What Halo was for the first Xbox

This game is amazing, had to run out and buy an Xbox360 after playing it for the first time. I was thinking of holding out for the PS3 later in the year or for the price to drop in the Spring but after playing Gears of War I had to go get myself a 360.

The single player story mode is pretty short but you'll definetly be playing through it more than once so you can get all the achievements and locate the COG tags. I'm playing again on Hardcore right now and still having fun with it along with also playing multiplayer online.

Online multiplayer needs more maps, but I hear Epic is working on more downloadable content.

If you've played Call of Duty 2 or 3 it's not even comparable. Don't get me wrong, those are great games but it's not like you are part of the environment as much as you are in GOW. You have to become intimate with the cover system, roadie run, and other moves. Great, great game.

Just a warning for Parents (I am one myself). Don't play this game with your kids in the room or buy it for children. Very violent and bloody. You don't want your 8 year old chainsawing someone in half and having blood splatter the screen while the intestines hit the ground (YES IT IS THAT GORY).

I've notice a lot of high-pitched squeaky voices on Xbox live, these kids should not even be allowed to play this game. However for the mature audience this is the best game out there right now. For all you Wii fanboys and girls I have one of those too and I admit it is a blast, but it doesn't touch Gears of War.

Online gameplay needs much work

This game is fantastic, don't get me wrong. The graphics are amazing in High Definition (and standard definition they are great as well) and it has a very Half-Life 2 feel to it (though I've heard differently from many people).

The gameplay lasts about 5-10 hours depending on what you do in gameplay. You can complete gameplay in three different modes, and they are all fun to do and most people complete all three modes. You can complete this with a partner or with a partner online. It's fun playing coop online and provides a better experience (plus easier to complete the harder level difficulties the game provides).

The online has flaws and deficiencies that hurts the overall quality of the game, in my opinion. The host for an online server cannot change any host options unless he/she closes down the server (therefore kicking everyone out to the main game menu) and restarts the server. Provides for a huge hassle. Also, there aren't enough online playable maps and the ONLY mode you can play is just a "team battle" (I will steal COD3 terms) which makes it very boring after a while. There are VERY few options on the multi player menu and the refresh screen to load the servers takes about 15 seconds to load. It may not sound a lot, but when you are excited to play it causes from a lot of frustration.

The graphics are FANTASTIC. The players, buildings, scenery, and graphical visuals all seem real and are the best graphics I have ever seen on any game. It's that amazing.

This game is a must-have for all Xbox 360 owners. Simply put.

Possibly The Best!

Gears of War is possibly the best Xbox 360 game currently on the market. The graphics are superb and so is everything else about the game. The storyline is very fulfilling and interesting If I might add. Multiplayer is extrememly addictive and fun. Many, many gametypes and maps to keep you busy for hours at a time. The weapons are all amazing in their own way. The button layout is perfect and that makes Gears of War very easy to adapt to. Overall, the game is everything I expected and I recommend it to ANYONE who owns or plans on owning an Xbox 360!!

Fun...fun...fun...fun...fun...

Unlike other game that just kill everything in sight, this game is awesome. It's got beautiful graphics and background songs. I have regular TV, not HDTV and the graphic is HDTV-like. Rather than killing human enemies, you're killing monsters in this game.

This game is rated M for Mature. It's got a lot of swearing. If you're getting this game for kids, this is not a good choice.

Amazing graphics; so-so gameplay

As others have stated, the graphics of this game are incredible. However, the gameplay IMO gets pretty stale quickly. I played the entire campaign (way too short) in the easiest mode and am half-way through the hardcore level and am getting bored with it already. The weapons are not very exciting and you can go through the whole campaign using only one(besides hammer of dawn)of them which is just a machine gun with a chainsaw on it.

The online co-op is fun, but the online matchmaking, gameplay and maps don't even campare to Halo. I've been through Halo and Halo2 about 15 times and I'm still not tired of it. If you already have a 360 then it's probably a worthwile game to get, but I bought the 360 just from the reviews of this game and I'm a little disappointed (not by the 360)because I was going to wait until Halo3 came out to buy it.

Good but short

My husband bought this game the day after it came out and had beaten it co-op on-line by the next day. For 60 bucks, that was very disappointing. If you look at how you get the gamer points for this game it is by beating it several times on different difficulty levels. For all the hype, the game could have been much longer that is why it is not an overall 5 stars. If you want play it, but have little or no interest in playing it on-line, it is really worth only a rental.

That being said, the game has many great features. The graphics are the best I have ever seen for a video game. It is hard to believe that it gets any better then this no matter what system you prefer. The graphics are great even playing the game on XBOX live. My husband loves the controls, too. He said that they are so easy to use that you forget you are playing a game at times. The game is non-stop action that keeps the player full involved from start to finish. If you are an XBOX live junkie, and plan on going on-line with the game a lot that is when it is worth the purchase of the game because you will probably get a lot of use out of it.

