Super Mario 64 was one of the few really good games for the N64. Now, the fact that you can take it on the go is great. For people who have purchased a DS and have yet to play this game, this would be probably the best bet for your DS at this time.
Though I would caution someone who has played the 64 version a number of times. I found myself whipping through the game in a few days. Thats not to say its not long. It will take some time if it's your first time. There is 30 additional stars to find, and alsothrought the game there are rabbits you find that unlock a number of mini-games for each character. While these games are pretty fun at the beginning, just because of the technology with the touch screen, they tend to all become old pretty quick.
So, at this point in time, this is one of the best DS games to get. And, if you have never played MArio 64 before this should be your first purchase for your DS.

ok i actually own this game for my DS and it is and O.K. game the mini game feature is fully opperational with the touch-screen and i must say they are pretty awesome. the only problems i have about the mini-games is that the ones that you start out with arent the most fun but you earn by catching bunnies the really fun ones! so dont loose hope :D. the adventure mode (1 player) is just like the origanal for the N64 eccept you play as 4 characters. the only thing i dislike about it is that you dont start out with Super Mario and you start out with Yoshi. but it is still fun. i would rate it a 4.5 but you cant do .5's just to let you know. the game graphics are also O.k. i mean there is better out there for the DS but HEY! its Mario it is supposed to be cartoony! so i enjoy the mini-games, graphics, and fun and affordable! i love Supper Mario 64 DS.

Fun fun fun!

My son got this for his brand-new DS Lite and has consistently played this game more than the others he got. The Mario franchise has always been high-quality, and this is no exception!

Ruined by lack of analog control

I have been playing Mario 64 DS for a few weeks now. I have played it long enough to now write about the controls with the knowledge that they will not get any more comfortable with extended play.

With that said, I can say with confidence that the engineers who designed this handheld have doomed it to an early demise due to unbelievably leaving out analog control. It is amazing that they would take the time to create a system capable of displaying beautiful and fluid 3D graphics (Mario 64 is amazing looking) but then utilize a control scheme last used on the SNES which specialized in 2D scrollers. Just think of 3rd person 3D games you play on your home console..do you ever use the control pad to control the character or the analog stick? I will bet you use the analog stick and could not even imagine using the digital pad. The Nintendo DS asks (no make that demands) that we forget all the advances in 3D gaming and go back to the bad old days of digital control. The "virtual" analog control offered by the touch screen is completely ineffective and amazing frustrating. This system badly needed an analog control stick (like the PSP has) even more that it needed a gimmicky touch screen. Basically the DS will be relegated to mini game type products and an occasional First Person Shooter (which stylus control could be ok), but any hopes of 3D adventure games is totally ruined.

In closing, I compare Mario DS to an amazing looking Thanksgiving Turkey that is made of plastic. It wonderful to look at, but you cannot actually enjoy eating it.

Shame on Nintendo for overlooking analog control. The saddest thing is that they will probably have to scrap the DS and come out with another handheld that has an analog stick. effectively screwing all of us who bought this flawed product.

Get a kick out of this!!!!

I used to have a Nintendo 64 and super Mario 64 was my first game. I enjoyed the game so much that when I was getting frustrated (keep in mind I was only 5...) I would dress up as Mario and create my own adventures..... for the mustache? I used make-up and drew a mustache on my face! ha ha ha!! I would contently say "it's me, Mario!!" and I would drive my sister nuts. My mom liked it, why? That still remains a mystery. I would walk proudly in the stores with my mom with my Mario costume while all mothers thought I looked cute. When my mom and I went to pick up my sister from her work, my mom sent me in to get my sister... with my Mario costume on!! Now I have the super Mario 64 ds, and with all the characters including Mario, luigi, wario, and Yoshi, it's impossible for me not to like!! I thought five years ago I stopped my "acting career," (I'm 12 now) and now, I've started this mess all over again but with a catch, a twelve year old brute pretending to be Mario... well excuse me, I am not Mario now... "it's me, luigi!".......here I go again..

I think I'm going to love this game

Like many others, I doubted this game would be quite as good as
the original Super Mario 64 when I first bought it. Not only is it as good as the original, it is WAY BETTER! Enhanced gameplay, including ability to play as Yoshi, Luigi, and Wario along with Mario (each character has different abilities), new courses, 30 more Power Stars (150 total), and the dual-screen gameplay along with ability to touch. And I'm not even done yet! You can unlock 40 mini-games, all of which greatly demonstrate the touch-screen gameplay. Plus, wirelessly connect with up to 4 other DS's to have vs. battles (which you only need ONE cartridge for). Even if you have played the N64 version and think you can beat this quickly, guess again. I've played the original and I still get frustrated trying to beat some of the new parts of the game, and even some old parts. And I love having a course map on the touch screen, making it very easy to navigate. And if you are shaky with having to operate the touch-screen, don't worry, because it's not necessary at all. Cons? I can't even think of one. If you have a DS and you like Mario, or even if you don't like Mario, this is a must-have. If you can't afford it, steal it, becuase it is just that good. The best hand-held game I've ever played by far.

To be fair, let me first say this game looks amazing, even better than it did on the Nintendo 64.

Now, the other reviews are more than covering the good points, but let me cover the bad, so that you have the full story before you buy...

If you are expecting a new Mario Adventure, DONT BUY THIS GAME. This game is essentially the same Nintendo 64 game. They have added a few new things here and there, so it is a bit different, but overall it's the same game.

Now for the worst part...this game is hard to play...very hard.
On the 64 you had an analog stick to move your character around. On the DS version you HAVE to use the touchpad. You have no other option. They give you 3 options for controls but all 3 force you to move your character using the touchpad. Based on the positon of the touchpad, it essentially takes one of your hands away, leaving you to hold the DS and control the buttons with the other...not an easy thing to do. On the 64 game, moving the character without falling off of objects was often the toughest part of the game. Now on the DS, it's even worse.

The demo of Metroid Prime Hunters that came with the DS uses the touchpad brilliantly, as an aiming device for your weapon. This prooves the touchpad is a good thing and should be used. Mario DS fails. Having played the 64 game, I was disappointed to find it the same on the DS. I was completely turned off from the DS version because of the difficulty using the touchpad. If you have never played the 64 version, this game might be worth a look. If you have, expect it to be a strange and tough transistion.
