Buy QUAKE 4 instead

Save your money and buy quake 4 instead. Graphics and sound are amazing, no doubt about that. But its the monotonous game play, hallways, corridors that will make you go puke. What's the point in playing the game in dark. And dont get me started on the "Flash light", such a pain in the rear. What the hell ! You cant hold flash light in one hand and a weapon in another. Moreover it should have been attached atleast to pistol, machine gun and shot gun. Another down side is that, you cant appreciate the well developed monsters, either its too dark, or they just jump at you and you have to kill them in an instant and then, their bodies turn into ash. Still the graphics are amazing, havent seen any game with such great graphics. Quake 4 has an advantage over this game, like the flash light is attached to the weapons, dynamic levels, variety in game play and so on. And it uses Doom 3 engine.
To many scary Golly Woggles to play with.

The graphics were very nice and I enjoyed the opening themes. What became redundant was that the same creatures came at me time and time again. It bacame a lightning show of not to spooky guys. The weapons at that point in the game lacked punch. I also found that I lacked ammo quite often. It wasn't until I get into the later part that the golly woggles began to get just a little more scary, well just a little. Some if the aliens were far to accurate for their own good, and could take a far greater pounding than a normanl marine could deliver. Far too many taunts and not enough action at times. I found that I took one to many elevator trips into the airless court yard. This didn't add style to the game. I felt it actually took away from it. I know its a shootem up but it would have been nice to get a little more history or some sence of knowledge of the alien culture. Perhaps next time game makers will consider a cooperative mode so other can join in.

Great game, great graphics, BUT, I have a 2.8ghz system with 1gb of ram and a Radeon 9600 128MB video card and I can only play this game on low res, which is still good. I just upgraded to the Radeon 9800 256MB video card, I hope that will make a difference.
excellent graphics engine, AI a little predictable

OK, like everyone says, the graphics engine is the best out there -- the lighting from the flashlight and all the ambient lighting from the swinging lamps, flashing red alert sirens, etc, are unbelievable.
My only problem was that the gameplay of the monsters coming at you turned a bit predictable after a while. Comparing this to Halo, for example, I enjoyed halo more in the sense that each monster acted drastically different, and there are "puzzles" in halo like having to figure out that those certain larva creatures will explode on your shields.
I found one specific part of the game to be excellent -- because the monsters are coming at you so much for a while, there is a roughly 10 minute portion in the middle where things calm down, BUT you are still on edge waiting for something to happen! Good scripting with that.
So, the game is great, but don't expect it to be everything you want and you will enjoy it more I suspect.
Great FPS!!

Fans of any of the FPS games will enjoy this game. It has some flaws....
the environment doesnt change as much as I would like. The great majority of the game takes place in a marine stronghold in mostly darkness. Very spooky, but more outdoor environments would have only been a benefit.
I think it is 100% worth buying. The graphics and sound are fantastic. The multiplayer part is fun too.
Overall, a great game, a must have, and I think it is worth the price.
Fun but becomes repetative and predicatble

I'm a huge fan of the Doom franchies, so naturally, when Doom 3 was released, I was extremely eager to buy it. While it is a good game, it becomes repetative....
But man what glorious graphics! Let me tell you, the technical detail has never been so staggering and all around awesome on any game ever created. Perfect curves, great colors, realsitic characters, and scare-you-outta-your-pants like zombies make it all worth it.
As for the game itself, it is a good game overall, heck maybe even great... but it does lack of originallity in gameplay and variety. If you like throwbacks, this game is perfect for you. Predictable first-person shooter about a man who goes to Mars for a new military post and eventually becomes a one man wrecking crew agains Hell's army. If you liked the original games, your gonna love it... but if your new to the series, and you'll probably wind up thinking that its a good game but too redundant for your true liking.
Crying about Flashlights?

This is just a small aside to everyone who complains about 1) the flashlight and 2) having to get new hardware
1) ever try to hold a flashlight AND a shotgun at the same time, and fire one? how about a rifle, or even a pistol? how many hands do you have, i only seem to have two... and i'm sorry, but happening to find weapons which all have a place to mount the same type of flashlight is just a tad unrealistic, even with suspense of reality. come on.
2) games are generally always written to push the cutting edge of hardware available to the general public. otherwise, what's the point? why would you write a game today that utilizes old technology... in 6 months the things available to run this game at max will be mainstream, computer equipment depreciates about as fast as anything i can think of. i personally wouldn't want someone to write a game to cater to a computer i bought two years ago, for that, i would buy a two year old game that is on clearance... i'm sorry but playing to an old hardware market just doesn't make sense from any perspective. if you can't run it on your machine, turn the settings down... don't act like this is something new, or go back to your console gaming. it has always been this way with PC games.
if doom3 isn't a "gamers game" then what is? it's just an unfortunate fact of playing games on a PC, they evolve, and the tech aspect improves. even old school doom had window sizing, and resolution settings, because it was the same back then as it is now, if you don't remember or weren't there, do your homework.
there's always going to be something you can find to complain about, and there will always be naysayers, but between the superb graphics, great gameplay, and the awesome atmosphere, what are you really asking for in addition to that?
Great game, great graphics, [bad] multiplayer?

the game looks insanely realistic. when the game was still new and they barely worked on much it already put all present games to shame. its intent is to scare the [pooh] outta you and it will do just that. there is only one problem, it is going to have barely any multiplayer, imo if a game *especially FSP* doesnt have multiplayer itn't anywere near as good as it could be. I can't wait until they use the doom 3 engine on quake or unreal or some game like that

Graphics, lighting are very good, but textures are a bit too dull and simplistic. Unfortunently the game features the same cliched story as the original doom, and doesn't seem to be pushing the first person genre forward. Running down corridors blasting monsters seems to be the overall aim of the game - where as ID promissed a atmospheric and scary experience. Yea right.