A Good Game; A Few Glaring Flaws...

Let me first state that I DID enjoy this game. Though I have yet to play online multiplayer, I have played against friends in system-link, and that was quite a blast. Now, let's get down to the review.

THE GOOD:

*Graphics: The graphics are excellent. It's a very nice looking game, and everything is richly textured and detailed.

*Enemy AI: Pretty well done. For the most part, the enemies were smart enough not to run headlong into my fire.

*Levels: I enjoyed the level design on this game quite a bit. It does feel like you're fighting through the burned-out wreckage of civilization.

*Combat: The combat was, for the most part, very fun. I enjoyed the "duck-and-cover" aspect of it, although that had a few problems (more on that later).

*Weapon Buttons: The controls as far as using weapons are pretty well laid out. I especially like the "active reload" feature, as it allows you to quickly reload under fire and start shooting bach ASAP.

*Voice Acting: While Fenix's voice is a little on the silly side at first, the voice acting is nicely done in this game. Unlike some games, there isn't much of that "can I have my paycheck now" monotonous tone in the actors' voices.

*The Multiplayer: I enjoyed this as well. It's not for everyone, though, and I've always preferred first-person to third-person view, but I still had a lot of fun with this.

THE BAD:

*Friendly AI: Your squadmates are absolute morons. Apparently, the command "regroup" translates to "run headlong into enemy fire, get gunned down like an idiot, and repeatedly hassle the player to revive you". During boss fights, they become more of a hindrance than a help. During both the first fights with the Berserker, my ally was _supposed_ to be distracting it with fire so that I could focus a laser on it and have an overhead satellite kill it. Instead, he took cover behind a low wall and sat there the entire fight. The problem here is that when you focus the beam, the gun goes "beepbeepbeepbeep", the berserker hears it and runs at you, and one hit from it is enough to kill you. Dumb AI is acceptable in standard shooters where you are a one-man army, but when you're relying on other characters to help, it's incredibly frustrating.

*Controls: Mostly, these are fine, but what really bothers me is the lack of a simple "jump" or "sprint" button. You can only jump over low walls, and to do that, you have to take cover behind the wall, hold forward, and press A. The sprint is a crouch-run, which is mostly ok, except for two issues: One, the visual "reverse fisheye" effect is sort of dizzying, and two, if you run into a wall you automatically take cover. The stickyness of cover commands often leads to unecessary death as you shout "NO I MEANT JUMP OVER IT NOT STAND THERE AND GET SHOT! ARGH!"

*Final Boss: I think this fight is outlandishly difficult. I've tried several times to beat him; I even lowered the difficulty; but I just can't beat him. Not only is your AI compatriot useless, but one or two hits from the boss and you die. The layout of the area is such that you often find yourself stuck between a rock and a hard place: run into the light and get mowed down by the boss, or stay hidden behind a wall, in the dark, and get eaten by a cloud of flesh-eating creatures? YOU MAKE THE CALL!

*The Storyline: This game seems to enjoy just dropping you in the midst of the action with almost zero backstory. Which can be quite enjoyable, when the story is fleshed out over the course of the game. This one isn't. I felt myself not really caring about the plight the humans faced in this game, because they never really explained much of it. it was basically "We need to kill Locusts because they are evil" with no meat on the story. The plot of this game seems to be an incredibly generic, uninspired "humans vs. ugly aliens" plotline.

--------------

Again, overall, this was a good game, and I recommend it to anyone who likes Third Person Shooters. My biggest recommendation is that you play co-op instead of solo.

Eh.

Not terrible, but nothing compared to the hype. I guess every once in a while there has to be a game with a lot of hype. If you like Unreal, which I admittedly don't, then you'll probably like this more than I did. I wasn't particularly impressed.

"Take cover" from the hype

I am a FPS fan. I have never liked 3rd person shooters (GOW is 3rd person by the way) except for Mercinaries. I just bought a 360 a few days ago and was eager to buy some "only on xbox 360" games. Since I had heard so many good things about this game like, "it will sell systems" and "best game of all time, buy it right now" I decided to pick it up along with some others for my new system. Overall I was disapointed. I had more fun playing Perfect Dark! Maybe its just because of my preferance of 1st person over 3rd person shooters, I dont know. It's true that the graphics are nothing short of amazing and the controls are fairly easy to learn which earned it the 2 stars. The problems lie with the lack of freedom and clumsyness of the cover system and controls. Too many times I found myself diving from cover insted of breaking to another peice of cover. The croutch run (the only run) is not easy to use unless you plan to run in a strait line. The absence of a crasshair drives me CRAZY as well. This game wasn't bad, I had some fun playing it but if you dont own a 360, please dont fork over hundreds of dollars just to play this game. Its not worth that. I wish I would have waited a few months and bought it off the used rack at gamestop.
