The Most Over-Hyped Game for Teenagers - EVER

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 7 / 19
Date: January 29, 2007
Author: Amazon User

I say this game is for kids 18 and under because you have to be one of those kids in order to compete on line with some success. It's the same nonsense as Halo 2. If you are 30 years or older with a life other than playing Halo 2 or Gears of War 10 hours a day after school, then this game is not for you. I have yet to play with anyone who sounded like they were out of high school yet. Therefore, as the old man that I am, I enter these live matches immediately dying from kids who have spent 100s of hours memorizing the maps and perfecting headshots. It's a completely different experience like say, entering a racing game (i,e.-PGR2) where you can be a "noob" and still have some fun.
As far as the single player mode - one of the most OVERHYPED and OVERATED games ever. I respect what EPIC is doing and their UNREAL engine is phenomenal. No one can question that this may be the most graphically intense game for any console to date. However, that and great sound quality are the only things the game has going for it. Here are all the cons:

* Save-points are a joke. I can't believe in today's day and age you can't save at any point. Elder Scrolls IV, though a totally different type of game, allows you to save at any point so you are not doing the same thing over 40 times until you get it right. To boot, I haven't found a way to skip the cut scenes. Inexcusable!
* Levels of difficulty are poorly designed. You can either play IQ-50-easy to ridiculously hard. Therefore, accessibility is limited to the hardcore player (ironically most 12 to 18 year olds). If you are a casual player, forget it. Although, there is actually a "Casual" mode which my 4 year old can play. There is no "in-between" for normal adults who have some skill and a life outside of video games.
* Controls are clunky at best and have a huge learning curve. The A button is used for everything from jumping, running, and wall cover/sticking. Therefore, if you are running from an ememy in the single player or a 12 year old on-line and you run by a wall, you can kiss it goodbye. You inadvertently stick to the wall and get blown away by said 12 year old who is more than happy to also stomp on your head for additional humor. Also, the camera view when running (a.k.a. - roadie view) makes it very hard to see where you are actually going. Yeah, that's real fun.

I like the third person over the shoulder view that was stolen from Resident Evil 4. However, for the single player mode, this game is falls way short of the greatness of RE4 in ever single aspect, save the graphics.
Bottom line -If you are still in high school and don't have a girlfriend/boyfriend and have no ambitions besides living at home with your parents for the rest of your life, then this game is for you. All others save your money for much better XBOX 360 titles.

Excellent, Engaging, Addictive

This is a great game that will keep serious gamers tied to their 360 for hours on end, their machines humming, and their mom's yelling at them. Superb graphics, realistic scenery, ugly aliens, loud explosions, and lots of blood.

It is good that you have the option to take out the extreme content. it would be better to have the option of taking out the frequent cursing as well.

Excellent game

Okay, first of all..this game is not an FPS it is a third person shooter, not a first person. And second, SOULR3AV3R55 "SOULR3AV3R55" no one told you to keep playing you could have stopped and third this game is completely and utterly amazing.
I agree that the teammates dying does get old, but that makes the game that much more realistic. The weapons are completely unique and fascinating to just chainsaw a Locust in half then do it again and again.
This is my opinion but I like this game better than Halo. I love the Halo series, I cannot wait until Halo 3 comes out but for right now, my gaming life, and Xbox LIVE is completely full of G.O.W. Highly recommended.

Buy Gears between now and Halo 3

Gears blends action with innovation to result in what eventually will be called a classic. If you're bored between now and Halo 3, this game is your fix.

Gear's story is nothing special; gameplay is what shines here. You move through various buildings, caves, temples and courtyards throughout the game using duck-and-cover tactics to avoid enemy fire. Weapons are fairly standard with the exception of the insanely cool chainsaw bayonet which splatters blood across the camera with every mow-down. We all know it's frustrating when a shooter game drops an awesome weapon in your lap but shorts you on ammo, forcing you to conserve. Gears does away with that by providing everything in abundance - you just need to figure out which is needed for what you're up against at that moment. For instance, the only weapon powerful enough to kill a Locust juggernaut is one that needs an open sky for satellites to focus a fatal laser strike - the catch is that this creature is blind and you're in the building together, so the trick is to figure out a way to lure it outside by sound without getting trampled.

Co-op play is awesome, and usually the only way the game can end is if both players are KO'd. It really encourages the two of you to work together to bring down an enemy or revive your downed comrade, as the only way the team can advance is by doing so together. The controls are straightforward but the same buttons are used for different actions in different situations, so I occasionally found myself backed against a wall in plain enemy sight instead of speeding down the hallway toward where I planned to take cover (you'll only escape this mistake alive on the Casual difficulty setting). And Gears is essentially an R-rated game, with over-the-top violence and F-bombs dropped left and right. Put the kids to bed first.

Gears is likely the best shooter/adventure game since the original PS1 Metal Gear Solid, which probably marked the peak of the era in which videogames transitioned from cult to mainstream. Gamers who remember know that that speaks volumes.

HD will blow you away

I played this game on a regular TV, then I played it on an HDTV and the difference is incredible, it's like playing the game all over again. The detail in this game is so far above any game I've played, I had to walk around the levels I had already played just to admire the attention to detail. If you dont have an HDTV you must get one for this game, sell your car if you have to but get one.

The gameplay itself is just hard enough to be challenging, and just easy enough to keep you interested. The low quantity of weapon types is made up for in quality, there is nothing like carving up a bad guy with the Chainsaw Bayonnet.

