A great game, but not perfect.

"Legend of Dragoon" is similar to Final Fantasy games in that the battles are turn-based; involve weapons, items, and spells; and players get the option to levil up their characters for stronger attacks and more HP. On it's own, it is a fun, satisfying, and worthwile game. But it definitely doesn't hold a candle to the FF games.

Though the battle system is familiar to any RPG fan, it is the graphics that really give this game the edge. Boasting "3 years in the making, with a design team of over 100", their efforts were well spent. The battles are challenging enough, while the enemies are challenging and diverse. In terms of control, it is similar to most of the FF games, so it doesn't take long to master battles and manouvering. As the game progresses, the characters get stronger, allowing them to inflict even more damage. Overall, this is a challenging and rewarding game.

But sadly, this game is tainted by a few minor flaws. The cliched "Unlock the mysteries of the past" plot is nothing we haven't seen before, add to this the paper thin characters that we couldn't care less about. There are some technical flaws that need addressing. First, the number is items that can be carried. Why is it that you can carry 256 "Armed" items (weapons and armor) but you can only cary 32 standard items (like healing potions and cure potions, which is what you most often need)? Another flaw is that, unlike the free roaming of FF games, you are confined to the dotted lines on the world map. So there is little room for exploration. One thing that particularly bugged me about this game is that the plot is so linear, meaning that the side quests that we enjoyed with Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 3 are not prevelant here.

But these are minor flaws, considering that the point of the game is to fight until the end to save innocent people from bloodshed. This is not a deeply involved RPG, but rather more like an action game with RPG undertones. Not bad at all.

Final Fantasy? What's That?

Legend of Dragoon is awesome. In fact, in my opinion, it's the only game worthy to compete with Squaresoft's Final Fantasy series.

After playing most RPGs, I think, "It needed this," or, "It could have done without that." This is most likely because after playing Final Fantasy, you're spoiled. The Legend of Dragoon, however, doesn't make me think those things, yet it's also not a mere FF rip-off.

The story, which should be the basis of all RPGs, is excellent: you take on the role of a young man (that's right, MAN, not hyperactive 13-year-old) as he tries to avenge the death of his parents. While he does this, two empires are waging war with each other and he gets caught in the middle.

The battle system is very different, combining turn-based combat with timed button presses. You can also transform into "Dragoons" and unleash powerful magic and physical attacks.

Graphically, Dragoon is up to par with FFVIII. The characters (who are realistically proportioned; no gigantic heads) move on pre-rendered backrounds that generally have a lot going on in them, which creates a realistic world rather than a still picture. The cinemas are gorgeous, and they actually have solid voice acting too!

So in short, RPG gamers give Dragoon a try. You're in for a treat.

You people...

First of all. Some of you people need to step from the past to the future. Most of you are complaining " Oh, it's nothing like Final Fantasy" or " Oh. It has so many pixels and it's movement is jerky". " Oh, it was so boring I quit in the first disk". "The characters are flat and boring they never change"

Let me tell you, you negative ninnies, First of all, no this is not a Final Fantasy. Well done. This is a game beyond the rest in every aspect. Final Fantasy games were the past. FF7 is done and over with. Yes I played it, it was great but lets not hang on. Final Fantasy 7 characters were so illproportioned. They had square shoulders, no elbows, no nose or mouths. When Cloud walked his knees kinda folded in on itself. In TLoD walking, running and just about everything else is just like a human's actions. Tell me that the little triangle colored indicator over Dart's head wasn't helpful. If you were going to be attacked, wouldn't you see it charging you and take precaution?

You people who quit in the first disk never even delve into its plot twist with Dart, Rose, and Shana. I'm agahst at you. You never quit FF7 after the first disk. If you did you'd never see the best parts. Same with TLoD. Same with the characters. Aeirs had misfortune upon her just like Lavitz. Yet you still bad talk this. The changes come in the second and third disks just like FF7.

Anyway, this game had plot twist, awesome video screens, great battle time action, and I recommend all to play this facinating game.

This is the first RPG I couldn't finish. Its not because it was difficult. I stopped playing out of my own will because ths was, simply put, the most generic, boring RPG I have ever laid my eyes upon.

What would have become a great game changed into a catastrophic failure. First off, these characters looked like they were taken from FFVII, given a different haricut, and stripped of all their personality. Dart looks a lot like Cloud. Shawna looks a lot like Tifa. See some sort of resemblance here? Now if only the in-game 3D models moved and looked as good as Square's offerings. The characters lack any real depth of color, and the animation is choppy. The music lacks any power at all; this was also the first game I turned the sound off for. The songs were too repetitive and the voice-overs were pathetic.

Now my main gripe: The plot. What kind of half-assed shit is this? As one person put it, "I've seen a Power Rangers episode with a better storyline." The plot does nothing to keep you in its grasps to make the game at leats somewhat attractive to its players. The first plot twist will occur at the end of the second disc. That's about 20-25 hours away for things to get interesting. That would be a little forgiveable if only the characters weren't so damn boring. Each character sounds the same, they lack diversity, with one exception: the really big guy that sounds like a retard (I can't remember his name at the moment).

