Remember this is a monthly subscription game. And here is a recent forum post by one of the designers taking jabs at the community:
<
>Roughly 80% of the people who play SWG never read these boards. We know this from our own internal metrics and it poses an interesting question. Are we talking to people who play the game or posters who play the boards?
I don't mean to imply that the people who post here don't play the game. Far from it. There are thousands of well-constructed, thoughtful, and insightful posts from people who obviously know the game very well. Just read a few lines of these gems and you'll realize that, first and foremost, these people care about the game. Their focus is the game. I think the lion's share of the profession feedback in the last couple publishes is a fantastic example of these players who post.
But, at the same time, these boards are constantly cluttered by the reverse. Posters who play. They use these forums to lash out at others, criticize wantonly, and generally feed their own egos. They regularly attack devs and moderators, clinging to past wrongs and imagined slights. They focus on themselves instead of the game. To them, the boards are the real game.
As devs, we aren't here to play the board game. We're here to play, and to make, SWG.
The upcoming chapters will see the remainder of the profession expertise systems implemented. We have a lot of work to do and the feedback from players who post is going to be invaluable. You aren't going to like every decision we make and we understand that. We have a limited resources and time to accomplish all that needs to be done. But, as I've said before, we will be here (on the boards) and we will be listening. If you're up for a focused discussion of ideas, we welcome you and you can bet you'll have our attention.
If, however, you feel the need to throw another stone, indulge a rant, whine, pick apart another poster, argue a dead point, rules lawyer, quote ancient history, or engage in any of the other classic board game moves, don't expect us to pay attention. We have better things to do.
We have some SWG to make.>>
So you may want to reconsider whther or not this is the type of customer service you want to deal with on a monthly basis
Decide for youself

Star Wars Galaxies
Ever since i was the age of 3, I've wanted to live in the Star Wars galaxy, even now at ten times that i still occasionally dream of flying my own Xwing. So when i found out Star Wars Galaxies was being developed, that's all i needed. By the time the game released i was deep into the Dev forums talking design and debates with various other Community members. Till that day that i first stepped in Star Wars.
Since then, its had its ups and down. I've had pure Star Wars moments, like defending a little known city of Dearic from Imperials, I've flown X-Wings to take down a Star Destroyer, I've battle for planets, or fought to protect my home city. I gone though foggy corridors on the Avatar station, and I've had epic confrontations with an army of battle droids.
I was in Star Wars, as i dreamed about when i was a kid, and i still am.
While i evolved in SWG, so did the game. We went from a game where you had to run every where to vehicles with multiple-passagers. Ive visited Tatoonie, and the forest moon of Endor. I've set foot on the wookiee's homeworld and braved the heat of Mustafar.
So what does this mean to someone looking to join the galaxy. Its Star Wars, and with the new NGE, even more so. From the start you feel like you've entered your own Star Wars story. Firefights, escaping an exploding space station, the well known sound of a certain golden droid. Pure Star Wars, its moments like that (and others I've briefly mentioned) that make the game enjoyable.
My guildmate said it best, so I'm going to quote him
--------------
-We have character models that allow us to make our avatars skinny or fat. Tall or short. We have some very good control over the facial customization. We can re-model ourselves with player assistance any time we like.
-We have player created clothing that is pretty good in terms of customization. We pick colors. We can layer them. We can mix armor and clothing. Cripes, we can even color armor.
-We have many player controlled structures that we can place in the environment to create player cities, if the terrain allows.
-We can freely decorate these houses up to their storage limits with nearly every item in the game save the very rare few that can only be in your top inventory or the bank. And these items can be moved in 3 dimensional space for stunning and creative decorations.
-Your spaceships can be decorated as well!
-Crafting of items follow an intricate but understandable system that uses an interconnected system of resources, subcomponents, and manufactured subcomponents. The hunting for resources with the right statistics and then mining them was sometimes better excitement than fighting for the crafter.
-The game elements like speeder bikes and starships are complete and total items of immersion, not to mention functional and fun. Remember your first ride on a swoop after having to run from Dearic to Tsarin time after time after time? Oh yeah. And you can customize those using paint kits too. Just like your droids. And your starships.
This list can go on and on. The point is that the SWG engine is top notch. Even after years of it being in service, the graphics are awesome and there are no other games out there that offer anywhere near the complete level of character customization and interface options.
---------------
That and so much more.
Veteran players are understandably upset, the game they knew was changed. But that doesn't mean the game isn't fun or enjoyable to new players (and in some cases older ones).
Don't let anyone else tell you what to think, try it for yourself.

