Of all the initial launch titles, this is the best game by far. In my opinion, it's still the best DS game today. The only other DS game that comes close is WarioWare: Touched! Super Mario 64 DS is just as immersive as the original N64 version, possibly even moreso because of the extra 30 stars. When you just have a few minutes, you can play mini-games via the "rec-room" section of the game. The controls are very intuitive, and the graphics are even a little nicer than the N64 version. All in all, if you have a DS, this is the game to get.

Fred's Review:
4/5 stars

Based on the Super Mario 64 for N64, this is a game that you have to get for the DS.
This is about the same as the original except the DS version has slick graphics, smooth gameplay, more levels and thirty more stars, multiple characters, and special abilities for each player so you have to be different ones. This game will have you playing for a long time, even longer than WarioWare:Touched! 150 stars means that even after you beat the final boss you still have a long way to go. Mario fans will be surprised to hear about the new and easier wall jumping system. The story has changed a little too. Camera guy gets suspicous after Mario,Luigi, and Wario(Don't know why he's there.) don't come out of Peach's castle. Yoshi decides to check it out. After advancing through some levels you unlock characters in their own special level with their own special boss. Wario's boss is probably the hardest boss in the game for people with bad timing, other people will find him easy. After collecting enough stars using your characters you can finally fight Bowser(The Final Form) and save Princess Peach.

Also when you are progressing through your adventure you have to fight Bowser(Weaker versions) to access to new areas and floors.

nostalgia and improvements

This first thing that you'll notice about M64DS, is that the graphics are amazingly close to what we saw when the 64 first delivered this title. And the best part is that that's not the only surprise! For starters, gamers who were dissapointed by Yoshis "hi look at my shiny 3d model" bit in the first outing of this title are at last satisfied by the ability to play the green giggle machine in full 3D, with of course his famous tongue and egg throwing abilities.
The game also brings in Wario and Luigi, and cleverly redistributes the function of Marios hats from the first M64 into these two characters, Wario becoming metal and Luigi becoming invisible when collecting the Power Flower. Mario retains the flight cap.
The game also offers some new levels and challenges tailored to the new heores, such as the first bob-omb fight, in which Yoshis eat and spit ability must be used to defeat the big bob-omb.
All in all, the game is well executed, it retains all of the charms and excellent gameplay that first captured the hearts of gamers who were at the time tentatively stepping into the realm of 3D platforming, and manages to also innovate in its own right, giving us the chance to play in 3D characters we have always wanted to play with, and provicing a new slew of puzzles and challenges to solve.
A multiplayer is also integrated here, and provides of rmanic fun. The mini games are similar to those seen in the New Super Mario Bros. but offer a greater variety, and also the clever tactic of chasing down those nimble rabbits in order to unlock new games.
Take it from me, a trans-atlantic flight was made much easier on me thanks to this free spirited retro classic.

Brings back fond memories

My brother bought the original Super Mario 64 for the N64 nearly ten years ago and the both of us played the heck out of it. It' one of the best platform games out there, including both 2D and 3D. As for this port, for the most part it's a faithful translation of the original while at the same time expanding it. Not only do we have the original game here, but Nintendo decided to expand it by adding thirty more stars for gamers to collect (150 over the original 120). Also, there is more secret levels in the game and now you can play not only as Mario, but as Luigi, Wario, and Yoshi. Finally, there is now including many mini-games using the touchscreen which are highly addictive. Graphic wise, its better than the original. Control wise on the other hand isn't quite as good as the original. The thing isn't so much the game's fault as it is the lack of an analogue stick on the DS. For the most part it isn't too bad, but can be somewhat frustrating, especially in the boss battles. Also, you now have to press a button to run, unlike the original where you automatically ran as gained speed using the analogue stick. These are just small complaints and shouldn't stop gamers to pick this excellent game up, rather they never played the original or are veterans.

Just like old times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Super mario ds, is just like the old nintendo version, but even better! I myself never had a nintendo 64, but when the ds came out I had to get one. One of my first games was this one, and it's definately worth the cost. It's fun and challenging at the same time, and even if you beat the game (good luck) there is still so much to do in the game. The mini games in it are ok. My favorite would have to be the luigi casino games. Buy this game! If your'e a mario fan, you'll love this.

64 version is way better

Super Mario 64 was a great game. Mario 64 DS is way diffrent. I love the fact that you can be Luigi, Yoshi, and Wario but the controls are very confusing to me. With the 64 you get the control stick and B and A plus the c buttons to look around. on the DS you only get 4 buttons plus directional buttons. It was confusing to me. But I loved the graphics. DS is the wave of the future. but for me I'll stick to my GBA SP.

Love the mini-games

I bought this game with the Nintendo DS system, and surprisingly, it is a very fine game.
The main game is somewhat challenging (at least for me). Sometimes I get frustrated because I'm dying four times in a row and losing all my lives. The control is definitely a problem, very often the character just doesn't seem to go where you want it to go. However, excluding the control issue, the main game itself is fun and worth playing over and over again.
Now I want to focus on the mini games since other reviews don't seem to concern about them. Honestly, the mini games rule. There were times where I spent hours and hours just playing the mini games. They are easy to pick up but hard to master. I haven't unlocked all the mini games, yet there seems to be a total of 28 of them. In my opinion, these mini games alone could make another game. They kind of feel like games in mario party, except they make you think. I wonder why the multi-player mode cannot play the mini games since that would be a great party for the players.
In conclusion, this is a must have for any DS owner unless you detest Mario brothers (then I don't see any reason why you should buy a DS)

Great game, bad controls

As far as fun, addictin, and a great ressurection of an old N64 game, this game is simply amazing! It has mini-games (Best mini-games Nintendo has ever made!!!), some new levels, and you can play as Wario, Yoshi, Mario, and Luigi. The learning curve however, does total up to about an hour; it never explains the controls; ever! This is a struggle, since at the very begining you are alerted (As Yoshi) That the other three Mario friends have gone missing. As you eagerly begin your adventure into the castle you recieve more bad news... a rabbit has stolen the keys to the castle, so now you must go on a (difficult) cat and mouse chase, not knowing the controls (or that you must use your tounge action to make him surender) (don't ask). If you want to ever relive the chase (yay!) Nintendo always leaves some bunnies that have mini-game keys in them. Once your past the learning curve however, this game goes back to fairly positive, (other then the underwater levels, another learning curve on how to swim). I would like to point out now, if your the type of person (like me) who simply loves when all the controls on a game are used by only the stylus, you'll be disappointed. If your left handed you clearly have an advantage with the controls, of course, if you don't use the stylus at all, the controls are fine.

However,

In some levels your required to run instantly, creep slowly, or walk with presice movements. Unfortunately, Running cammands don't start instantly, it is very difficult to creep, and precise movements are half-impossable running, walking, or creeping!

Now onto multiplayer:

(I have yet to find a parter to actially try multiplayer, but the game lets you play multi by yourself!) It seems like a great idea, and really seems like fun, yet thats all I can say, as I have yet to find a parter to actially try multi.

Love The Mini Games

I have a hard time controling Yoshi in the regular part of the game. I have not gotten very far there. So I would give that part a less than stellar rating. Maybe 2 stars. It is the mini games that make this cartridge worth the money. You have several mini games from match and a majong like game to a game where you have to keep mario from falling.
