don't listen to the wimps that are pouting about swg being broken. if they'd have given it a chance and actually played it some before quitting they'd understand that it's still very fun.

Although, there are a lot of negative reviews here, if you look carefully, you'll notice a common thread among them -- they are almost universally posted here by people who have played the game for 2+ years and don't like the fact that the game was changed. What they don't tell you is that they are mostly the kind of MMO players that have 3+ accounts each, play 10-12 hours a day, obsess over every detail and change in the game, and throw a fit anytime something affects them adversely even in the slightest. Read the forums, you'll see.
I have also been an on and off subscriber to SWG for 2+ years. I have always found the original combat system to be flacid and boring, but I stayed with the game because this system was tolerable for PVP and in groups. In addition, the game had other things to offer, including, of course, the fact that it offers a persistent Star Wars world, unlike any other game.
The NGE significantly improves the combat system. Now, you actually have to actively participate, rather than pushing a button, going to the bathroom, and coming back to find your enemy dead. The controls are just like an FPS game, which to most gamers is perfectly intuitive (contrary to the ramblings of most of the so-called "reviewers" here). People are complaining now, simply because they refuse to learn something new.
In addition, the details of how to play the game are much more accessible. No longer do you have to study the forums for a week each month to figure out what character template is most powerful. No longer do you have to endure months of boring grinding to have a character that stands a chance in PVP. No longer do you have to read an entire treatise on all the aspects of the game to understand how to play it competitively. Is it simplified? Sure. But the changes add their own types of complexity, mainly combat tactics, that never existed in the game. Some people complain that the learning curve has been taken away. But the former complexity never really enhanced the game once you understood it. It was a one-time investment, and just made getting into the game more work.
The NGE still needs work, but in the end, it should be a huge improvement. If you're a Star Wars fan, and like the idea of playing Star Wars in a persistent world (unlike BF2), at least give it a try and decide for yourself.....it's only $15 (or free if you do the trial). Don't let the disgruntled veterans of an old dead MMO discourage you.

These bad reviews are generated by a sadly very vocal minority of old players that are unhappy with the changes.
I myself have been playing for a long time now and belive the change is exactly what this game needs to replace the old and bug ridden coding that caused so many problems of the past.
The new and fresh games engine will alow for bigger and better content. I look forward to the future of SWG.
Slightly different but still fun game.

I originally purchased and activated my SWG account 1 week after the release of An Empire Devided. I have played off and on for nearly 3 years now, and I understand all the issues everyone is having with the complete makeover of the game. However, we all know there are constant patches to every game that change the way we play. Maybe not this substantial but still there.
I'm not extremely excited about the NGE, but I do find it fun to play with. I am a Level 81 Jedi working on reaching 90 (Max Level) and it's like rediscovering a new game. Before all there was to do was grind and grind. Now I think the grinding is a little more barable with the new combat interaction.
I defenitely agree that changing the entire gametype while people have existing subscriptions is borderline illegal, but MMORPGs change.
For anyone thinking of trying this game that didn't play the original SWG, I would say try it out, 20 dollars with a month of free play. I think at least the first month would be enjoyable. Especially since you can start as a jedi. It took me a whole year to get force sensitive, and another year to become a jedi initiate. Wow that's rediculouse. But now, it's all right there.
Nobody asked me, but....

Background: I was one of SWG's original beta testers, and have played this game for around 20 months.
I have serious issues with the way Sony and LucasArts rolled this out, but after a month and a half of patches I've come to the conclusion that it's playable, and frankly more fun than previous incarnations. Take World of Warcraft, add SW Battlefront 2, a touch of Doom, shake well, pour and it's SWG!
The new gameplay has greatly reduced the effectiveness of griefers and exploiters by removing macros and 'attack stacking' in combat. The reduction in professions has made it easier for SOE to control the profession balance. And for new players, the amount of content (in terms of missions) has greatly increased from intro to about combat level 30.
It's not perfect, once you hit level 30 there's a pretty big gap between there and the experience granting missions on Kashykk and Mustafar. And Commando isn't working yet, and smugglers can't smuggle. Add the fact that crafters, with the exception of the architect/shipwright line, are still pretty much useless, and it's obvious that there's still some work to be done. But all in all I've been encouraged by the content of the recent patches-they're heading in the right direction.
There are those who will tell you that your 10 day free trial isn't representative of your experience in SWG, and that there isn't any content after that. I don't agree. The space station is a contained environment accessable only by new players. Like Haven in Ultima Online, it keeps you from being harassed by l33t players looking for an easy duel. Once you leave and enter Mos Eisley, the Legacy Quest will keep you going. For SWG vets, this now includes Jabba's theme park-and yes, you have to do it over. :-)
You've probably read quite a few passionate posts on this site. A lot of folks are frankly grieving over the changes that may have cost them their status as Jedi, elite crafters, etc., which was rightfully earned via blood, sweat, and lots of grinding. They may be a touch resentful that someone can enter the game and choose to be a Jedi from the start, rather than take the long tortuous path to Jedi that existed before. In revenge, they would very much like to see this game go down in flames. Keep that in mind as you read some of these reviews.
It's a 10 day free trial. If you choose to try it, I recommend that you go to a more populated server.