Alrighty, for those of you who just want a quick summary, Star Wars Galaxies is far from perfect, but is nevertheless well worth my $15 a month for the fun, the friendships I've forged and the Star Wars experience I get for my money.
With that in mind, you can try the game for free (10 day trial, check out the game's website), so you might as well give it a go if you're uncertain about purchasing.
For those of you who would like a little detail, read on.
First let me give you a little background on myself so you can place my view in the correct context:
- I've been playing Star Wars Galaxies since the game's launch;
- For the past twelve months or so I've been part of SOE's correspondent program (now Community Leader program);
-I'm a graduate of BSc (hons) Computer and Video Games, for which in my final year (as well as making a game) I wrote my dissertation on 'Methods used by massively multiplayer online (MMO) game developers to manage their player communities', of which some of the research was based on SOE's SWG team's methods.
Well then, now that's out of the way, what is it about the game that has kept me around for so long? Until recently there have been three main things, now there's four (gasp! The game's improved for me?! But what about all these naysayers?.. well, read on).
1. Space flight/combat (now included with the main game/starter kit I believe) is awesome. As a veteran of all the Xwing series (check out Lucas Arts' site if you're not sure what I mean), I'm counting Star Wars Galaxies amongst some of the most fun I've had in a space sim, both vs. AI and vs. other players... There's also the player on board (POB) ships where a group of players can crew a light freighter sized vessel (the scene from A New Hope where Han and Luke are in the Falcon's gunner seats? yep, you get to do that while your friends pilot and maintain/fix the ship).
2. The friends I've made and the guild/player association I helped found. While most won't do the latter, everyone who plays an MMO and enjoys it will 99% of the time do so with a core group of friends, SWG is no different!
3. Star Wars.. this is it. Where else am I going to find it? From the planets where the movies took place, the space around them (nothing like a good dog fight :) ), to the main characters from the films and the expanded universe (Corran Horn and Tallon Karrde say hello :P.. Vader was unavailable for comment :|)
Those are the main three that have kept me here so far. The fourth? Simply put: combat.
The new system may have its haters, but man do I like it. Sure, there are (as I write this anyways) some bugs and balance issues that're being worked on, but I finally feel like I'm running around shooting a blaster at someone (or thing, as it can be in Star Wars)!
While it's not anywhere near the level of a first person shooter in terms of the ability that's required to aim and react, it still manages to feel like you're the one doing the shooting.
While I love RPG games, I often find stereotypical MMO combat lacking, in some cases down right dull and boring; SWG's new combat system has broken from the mould and is offering something that's far more engaging and fun to play. Many players who like the former combat system seemingly don't like this type of gameplay, which is unfortunate, especially when some of the previous system remains in the form of special moves/abilities you can pull off in the midst of combat (it's not all about shooting, occasionally you have to think as well).
You may have heard about low quality communication from the SWG development team (I know, I wrote several thousand words about it :P). I will agree that this was the case in the past, however, recently the person in charge of their community relations was sacked; her superior and those working under her have stepped up with the new changes and are actually answering questions and communicating far more with the game's community in what seems to be an earnest professional attempt to meet the player base's issues and concerns with the game.
I don't know if this is as a direct result of the sacking, or a change in policy from their management, but regardless, it seems to have done the trick.
Fixes are also coming faster than they previously did (indeed a schedule of what's going to be coming out has been shown and the fixes are in days and weeks rather than "some months from now"), likely due to both the greatly reduced professions available in the game and what seems to be a change in focus of the development team.
"Eh? Greatly reduced?" you say? Yes, the professions now are Bounty Hunter, Commando, Entertainer, Jedi, Medic, Officer, Smuggler, Spy and Trader. These all fulfil roles you see in the movies. While I liked the diversity of the previous system, it always got to me that many of the professions were either just not found in the Star Wars movies or were a re-hash of something already in the game. Now everything worth while (bar one) has been condensed into these 9 classes.
The one I mention is that of creature handler, which may not sound Star Warsy, but when you think of the amount of animals used in the movies to carry people or fight, it's a needed job. We're told this will be returning to the game in one form or another though, so fingers crossed.
There's much, much more that I could cover (not all of it good), but I think you can work the rest out for yourself by trying the darn thing already (it's free.. seriously, c'mon :P), which I think is well worth your time; at least, it's worth mine.
New Changes Mean more Fun

The SWG of today is in no way the SWG I purchased two years ago. This latest version is far superior. There was a drastic change with the implementation of the New Game Experience. While it is early for these changes, as a player from the Beta period I think these changes were warranted. Going from 32 professions to 9 iconic professions should mean improved changes to the professions. More time for the devs to spend on content and improving the professions as game play dictates. Leveling up early in game is enjoyable through the quests and when you hit mid range then there are other static quests to perfrom by yourself or with a group. The higher levels only seem to be reachable on Mustafar, hopefully more quests on different worlds will be created.
This is still a social game where it is easy to RP with others. When I sit in front of the computer it is fun and it does not feel like work (as it has with other games). If you are a power player who wants to level quickly and not enjoy the scenes around you this my not be the game for you. If you enjoy exploring and playing a game that is enjoyable then SWG is your game.
If I had the choice again I would buy the game again.
Good Game, Great Graphics.

This game has a lot of great features...a diverse first person shooter with a lot of exploration and even some manufacturing thrown into the mix. If I had a complaint it would be that you have to do a lot of killing to work your way up the rankings. The killing is a little arcade style. At least it seems that way because of the quantity of killing you have to do. I really liked the flying of space ships and the great looking graphics. I also really enjoyed making and furnishing my own house.
Good game at it's core.

