TTT game review

In anticipation of the Two Towers movie I bought the game. It is based on the first two movies, the graphics, animations and music are very detailed and true to the movies. I don't play many games through to the end, but this game I'll play through several times. The in-game movies are actually fun and informative, unlike most in-game movies that you just skip.
If there is one thing missing from this game, it is a 2 player version, there is no reason this couldn't be a two player game, most of the time other characters are running along side you fighting, hopefully they will add this feature for 'return of the king' game :)
bottom line... great game, great quality, well worth owning.

Screwy portrayal of the movie

EA hit a chord in the action genre with, "American McGee's, Alice," so naturally, most of the PS2 fanbase was excited to learn of a LOTR: Two Towers game in production. At first glance, The Two Towers has most of the same characteristics of the Dynasty Warriors series. Of course, many people would be excited to hear that. However, many of the differences in this melee-stlye combat game from other kin contribute to its detriments.

The Two Towers involves the player choosing Aragorn, Legolas, or Gimli to fight for the Free Peoples of Middle-Earth. As exciting as that sounds, you are automatically dissapointed as you quickly find out that you have to sit through almost the entire introduction that is included in the movie, The Fellowship of the Ring. EVERY time you start a new game, OR just to load the old one you've been playing. You can't skip it, and why the hell NOT? Because EA cleverly integrated the movie scene with The Last Alliance of Men and Elves battle of gameplay. You are thrown into the game with no way of knowing exactly what to do, or how to do it.In fact, you have very little knowledge of any special moves or combos you can pull off, until some Orc beats the hell out of you and the console so belated, decides to make you aware of a button you should have pressed.

But, as soon as you get a combo with points you gain from the last level, a crushing realization sweeps over you that there's not much more to it than that. Hardly ANY levels include anything more intelligent or strategic than button mashing and beating the hell out of 200 Orcs just like you did last level. It really gets old fast.

At least in similar games like Dynasty Warriors, certain startegies and other abilites had to be utilized to win levels. In The Two Towers, you can actually sit there and rely on your other teammates to kick ...every enemy while you watch pleasantly. There's not much more to it than that.

Now, this game isn't HORRIBLE, to an extent, it's just not a groundbreaking game, or is it anything innovative. We've seen this before, the only difference is of course, the fact that EA slaps LOTR characters in there, and we're attracted to it. I would under no circumstances buy this game in first glance. In fact, even renting it is a stretch. There's simply no justification of calling this game any better than, say, a less than admiral game like The Bouncer, and that's saying something.

The Two Towers lacks innovation, learning curve, and most of all, perhaps the most important aspect of any video game, fun factor. A word of warning to all of the LOTR nuts out there like me.

My very first game review....

...and I'm glad it's for TTT! I first played this game a couple of years ago, and loved it. Ppl say it's better to play as Aragorn but in my opinon Legolas is and always will be better. I really like how you get warned about something...I remember I was in Balin's tomb and I heard Frodo shout out "Legolas!" and I woke up and saw 20 goblins coming towards me! Another thing I liked is when I shot Gimli...Don't worry he was okay, he just had an arrow sticking out of his back (LOL). Anyhoo, this game has terrific graphics and stupendous voiceovers and out of sight music (duh, I knew that!) Buy this game and you won't forget it!

Wow!

This game rocks. I started playing it, spent pretty much an entire weekend in front of the TV. Once you start, it's impossible to put down the controller. I have been in search of a good fantasy game for PS2 for a while (I have been playing games like Devil May Cry and Final Fantasy) and this one is way, way, way better than all of them. It doesn't really follow the movie plot. If you haven't seen the movie or read the books, it would make no sense. Play as Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli (and a secret character once you beat the game). Unlock psecial moves and upgrades, fight against cave trolls, ring wraiths, goblins, orcs, etc. The overall plot is kind of short, but you can play through it with four different characters, and even after you beat it you just want to start over again! Don't worry if it's hard at first, you get good quickly

best game ever!!

I am the BIGGEST lotr freek! I have seen the movie 25 times in theaters and I got the DVD the day it came out. Anyway, I can't wait until the game comes out Nov. 8. The graphics look amazing and I know it will be the best. You can play as one of the charaters form the Fellowship: Legolas, Aragorm, or Gimili (the comp. will control the other members of the Felloeship). After each mission, you can change your character to another. They each have great moves, weapons, and have their own different skills.
I recommend this to anyone who likes lotr, or just likes swords-play.

Gauntlet for the 21st Century

Playing this game reminded me spending endless hours playing Gauntlet. This game had the pure thrill of hack & slash gaming. You can play through the game as any or all of Aragorn, Gimli, or Legolas, plus a secret character.

The cut scenes from the movie are well done, and work seamlessly in the game. Interestingly, they're sleightly reshuffled to make sense with the game. I like how they put you right in the middle of battle without you even knowing the game had started. Some variations on the gameplay - defending someone, attacking with unexpected weapons, etc. made for an interesting experience, and at times when I was given a new task, I was surprised by it. It really pays to listen to what people are telling you to do!

From the behind the scenes stuff, you learn that the game makers had complete access to the materials used in the movie and that many of the sets are based on the scale models & locations used in the movie. They studied in detail the moves of the various actors and each character does have his own way of moving, different strengths that make replaying different levels with different characters interesting. Many of the scenes and action are taken directly from the movies. I didn't realize this until I saw a scene from the movie that matched exactly what my character was doing in the game.

The music engine also deserves mention. It's dynamic and changes based on what's going on in the game. It intensifies during battle, and quiets down during parts where you're just running around. This has been done in other games, but it's truly seamless here to the point where I'm hardly aware of the music, it adds without being obvious.

The extras are also worthwhile - behind the scenes stuff, interviews with the major actors in the game, etc. (hint: they're the same as the actors in the movie). Plus, once you beat the game, a small scene from The Return of the King!

This game could've benefited only by two things - one, it should've been longer. Two, it should be two player so you can really go at it in true Gauntlet fashion. I finished the whole thing in a matter of days.

Not What I Expected

This game isn't terrible, but it's not what I expected it to be. Being an LOTR fan I had to purchse the game. However, most of the gameplay is hacking and slashing, and I expected the LOTR game to be similar to the quest described by J.R.R. Tolkien in his works. In addition the camera angles are poor, which add to the confustion when you're surrounded. Add to that the fact that there are a large number of video clips from the first movie. I don't mind the movie, however there seems to be more movie clips then gameplay, and that can get annoying. I haven't finished the game, but a friend of mine who did said it makes for a very short gameplay. If you want to experience it, then my suggestion is to rent.

The game overall is fantastic. The graphics and visual effects are outstanding. Going from one level to another is pretty good. The mixing of different scenes from the movie into the game itself is excellent. I would definitely recommend this game to everyone. I rate this game as a definite 5 stars game to have for your stock or collection of other PS2 games that you have.

Hugely surprising.

I picked this game up last week during a particularly boring day, not really expecting much of it (even though i'd read some decent reviews.) To my surprise, the game is actually one of the best film adaptations i have ever played, giving the great action & atmosphere of the films & some damn good playability as well. While it's true that the game isn't too challenging, it is incredibly good fun, & it's nice to see that the developers have actually taken the time to reward people who play through the game with some nice dvd-style bonus material. It was also a surprise to hear the true voices of the cast, which adds a lot to the atmosphere. Recommended for any fans of the movie, & anyone who likes a good action game.