First let me say that even after over 2 years, I still enjoy playing this game.
The Good: This really is a great and fun game... and it is STAR WARS.
The Bad: There's been some shakey ground during its lifespan, but its headed in the right direction.
The Ugly: The resistance to change of some people has given things a bad name. Do not listen to these people. Find out for yourself what a great game this really is.
Now let me get to all the hoopla you see surrounding the game right now. This game began over 2 years ago. While the management of the game has been somewhat questionable, I believe the game is headed in a far better direction than ever before.
The new game is the result of a complete overhaul. Instead of releasing a new title, SOE/LA just redid the old game. This has caused some game veterans to be very upset with these companies. Understand this though... the majority of negative comments you read has more to do with anger than legitimate dislike of the game. Most of these people have not given the new game a chance to see the benefits of it.
Finally I'd like to say that this game is far from finished. Like every other MMORPG, it is an evergrowing and expanding process. The game as it is now is fun as long as you don't take things too seriously, and hopefully will continue to move in the right direction so that players can finally see the game live up to its original slogan:
Live the greatest saga ever told... your own.
A great MMORPG

The starter kit is very fun. You can create your own StarWars Character and live your own StarWars life. I don't understand why a lot of People gave this Game a bad review. The combat is okay, but good enough. The Graphice are also ok, and the Gameplay is Excellent. Getting lots of Credits and exp. takes a long time, but it is Worth it. You can choose your side in the Galactic Civil War. Be Rebels, Imperials, Smugglers, Bandits, and Black Sun Pirates. You can own your own starfighter, and the First one you get is free! You can work for Jabba The Hutt, Princess Leia, and Darth Vader himself! Join the Imperial Navy Or the Rebel Space Fleet. Fight in massive space battles, including Mon Cal Cruisers, Star Destroyers, and much, much more. You should Definitely Check this game out.

I found Star Wars Galaxies quite fun, You will see a lot of reviews on this site about 'Don't buy this game' that is because they are sad people who have a vendetta against Sony, just see the SWG forums and you will see. They don't like the new and improved SWG because they have to start fresh and be on par with the new people to the game and it have made everything more even
The Game has changed a lot from the past, and it is not the game it was a month ago, yes there are still some bugs and issues as there is with all games of this type, but the overall experience is a better one. It is much easier to get into the game now and is much easier to understand, the combat system is more fast paced which gives more excitement and pleasure.
Star Wars Galaxies has become more Star Wars like and I recommend it to all gamers looking for that great Star wars experience.
..and to those that don't like the new game enhancements, pull your socks up look at the game it is now , the New Star wars game, and leave the past behind you..
All for all, try the game out for yourself see how it is as a new Star Wars game, it doen't cost much now, give the 30 days a go and make your own mind up for yourself..
8 out of 10
A very nice game with a huge potential for future expansions

I have been playing this game for more then 2 years already and I still think this is a great game ! I agree that it has seen many changes already since it was first released but that is because the MMO public is changing. When the game was first released the game was all about grinding (doing the same thing over and over again to gain levels). Now with the last 2 expansion packs and the new recent updates they have made the game 100 times more user-friendly : lots of cool quests to do, worlds to explore and easier profession advancements (a clear road forward). It is true that there are still some minor bugs, but that is always the case when such a big update is done. Within a few weeks almost all bugs will be gone because the developers are working hard to get them out. Jedi has indeed become a starter profession, but it is only one of the 9 starter professions (like commando, officer, medic, bounty hunter, smuggler...) It is absolutely not true that 90% are Jedi, I see all kind of professions when I walk around in a city ! Lots of people enjoy being able to play another profession than Jedi because this is one of the few star wars games in which you actually can play another profession than jedi in the star wars world ! I for example like playing a stormtrooper. I sometimes even lead a whole squad of them against a rebel base ! This is the only game out there in which you can do this kind of stuff ! The latest update was intended to change the game in a way so that not only hardcore gamers would feel at home but that also gamers that can only play a couple of hours a day can have fun (like in World of warcraft or everquest 2 (a game made by the same company who made this star wars game)) I suggest you don't listen too much to the opinions of players who have quit this game and are now trying to destroy it just because they don't like the easier gameplay (less grinding) Just try it out (I think there is a free trial on the fileplanet website that you can download) and make your own opinion of the game. I will be playing this game forever because it is the best star wars game around and it gets better with every expansion pack !
Take this review for what it is worth... One persons opinion.

Look, I am not going to argue the nay sayers or come here and jump on the pro SWG bandwagon either. What I will do is give a review that sees both sides of the argument. On the one hand I can understand why the disgruntled are so upset. You buy the game on release, pay the monthly charge, you play it, you build your character, spend thousands of hours leveling up and what do you get? A bunch of patches and upgrades that reduce the classes you are used to and not only that, but level you down about 40 levels. Can no one see the frustration there? I can and it sucks that they did that.
Now, I was fortunate enough not to be around for the pre-c.u. or the pre-NGE days and therefore coming into the game for the very first time, I love it and I have a blast playing it. I enjoy working up my levels to gain more weapons and moves. I love being a part of a group roaming from planet to planet in search of... well... whatever you want. The player driven economy is awsome, the graphics are great and the "do what you want when you want" feel is refreshing coming from strictly FPS games that limit you to a small map with 30 other players just blasting the hell out of each other for an hour.
SWG gives you the experience of living in a Galaxy and going about your business doing your own thing while thousands of other players around you do the same. Or you can team up for missions, talk or hang out. You can DO WHATEVER YOU WANT. I have played this game for a week now and have not seen many bugs yet but that is not to say that they are not there, I just haven't seen them.
So, in conclusion, buy it. What have you got to lose? It is 19.99 for the game and 14.95 a month to play. If within that month you don't like it... well... You are only out about 35 bucks. Not a huge loss from the bank for some enjoyment.