There have been a lot of changes to this game sincve it first came out, but the newest version is unique in the MMORPG world. It's fast combat is more like a first person shooter, but with the leveling up, questing, and gathering trinkets for your in game house as a more standard MMORPG has.
Making your home in the starwars universe is as much fun as it sounds, and anything you buy/loot can be placed in your home as a trophy of the kill, or simple decoration.
The free in-game gift that comes with this particular version is very nice for getting home after questing in far off places. it's an instant shuttle ride to the starport of your choice on the planet you're on. (doesnt work on expansion worlds)
I should warn new players though, your xp grind will be smooth until about lvl 30-40, but then it slows to a stop. They have taken away all the good repeatable xp quests and have given nothing in return. It will take you weeks and probably months, even grinding 6 hours a night, to get to level 90 (the max level).
That said, you also get ground xp in space, and the space game is a total blast. If you enjoyed the x-wing vs tie series, you'll be right at home but with more customization than ever. There are 3 factions for space flight, imperial, rebel, and neutral. And there are 3 different squadrons in each faction providing different story lines. Some squads are harder than others.
Communities in the game are different on each server, and it would be a good idea to check out the different server forum boards to find a community that would fit you best. some have more european players, others more roleplay, while others are more crowded with inflated economies.
The game is constantly changing and they are adjusting each class in turn. Jedi just had a fix, and officers are next. These fixes are taking too long and won't be finished well into 2007. but there is still plenty to keep new players busy till then.
Ithorians, Wookiees, Trandoshans, Zabraks, Mon Calamari all have racial restrictions, Ithorians and Wookiee restrictions are the worst. You will not be able to wear the fun storm trooper armor or most other armor types if you choose either of these 2 classes. It is best, if you are interested on having the best stats, to be human.
superb!

i work in game stores in the uk and this was just sent to my store ready for launch so i decided to try it out. and it is excellent! its a 1 player version of the mmo star wars galaxies! i dont play the online version but i did try it out for a month with a 14 day free trial about a year ago. this starter kit is the same as the online one but 10 times better graphics and lots more npcs to make up all the missing players. there are some npcs that sell items that in the mmo version can only be created by other palyers. also you get 5 charecters to play so you can creat items for yourslef if you wish and you get to try out most of the professions. the other cool new feature is the henchmen system, the same as in guild wars, you can hire people from cantinas to form a npc group to help you with difficult missions. i recomend this to all who love swg and role play!

The NGE for me is what the game should have been in 2003.

The NGE in my opinion is what the game should have been back in 2003. The only way to advance your toon was to grind, grind, grind, grind. Combat was slow. There were too many professions. The only fun I had was playing with my friends and meeting new people. As a diehard Star Wars Fan I played the game in beta and continue to play it today. I play a Spy in the NGE and I find it quite enjoyable. Combat is faster and I enjoy doing the Quests and yes the game does seem more "Star Warsy".
SOE should not have forced the NGE onto everybody. They should have stopped development on the PRE-NGE but keep the servers going. They should have had separate NGE servers and offerd to tranfers toons over to the new servers if a customer desired so. There are Vets who do enjoy the complex richness of PRE-NGE Star Wars Galaxies. Also, whoever handled the release of the NGE should be fired. I was poorly done.
But back to the game. Faster, less grind and more "Star Warsy" equals fun. The game does not deserve 5 Stars nor does it deserve 1 Star. Just tryout the game via the 10 day trial and decide for yourself.

Ok first off if your new to the game you will love it, most of the bad reviews come from very upset Vets due to the drastic (but better) changes to the game. While I understand why they may be upset I don't agree and I've been in game since launch. This game like most MMOs has its good points and its bad points but bottom line is its fun.
There is no other game online that gives you the freedom to do and be what you want in a sci-fi environment. Games like Chaos on Line and EveOn line don't even come close to what you can do in Star Wars. You can build, fly and master the art of real time combat in space and be a Rebel, Imperial or Neutral pilot. It's a long hard grind but fun none the less.
As for Planetside there are now 9 iconic professions (we had 32 but balancing a game like that was a bitch for SOE so they cut it down). The new real time "twitch" based ground combat is also a lot of fun and character creation is 2nd to none, crafting needs to be reworked after the new changes but you can make almost anything in game, own a home, start a guild, the list goes on. Missions and quests could be better but SOE is making improvements even as I write this review.
The game has undergone a radical change in the last 4 weeks and many people are upset about it but the fact is SOE is finally moving the game in the right direction. It's more fun, more balanced and over time can grow to be one of the best online game out there. It would have been nice if they did this before the game went live (2yrs ago) but at least it's happening now.
If you want to be your own person and do anything in a Star Wars Universe then you will enjoy galaxies. Again don't let people who are angry with SOE for changing the game keep you from buying it as most are just pissed off former Jedi who cant OWN everything in the galaxy anymore or sell their jedi toon on ebay for $800 dollars.
Bottom line if you want to be a fairy or elf and use your long sword then this is not the game for you. But if all you need is a good blaster by your side then come join Star Wars Galaxies.
