Doom 3 ROCKS!!! Yes, you need a near state of the art machine to enjoy it cranked to all it's visual glory. So what? PC gaming's always been that way. If you can't handle that, there are always *yecchh* console systems.

I've been an avid PC gamer for over a decade, and a handful of games have left me with a racing pulse and caused me to nearly fall out of my chair on occasion, and Doom 3 might be the top dog in this department, displacing System Shock 2. Which is just above Dooms 1 & 2, of course. Playing D3 causes discomfort... yes, making your way along narrow, dimly lit passageways, never knowing when the lights may go out, never knowing when some minion of hell will jump out of the dark or from behind that closed door isn't good for the blood pressure... but dayum, is it fun! When things get too heavy, I relax with a little Star Wars KotOR. Sort of cleanses the palet. Then I get my sh*t together and back to the Mars UAC complex I go.

The graphics in D3 are just phenomenal. It was worth waiting 4 years for, in my opinion. Since much of D3 occurs in dark and shadowy areas (which fits in perfectly with the story), you need to use your trusty flashlight. And the designers at Id nailed it perfectly -- it looks exactly like a flashlight beam in the darkness! Amazing. And the sound... WOW. If you're using surround sound speakers, you'll hear the shambling footsteps of an undead creeping up behind you! Think you can take refuge in that dark corner? Think again, because chances are there's a zombie waiting for you!

There's lots of environmental interaction, as well. Objects move, you access computer terminals, PDAs, various keypads, use a giant grabbing claw to move toxic barrels, and lots of other cool stuff. Pre-recorded voices remind you to follow procedure, or remind you of all the great things UAC is doing for humanity. Gotta love it.

The intro level (before things literally go to hell) is nice because you get to experience the facility and the fine people who work there, which makes it all the more frightening when the poo hits the fan.

Best of all, it felt like Doom. Like when you played Doom for too many hours a decade ago, and had a nightmare about being stuck in inside the game that night.

Id Software, we salute you.

HL2 Versus Doom3

So, the two camps are already dividing and starting the flame wars on which game will be the superior FPS upon release...

I saw someone offer the opinion that Doom 3 will have the better graphics and Half Life will be "more immersive". Personally, I never found anything immersive about running around, crouching to one knee, and taking a shot that had a "real life targeting system" that basically means that it doesn't matter WHERE you see your crosshairs, the bullet is going to randomly go somewhere else. I found the Rouge Spear series *far* more engaging and immersive in this genre than Half Life, and I've always been surprised by the huge following that Half Life and it's various mods like Counter Strike have. My guess is that it is more an issue of accessibility than it really is of how strong the game engine is. Half-Life, to me, is the Windows 32 OS of FPS games... it may not be the BEST, but everyone has it, so that is what gets all the attention.

With that said, I imagine if you are a Half Life player, you'll prefer the game play of Half Life 2. If you are a Doom or Quake player, you'll prefer Doom, once the final retail releases are available. Arguing over which is BETTER is an exercise in futility, because it really comes down to a matter of personal taste. With that in mind, I see no reason to assume that Doom 3 will deserve anything less than 5 stars on release, assuming you enjoy this type of first person shooter. If you're a Half Life fan, save your money, and stick with your game, we won't miss you and your llama complaints in the multiplayer online mode...

doomed doom 3

If you liked all the old doom games, this will be a great disappointment. No instant play here, unless ID writes a cheat or revises it (noy likely). I have spent 2 days trying to find a weapon. Hadn't seen a spook yet! The learning curve is way high for me. It don't come close to Unreal Tournment 2004. Save your money.

I would not know because amazon still has not sent it....

I was only a little kid back in the day when the original doom stunned the nation, and i have been playing this game for 10 years. There were certin qualities doom had to it that kept me playing; incrdible gameplay, suspense, adventurous murder, and the sheer scope of hell. doom 2 was just a generic version of the original with some improvments, but this is the game ive been waiting for scince i was 6.

It's... disappointing.

I'm not impressed by this game. Nor by its graphics.

True, my machine is running a Radeon 9000 128MB DDR (that's a DirectX 8.1 card, so no DX9 capabilities), but nonetheless, even in the screenshots from DX9 cards, I'm simply not impressed.

Half the time it's so bloody dark I can't see anything anyhow. And the framerate is awful, at 1024x768x32, no FSAA or AF, medium detail and no lighting. My machine is a 2.4GHz P4C with 1GB of DDR333, more than powerful enough; it's clearly the graphics card which is underpowered to run this game. And that's fine. Or it would be, were the graphics impressive. But they aren't, at least not to me.

Personally, I remember being floored by Unreal Tournament's graphics. And then not-so-impressed by UT2k3's; "wasn't UT the same..?" then I checked back and saw that no, they were in fact a great deal more primative.

However, I'm still not impressed in any way by this game.

I've read most of the reviews here and I must say -- you guys must have been expecting something totally different than the rest of the gaming world. Where did you hear about DOOM3?

DOOM3 has been the talk for years now. It's nothing new. Its a remake of the original using the latest technology and graphics hardware.

I find the game simply stunning and the game play reminds me a lot of the original, just better graphics and sound effects.

DOOM is a classic. DOOM3 is awesome.

If you dislike the game, return it and let the true DOOM die-hards frag-on.

I'm sure it's fun. Wish it worked!

I've been anguishing over getting this game to work. Apparently my NVIDIA 64 card doesn't have the right drivers to play the game. So I attempted updating these with no success. The DOOM troubleshooting doc (and their website) are about as minimalistic as a Mark Rothko painting. And why not include a tech support line if you release a game that's only supported by something like 3 video cards.

Sigh.

just don't buy this game

How fun can it be to run around in hallways with a flashlight? Then, when a monster pops out (which is extensively predictable), you have to put the flashlight away and pull out a gun, at which point you can hardly see to appreciate the graphics. Yes, the graphics are good, but THIS ENGINE DOESN'T HOLD A CANDLE TO SOURCE!!! Just don't buy this game. Use the money to buy something worthwhile, like HALF LIFE 2!!! NOT THIS PEICE OF $#(!

DOOM 3 SUCKS!!!

DOOM 3 is not fun like the oringnal Doom games. It is IMO the retelling of DOOM 1 (or Ultimate Doom). My dad bought the game today but after playing D3 for 30 minutes, I became real bored. Then I went back to playing the orignals in the same day. Do not buy this game. It is very boring and the weapons are not fun at all. The enemies aren't that amazing. And like most people,I don't like the fact that most of the game is in the dark. I agree that the graphics aren't all that impressive. There are plenty of mods for Doom 3 but Doom (1-2 and Final) have a lot more. Please do not buy Doom 3!!!!!!!!! You can get the orignals for less than fifteen dollars. You will have a lot more fun with the oringnals than Doom 3!! Again do not buy Doom 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Especcialy the people with the lower end computers and cards!)
