Undoubtedly one of the best game ports I've played thus far. I have been an avid fan of Mario 64 since it's release on the N64 and this game did not disappoint.
When I first booted the game I was expecting it just to be a miniaturized version of the game I loved, but it is so much more than that. Building off of the original SM64, Nintendo has only improved this wonderful game. A few new levels have been added, that are integrated so well that you'd never notice them as new levels unless you'd played the original. There are also 30 more stars to top off the original 120 to now 150, adding hours more into the gameplay.
I've heard a few complaints about the textures being pixelated, especially when close to an object, but one cannot deny that they are starkly better than it's original counterpart. Higher polygon models and higher detail in the textures really adds to the experience.
Another factor that has been improved from the original is the sound. Gorgeous stereo sound really shows off the improved version of the original soundtrack and rerecorded dialogue (such as Toadstool's letters and character phrases). Sounds gorgeous with the DS's speakers, but plug in a good set of headphones and you'll be totally immersed in the experience of the game.
Sadly, gameplay can be a little awkward at times with the touch screen - you may find yourself running in the wrong direction or falling off a cliff before you've gotten used to it (quite frustrating.) But after you HAVE gotten used to it, it's easy to pull off and play the game. Personally though, I still use the Directional Pad to control my character, and it works perfectly fine for someone who doesn't have the wrist-strap 'stylus' for thumb play (works perfectly, even with the tetchy diagonals of a DS Lite d-pad).
The lasting appeal is great though...for the casual gamer, a delightful single player mode and equally enjoyable minigames make for a grand experience. For a serious player though, collecting every single star and unlocking every minigame will add hours to the game and much more fun. There are a few awesome minigames when you first start, but many more to unlock and enjoy. The multiplayer mode, while the timer can be irritating, is still fun, especially since only one cart is needed.
In short:
- Tons of new challenges add hours to gameplay
- Many awesome minigames to unlock will keep the player entertained
- A decent multiplayer is good for a little fun with the friends, and only requires one cart
- High replayability keeps you coming back for more
I give it a 9.0/10

Super Mario DS is one of the most classic games that has made a triumphant return on the DS. I spent hours trying to get 80 stars, solving puzzles and trying to get all the charaters. I was so pleased with the gameplay and storyline, my siblings want to play this game! If you want something that is challenging, classic and overall fun, I am telling you now: GET THIS GAME!!
Pretty fun but controls are a bit harder

This game is exactly like the 64 version except you can switch characters between Yoshi, Mario, Luigi, and Wario. I thought the controls were kind of hard with the touch screen control option, so I switched to the buttons. Same levels, same power ups, (except Mario can't turn into metal, Wario does that instead) and same bosses. It was easier to get around the place because there is a map on the bottom screen. Vs. mode is trying to get the stars before your opponents and you must attack them to steal the star.

I'm new to the whole Nintendo DS and Mario game scene. I have a GBA but was never really good at most of the games.
The one problem I've been having and the reason I entered 4 stars for how much fun it is....was because of trying to use the stylus for moving the characters around. I know you don't "have" to use it but I did try and it just didn't work so well for me, granted in some of the sections I had a hard time figuring out how to move them at ALL but I'm sure it's just me and I'm not coordinated enough. I've also gotten stuck on a couple areas where I can't figure out how to make it do what I want it to do. I know it says you can 'play as' all of the characters....but I'm still working on that part. I know what I need to do but not how to do it. :)
Otherwise - it's going to keep me occupied for a while.

I remember playing this game on N64 the moment it came out.
Great memories.
Graphics:
8/10
Better than they were 10 years ago.
Still the average DS graphics though.
Sound:
10/10
I love the music. Everything is different.
Controls:
10/10
Stylus or buttons; your choice
Mini-Games:
6/10
75% of them are the same as the New SM Bros
Multiplayer:
1/10
You have to find stars in a short span.
Fun for 5 seconds.
Playability:
Moderate
Once you beat the game, there really isn't anything to do but catch rabbits.
Mini games get boring as well.
Overall:
8.5/10
Great way to relive the past in a vamped up game.
My recommendation:
Buy only one of the Mario games. You'll thank me in the end.

Super Mario 64 DS for the Nintendo DS is a remake of the old N64 Super Mario 64 game with some new changes.
One of the new things is you can control Mario with the touch screen or the control pad. Second, is that you can play as Mario, Luigi, Wario or Yoshi. Third, is you can open up a plethora of great mini games by catching rabbits, some of which are more fun than the main game and give you hours of enjoyment.
The main game is the same as the N64 version, however the graphics and control are a bit better on the DS. This is a great game to have for the DS. Some of the mini games especially show off the power of DS. I recommend this game for your Nintendo DS library, as it gives you your Mario fix until the new Mario Bros. game comes out.
My Review Score for this game is = 8.0
(Score 1 is throw it out, 10 is a must buy)

A lot of the games bore my 11 year old daughter. She loves this one. It's the only game she wanted for Christmas and she plays it all the time. My 11 year old nephew begged his mom for it after he saw it. As for me, the mom, I don't get the whole DS thing :)
Endless fun

Got this as a christmas present and got to play it a while myself. Enjoyable Mario experience as always with any Mario game. Plenty to explore and unlock.
