One of the most original games of all time

First of all, I'd like to say that one of the most important characteristics of a great computer game is having an awesome main character (with some exception, i.e. Battlefield 1942). Max Payne embodies every possible side of being awesome that anyone could ever comprehend.

The plot is as follows: Max Payne is a cop whose wife and baby are murdered by some junkies. In his campaign of violent and ultimately holy justice, Max targets various nemeses, from low-level thugs to mob bosses, finally linking the death of his loved ones to a government figure. Instead of using traditional animation videos in which the computer characters interact to tell the storyline, the plot of Max Payne is told using comic strips in which the voices and background sounds are also heard. I heard that this approach was used because it was a lot more cost-efficient, but instead of simply choosing a cheaper story medium, the writers and designers stumbled onto one of the most brilliant plot presentations of any game ever.

Of course one can't talk about Max Payne without mentioning bullet-time, the slow motion fighting style that was made popular by the Matrix. Though bullet-time is definitely the most dazzling aspect of the gameplay, I find it is also almost necessary to win many fights. The game can be fairly difficult, so being able to have an edge in the shoot-outs is definitely a plus.

Max Payne has got to be one of my all time favorites. For those people who love John Woo action shoot them up with two pistols, The Matrix type action with Oozies or Sincity/Frank Miller Comic Books - this game is just that! With a brilliant Frank Miller type storyline and action that makes many action movies look bad, this game is a must own for any die hard action fan. This is a third person view type game though, but it does makes sense in that it would be the only way to see all the action in a cinematic movie viewpoint. This is the first game to introduce the new concept of bullet time. Bullet time is the idea where when the action gets so involved and gritty that the motion of the battles goes into slow motion mode (example: Neo in Matrix when he dodges bullets in slow motion) You actually see the bullets fly passed you as you jump back with two pistols blazing and scraping the enemy just as his bullets carves away paint on the walls. The graphics for this game surpasses any other game - even surpasses games such as Half-Life and Alice. There were several instances during gameplay that I forgot that everything wasn't real and that it was 3D sculpted. Perhaps most of the graphics are created in 3D Studio Max - which gives the game its realistic Hollywood movie look. Gameplay is excellent and there are many weapons to choose from (Single and twin Baretta's, single and twin Ingram Oozies, Pump action shotgun, Sawed-off shotgun, Sniper rifle, grenade launcher, molotov bottles, grenades, machine gun rifles, baseball bat, etc...) The game even features mods that you can make yourself and levels that can be designed by you. I believe there was a mod at (website address) that has a Face/Off level with speeding boats and face off shootouts in churches; and another mod with the Matrix lobby shootout with Neo and Trinity blasting away guards. This mod has even twice more the weapons than the game ordinarily has - including a kung-fu feature where you can do Backflip kicks, kung-fu roundhouses and kicks, and jump kicks all while holding your weapon. For people who are thinking - "but this is a third person view type game like Resident Evil!," think again - there is a mod that can be downloaded that enables you to play in first person view/shooter much like that of quake and unreal (You can even have picture in picture of both views at once) This game is definitely for people who cannot get enough of cool John Woo and Matrix type action movies. If you even thought about taking on the entire mafia mob all by yourself - Max Payne does just that! Buy it!!!!!

I gotta say. I didn't think too much of it when I looked at the back of the box in the store. I bought it, and took it home. I was blown away! This game is non stop fun. It doesn't get frusterating like a lot of other games i've played. The difficulty is up there but it isn't bad at all. There's nothing like using the bullet time feature to do some cool stunts to kill your enemies. I highly recommend this game. YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED!

This game starts of by telling you that you are a NY cop on the verge of insanity because your wife and baby were killed by drug addicts. You are also framed and basically everybody is out to get you. You set out to avenge them and also clear your name. This leads to several interesting twists and turns - hours of enjoyment !

The bullet-time feature is a real joy, you get to see everybody in super slow-mo, and you can move at normal speed and shoot them. Really useful if you are outnumbered. There are lots of puzzles that are not too difficult to solve, you so won't be frustrated. Nice movement of storyline through comic strip based story telling. The graphics are great too, which is always an important feature.

The end of certain levels are insane, with tons of goons. Bullet-time again comes to the rescue. On the whole, a really cool game that will provide you hours of fun. Replayability is provided by the features that get unlocked once you finish the game.

MAx payne is a comic style game. You move in and out of comic pages as the plot thickens up. The game is the best ive played in years. Theres a lot of crap out there folks, make sure you dont step in it! This game really topos the charts. The game stays fun even after you beat it! I have played this again and again and even now late in 03 this game Still totally Rawks!

I got this game when it was new and it was worth it, it's incredible! Initially I thought that the slow motion thing would be hard to use and pointless but it is really easy to use and incredibly fun; all you do is hit right mouse button and a direction and you dive in that direction in slow-mo. The story is really interesting, it's almost like watching a movie, you really get into it. The overall gameplay is superb, the weapons are cool (even though there aren't that many of them), and the realism is there. This game is definetly worth the money and will give you hours of fun, the only downside is that there is no multiplayer gaming...

One of the best games ever.

I have to start by saying Amazon.com's price is hilariously outrageous. I can get this game over here for 9.99$ brand new and I live in Canada! Anyway, Moving on to the game, I give it a Five stars in every department. The graphics, sounds, voice acting, action, storyline.... everything. What you have here is basically the perfect Hardboiled story line, LOTS of weapons, Illicit drugs, Lunatics and did i meantion..... Lots of weapons? :) Anyway, this is an all time great and I suggest you get it, But remember to have a computer above 500mhz for it to run nicely.
(P.s. the comic thingies in the game are wicked, So is everything Max says..)

...I started playing and found out that this game is amazing!! its a new shooter based game with a lot of plot just the way i like it...The weapons are cool, i wish there would be more though, really cool bad guys, Awsome GAME!! i would recommend this game to anyone who like action-packed shooter based games!!..

Well, thats simple, just great graphics engine, smooth movements, incredible action secuence (matrix's style), this the best, when you get action climax the 3D enviroment just look terrific. The best of violence in a PC game masterpiece Dont miss the action's PAINE!!!!

This game is the BOMB. Not for the kiddies tho. It has a lot of mature themes to it that can be disturbing for the faint of heart, but if you love action, intense drama, and dropping baddies in a pool of red KOOL AID you'll want to buy this game. A must have if you watch Hong Kong Action flicks, or a fan of the Matrix.
