Not What I Expected

This game isn't terrible, but it's not what I expected it to be. Being an LOTR fan I had to purchse the game. However, most of the gameplay is hacking and slashing, and I expected the LOTR game to be similar to the quest described by J.R.R. Tolkien in his works. In addition the camera angles are poor, which add to the confustion when you're surrounded. Add to that the fact that there are a large number of video clips from the first movie. I don't mind the movie, however there seems to be more movie clips then gameplay, and that can get annoying. I haven't finished the game, but a friend of mine who did said it makes for a very short gameplay. If you want to experience it, then my suggestion is to rent.

Short and shallow.

Well, you fight some stuff, then fight some stuff, then fight some stuff. Doesn't follow the story at all. No puzzles, no adventure, no nothing except combat the whole way through - which is only five hours if you're lucky. Graphically it looks nice - well, except the character models are horrible. This is just an arcade slasher with the Tolkien name on it. No real substance.

The Most Overrated Game of All Time

First off, I'll agree with everyone that the graphics are spectacular, and the movie-to-cg transitions are seamless and stunning. However, graphic zing does not (and never will) a good game make. And the vast majority of reviews I have read (in magazines and online, and here on amazon.com) seem to be focused solely on the astounding animation and voice-work in "The Two Towers." Did anyone play past level 3 before reviewing the game? Because I thought the game was great for the first 3 levels as well. But after that, things quickly degenerate into a repetetive button-mashing muddle. The scenery changes, but the action does not. Oh, you do indeed get to kick ladders over every once in awhile, but then its right back to hitting those buttons as quickly as possible while each level goes on and on and on and on and on. Yes, the book and movie both make it very clear how outnumbered the humans were at Helm's Deep, but that is no reason for each Helm's Deep level to continue on for 30+ minutes with nary a change of scenery. Hint to EA for "The Return of the King": if I can stand in front of a door and kill orcs and Uruk-Hai for 5 minutes, I can do it for 30! This game is not difficult, just mind-numbing (in the worst sense of that term). Rent this game, because the thrill of seeing the beautiful graphics wears out long (long) before the end is in sight.

"The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" based directly on the novel is far superior to this game.

[not as good as i'd hoped]

With all the hype surrounding this game for the last few months , I was expecting a much better efort from EA .Probably my biggest gripe is the overuse of video clips from the movie between levels . Yeah it's cool when it morphs into animation gameplay but it stikes me as being a case of the developers being too lazy to animate sequences and taking the easy way out by just throwing in clips from the movie . The facial animation on the characters looks horrible . The gameplay is slash & hack 101 and it's a VERY short game . If you're looking for something that stays true to Tolkien's work , pick up the Vivendi "Fellowship of the Ring" which was obviously a labor of love by Tolkien Fans .

I bought this game because it's melee fighting, but it is very disappointed.....You should rent it to try out before deciding to buy this game. Yes! I like the story of fantasies and mythical of movies..and in game too, but the game is trying to sell the story not gameplay. Heck! One thing about this game is it made me feel powerless, trapped, and weak....It's a game for crying out loud and it should be fun. The 3 characters are weak, the weapons are weak, the weapon and stat upgrade is cheasy, the maps are short and crampy. Here you have the cut scenes sugesting you will fight 100 of 1000 orcs but how you gonna fight them with a lil' punny sword and bow and the front lawn. They should never put real characters and cut scenes from the movies into games, like we'd not seen enough of them in movies and seeing them in games is boring because like cut & paste, another weak point is showing you how the game is made and the interview of the charaters of what they think of the game. Graphic in the game is not up to standard, the map look & feel like a little backyard......how is that for a battle field with thousands of troops and ememies huh??? The worse piont is this game is not fun to play and it has negaitve feel to it. Good thing I did trade it in while it still worth something. Oh yeah! Another thing is you have to remember to hit triangle X X Triangle, and other combinations to the special combos which I found wasting time to learn because they do not having effects fight too many enemies surrounding so it's useless. I don't think this game having any replay factor in it which a good game can be play over and over and feeling good playing it...game like Fifa 2003 or Danasty Warriors 3....ect. Even if I likee the movies so much I hate this game that much because I'm not playing the movies. Maybe this game is the best while there's nothing to play out there but this is the 21 century.....Did someone loose track of time? The music is awsome though because it is cut & paste directly from the movie.

If you're looking for something that'll last a while...

Then don't get this game. It lasts about thirty minutes on one character, and who wants to go back with a different character with basically the same abilities and do the same thing over? If you're a LOTR fanboy then go ahead, but only if you're seriously obsessed with LOTR. It lasted about 10 minutes and realizing I was going to beat it in about 20 more minutes I turned off the system and haven't touched it since.

Not for Kids

If you want your kid to learn the "how-to's" when it comes to hacking an orc into 1000 pieces, then this is the game for you.
For kids? The hell you say.
Do your kids spend all day beating the [lights] out of each other?
Well, buy this game and see what happens. Did you actually watch the movie, or were you so busy stuffing your face with popcorn and Milk Duds, that you failed to notice that the whole movie centers around characters who cut each other's heads off and then speak in some weird tongue.
