finish (Although any of you out there who've played Arena, Battlespire, Daggerfall, and Morrowind had your jaws on the floor too, I'll bet).
The final fight in Morrowind is just as cheesy dumb, but the 300 or more hours leading up to it feel as real as real life. Maybe its BECAUSE it looks unpolished, and you have to read the dialogue, that it feels so real, in the way a brilliantly written book absorbs you more than the finest movie can. (thats probably just me again....)
If it helps, Peter Molyneaux ripped Morrowind off so badly for Fable that it makes your head spin(Morrowind and Daggerfall, Elderscrolls II. Think about it).
I have 250 hours or more in Morrowind, and everytime I walk into the ashlands and see a dumner camp full of ashlanders walking against the wind in an ash storm, I subconsiously remember the books you can read in the game, telling the history of the dark elves and their fight for cultural and religous freedom.. Even the hostility the NPC's show reminds you of it.
Everytime I walk into a bookstore and spend three hours of my real life reading FAKE BOOKS because the backstory in the game is so immersive that its the only way fully appreciate whats going on, and its ENGROSSING, I am boggled.
When I can put 200 hours into a game and find out that there are another 50 hours worth of Vampire quests from a friend and spend ANOTHER 50 hrs playing NEW MATERIAL, I am utterly humbled.
I play a LOT of videogames (its what I'm going to school for :) ) and I have more hours logged on Morrowind than I do on any MMORPG or anything else. And thats not likely to change, cuz I'm off to frag daedra with my enchanted Daedra Dai-Katana, just as soon as I send this on.

The AI is awesome, you can interact with EVERY object in the game. The loading is quick. Battles are really fun and rewarding. You can even create your own class! Your character is really customizable in every single way you can think of. You can also create your own spells and enchantments.
Morrowind is my favorite game! I hope it could be yours too!
