I must admit that I've been a fan of Id Software's products for quite some time (Commander Keen even). And many of their games have had industry changing effects:
Wolfenstein 3D - The first major shareware game. You could buy the floppy of just a few levels for 5$ and spread it around to your friends. I can't even count how many time's I've played through the first episode, only to have my progress halted by the "To purchase the other episodes, please blah blah blah...." after mowing down level upon level of nazi scumbags.
Doom - A first person shooter you could play with your friends! Shoot them, OR have them help you shoot the enemies! Ah, the countless hours spent trying to get the modem-play to work and shouting "If the phone rings, don't pick it up!"
Quake - Now with support for more people than your bandwith can handle (at the time). Plus the ability to add user-made modifications to the game without actually editing the .exe!!! This led to the first incarnation of the CTF FPS, which is a must for any multiplayer FPS today.
Quake 2 - Multi-processor support!? The programmers at Id have some skill.
The later versions of Doom have always been primarily single-player, while the Quake line has focused on Multi-player. I am looking forward to this latest installment of Id's long list of accomplishments. And I'm sure that any ground-breaking technologies in the game won't even be realized for a few years.
Prepare to spend lots of $$$ for PC upgrades

Everyone is ranting and raving about the graphics and how amazing they are. It is true. The graphics are better than any FPS I've ever seen. The background music, produced by Trent Reznor, is chilling. However... For any FPS to be fun, it must run smoothly with little or no frame- rate choppiness. This game will not run on a Pentium 4 with stock graphics and video cards. The hard drive in your computer right now most likely won't be able to contain the fully-installed game. The real question is, is it worth dropping hundreds of dollars into Doom 3 for just another First Person Shooter with amazing graphics and sound? This you must answer for yourself.
Scary & Fun

I bought this game when it had first came out and decided to play it at night with the sound up and the lights off. Not my best choice of things. This game is as scary as they claim. Not a game for the faint of heart. By this game!
Lives up to the hype

Doom 3 was supposed to be fun, scary, look AWESOME graphically, and have some great sound. It has all that it promised. The graphics are top notch, if you have a system that can handle it. The sound is unreal, but I reccommend some fairly powerful surround sound speakers to really enjoy the "environments" in Doom 3.
As far as gameplay, its fast moving, you never know what's coming next, and you WILL jump outta your chair from time to time! There are a GOOD amount of weapons to attain, and the monsters are well designed. The levels are as deep and dark as they should be for a game titled Doom 3.
This is DEFINETLY a game to buy if you are into action packed PC gaming.
For reference, my system is a Dell XPS Gen 3 with a 3.4ghz P4 Extreme edition, ATI 256mb X800 XT graphics card, 1 GB of RAM, a 20 inch LCD monitor and Klipsch Promedia 5.1 500 watt surround sound.
Good luck and enjoy!
Freaky as hell.

I've been anxiosly waiting for the release of this game ever since it was announced that there's going to be another chapter in the DOOM series. This game is the sole reason I build my current powerhouse PC... I want to make sure the monsters are as clear as they can be so I can get the full scary effect Id intended.
I also played this at QuakeCon 2003 and it was the most intense 15-minutes of gaming I've ever experienced. I wiped the floor with my buddies, too!
Yes, we've been waiting a long time. Yes, Id's theory is that "it'll be done when it's done." That just guarantees us gamers an even better experience, and now it's almost here!

If your new to gaming this will be a great experience..
If you like me and expect a good replay from a game this will be technologically entertaining.. not much else. The real benefit to this game will be as a benchmark so that people can spend 100's of hours optimizing their PC's to get an additional 3 fps out of it.
I'm much more interested to see what real game developers can make out of the engine. ID is an engine house that pretends to make games. If you thought Quake III was a game your mistaken. More like an extended demo.
That being said, people will buy this game because it starts with 'DOOM' and ends in the next # in the sequence.

Strange, Doom 3 and Halflife 2 are both being released on the same day, and both have been pushing back their release dates forever. Conincidence or conspiracy? You decide.
Three stars for both, seen demos of both their engines and was thouroughly amazed with the graphics and physics within these new games, but I'm just tired of them delaying and delaying and delaying.