A must have game.

Gears of War is simply a fantastic game. The controls are very natural and if you have played the Halo series you will pick up GoW in 15 minutes. The story is weak, but the gmaeplay makes up for all of that. Wait until you meet your first Berserker... With an HD set, you will be practically blown away by the graphics. Absolutely everything is fluid and the landscapes are masterpieces never seen before in the realm of console gaming. The blood and gore, in my opinion, make this game all the more fun. You actually get a feeling of loosing blood in this game as if it were your own. And nothing is better than sniping someone in the face with a pistol and watching their head explode. The sound is also great, but the weapons sound a bit weak and don't really blend with the "hardcore" feel of the game. The campaign is definetely very short, but that is why there is multiplayer. Only 4 guys a team, but you get used to it fast (plus the maps aren't that big so its fine). I love the fact that if you aren't behind some type of cover, in 3 or 4 seconds you will be a mess of pulp. No running and gunning here... cover is essential. You will die a lot in this game... a LOT. At least until you get used to it. Anyway though, what fun is a game that you don't die in. Hardcore is hardcore and insane is just about impossible. Go on multiplayer and make friends so you can beat it on insane. Sorry that the review is a bit mixed up but just get it in your mind that this is one hell of a game and you need to buy OR rent it for a very long time.

Short but phenominal

Gears of war is beautiful. It is the game that resistance fall of man and halo3 wanted to be. The controls are a delight, the weapons are easy to distinguish, the enemies are challenging. The game requires use of cover, dodging between strategic positions, use of allies, and blind fire to force enemies to duck while you change position. Graphics are nice and rumble and camera motion are incorporated well. It is worth noting that the game is a 3rd person shooter like metroid rather than 1st person shooter, but I found I really preferred the wider range of vision that this viewpoint gives. Your allies are intelligent and quite helpful. If you lose one you really notice as the enemies concentrate fire on you and can get flanking positions to pick you off.

The one down side is that the game is amazingly short, I beat it in under 10 hours and I didn't think I was halfway through. But due to the great level of quality I really look forward to playing it again with friends. It is just the right duration to have a friend over for a day and play through in cooperative mode.

Warning. The end boss it brutal. Even on "casual" I spent an hour repeatedly dying to him.

Best shooter ever!

Let's get right to it, this could be the best shooter ever! Halo and Halo 2 are great but pretty one dimensional at times, this games has everything Halo has... and more. They don't waste too much time on the plot and the story is reminiscent of many other sci-fi fiction out there but where the story falls short it makes up for in concept design and over all bad ass look of the hyper real environment and over the top characters in the game. The aliens are mean, big and scary as hell. This game doesn't lag, action, action and more action. What good is a shooter unless you can shoot all the time. Blood, bullets, gore and intense action.

Now we all know a shooter is only as good as the weapons, there is not an abundance of weapons in this game but the weapons it does offer will not disappoint. You have your standards, shotgun, sniper and rocket launchers. My personal favorite weapon in the default weapon you start with. a machine gun with a chainsaw bayonet which could be the coolest weapon in video games history, rev up the chainsaw and do some work and see why. The other notable weapon is the Hammer of Dawn, you can lock on to a target with a laser and annihilate you enemy with a death ray from an orbiting satellite...how cool is that.

The characters are charismatic as they are bad ass. This would make a great film if they could capture on film the look they archived in the game. Some say this game is too short, and it didn't take too long to beat but every great game is too short. this game has high relay value with three levels of difficulty, casual, hardcore and insane! I challenge you to beat this game on insane, it's damn near impossible, but fun to try.
Everything about the controls is user friendly and flows. You can blind fire behind cover command your squad that actually kills the enemy and has a health system like Halo, why waste time looking for health in a fast paced shooter. You don't have to be a hardcore to appreciate this game.

I can't say enough about this game and can't wait for the sequel in the coming years. Gears of War is the next great video game franchise and the biggest reason why i bought an X-box 360 over the PS2.

Yep. I played the disc too much that it actually broke. I loved the game that much and now I have to buy another copy. Yeah, it's only a duck-and-cover shooter. But a damn fine one at that! Buy it or die!

UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE!

Wow! Words cannot describe how great this game is. It's untouchable. I'm afraid to say it, but Halo might not even be able to compete with it. Bungie has a lot of work to do on Halo 3 to top Gears of War. This game is simply amazing! Hands down!

Once you pop GOW into your XBOX 360, you will be well on your way for the ride of your life. The gameplay is extremely well done and the music is phenomenal. Not to mention the GRAPHICS! These graphics have not and probably will never be matched in this generation of gaming. A lot of people have said how great the graphics are, but I have to write it down myself. Like the reviewer before me said, you simply have to see it to believe it.

Now, if this isn't the game that puts Sony to rest then I don't know what is. The PS3 doesn't have any games in their near future lineup to compete with this title. Look at it this way: you can buy a PS3 for $600 and get some good games that might be worth the money, or you can get a 360 for $400 and get to play Gears of War. Seriously, it's an easy choice.

I highly suggest that any 360 owner play this game. Don't just rent it, buy it. It's a game you'll want to play over and over again. Not to mention the amazing multiplayer. If you don't own a 360, then what are you waiting for? Go get one! Play GOW! It will blow you away!

Here's to Epic for making the Game of the Year and possibly one of the greatest games ever made. This is a gamer's dream!