I will, however, give credit where credit is due: This game, while it has lackluster character models, also features some of the finest looking FMVs and backgrounds to ever grace the Playstation. If you're a gamer that enjoys great eye candy most of all, this is the game for you. If you enjoy strong plots, go with Xenogears (if you can find it) or Chrono Cross. If you like three dimentional, realistic, likable characters, pick out a Final Fantasy or a Lunar game.

The Legend Of Dragoon is a Great Game

The Legend of Dragoon is an awesome game that centers around a man in red armor (Dart) and the band of people he joins on his quest. It begins with a story of revenge for the death of his parents, but quickly morphs into battle scenes where he fights to save his friends, and eventually, a small love story works its way into the plot. Don't worry guys, it doesn't interfere the battle sequences. This game is tough in some parts, and easier in others, but it's well worth the money. You get a lot of challenging fights and you must solve puzzles in some areas to progress. The graphics are pretty good and personally, (DONT FLIP ON ME!!) I like this game a lot more than any of the Final Fantasies, except for FFX. I really liked this game a lot, and I own over 400 games for PS, PS2 and PC. This game is addicting, I come home and play for hours. You should get at least 40 hours of gameplay. By the way, the opening scenes made me mad the first time I played, but once you get past the beginning, you get 2 actually play the game. This game has a very involved plot, one of the better plots of RPG's. I hope this helped!

Love it!

I have been playing RPG's on computers since I was able to first buy a computer. From the very first days of the text adventures like Zork from Infocom, back in the late 70's, until now, I have enjoyed RPG's on computer and console.

I'm no authority on RPG's by any means but for a console game, Legend of Dragoon is off the hook. It's a fabulous game with many of the RPG elements I appreciate: leveling, spells, magic items, lots of monsters, good storyline, etc.

Like Zelda on NES and Shining Force II on Game Gear, Legend of Dragoon has given me newfound respect for console RPG's. I have not played Final Fantasy so if that is the measure of a console RPG game, then perhaps I haven't truly experienced what a console RPG can really be like.

But, suffice to say that Legend of Dragoon has me wanting for more. If you're thinking about getting this dated game, even now, do it. It's well worth the money.

Sony's answer to Final Fantasy

this game was absoulutly great. I loved it. Ever since I played the demo, I knew this was one for my collection. Now to answer the guy who complained about Shana being a "Damsel-In-Distress" I would have to disagree. Need an example? Urobolus, a boss fight against a giant snake. When he moves off the ground, revealing only his upper body, Lavitz & Dart can't reach him, So Shana with the bow is a major help ( besides using items)

Now anyway, the addition technique was indeed a unique system and I liked it, I guess some people play something so much that they get used to it. For example if you play Final Fantasy alot, then Legend of Dragoon's batlle system is different.

As far as a purchase, it depends on who you are if your a gamer that is looking for a great new RPG, then Buy, if you have to pick ONE RPG game, then rent this and a FF8 and see which you like better.

The Best RPG Ever!

Everybody who says this game is boring is totally wrong. And if you were just giving stars to the graphics then you should have given Legend of Dragoon 5 stars, for the graphics are one of the best qualities of this RPG. I think is has a great story and surprises that will knock you out of your seat. When I started to play it, I couldn't stop. I played it for 7 hours straight until 3 in the morning. The battles combos are hard for a lot of people to master but are worth it once you've mastered them. ( It took me 3 days to learn Dart's Moon Strike combo. Pathetic but hey, the outcome was great. ) Even if you hate the storyline and the battles you should play for the awesome movie clips that they play. ( Hint: You'll love the one after you got off the Phantom Ship. It's my favorite. ) So please buy this game and if you already have it and think it's horrible give it another chance.

No "leveling up"

I just finished the first disk with about 23 playing hours, and I love the game. Its fast moving and fun. There are a lot of good reviews, and I wont repeat what they have said.

If you have played any Final Fantasy games, you know that a lot of playing hours (id say 1/4 of them) are devoted to leveling up characters and/or getting gold to buy the latest equipment. I hate that I have to devote all my playing time one day to level characters up.

In this game you do not have to do that! If you keep running away to a minimum, you should be able to buy all the major equipement easly, with some extra dough for special misc. stuff. Also you will be able to fight through the next maze and boss with very little difficulty.

Two minor bad points: Number of items (healing stuff and battle items) are limited to 32, which can be a pain. Also the bulk of the experience tends to be with the bosses, so its important to try and keep all your characters alive for these battles, or they will miss an important level up. Ive noticed that at every major bosses, and some mid-bosses levels up everyone of my characters.

Which leads me to another good point, you fight with three characters, but all the characters that are available to fight, get experience. No more spending time switching to least favorite characters to keep them at the same level as your other characters.

This is the best game I ever laid my hands on. The cinema scenes look like they were out of a movie. The only exeptions to the amazing graphics is the characters are a little blocky. Anyway, the game starts out with a cinema scene were a village is getting burned to the ground. That's all I'll tell you about the wonderful storyline. But now it's on to combat. The Additionals idea was great! When you press X at a certain time you execute another strike. If you continue long enough you get a on screen and voice prompt of the final attack. My personal best is 7 hits(Blazing Dynamo). Now on to the Dragoons. In a nutshell a Dragoon is a super-human warrior. They have devastating attacks and magic. If they get to their maximum level(5) they can summon dragons. They only problem with the Dragoon system is that they can only stay has Dragoons for a set number of turns(equal to their level) Other than the exeptions stated above this is on helluva game!
