This looks more like the Dark Age.

I tried playing this game, but right from the start, I knew I was in trouble. No matter what I changed in the video options or on my monitor, this game was just too dark. The first guy I talked to I couldn't even see and the item he left me I couldn't find because it was just too dark. This is the only game I have had this problem with. It could be an awesome game, but I will never know.

Crash, black and boring

I spent hours on the phone trying to get the game to work and this is running an Athlon 750 processor with a GeForce DDR 256 graphics card and 512mb ram. It kept crashing my machine, when it didn't it was too dark to see. The plot was bad and there was poor logic to tasks. It just dragged on, Thief was much better and didn't try to be too clever. Don't buy this!

This game lacks....everything!

I purchased this games based upon Eidos' sight that listed, among other features, that this game was multiplayer, via various methods. I purchased the game, it arrived, and no multiplayer!!!! I am so angry...would have been much better had they really included that aspect of gameplay. As far as the game goes, the missions are just simply "weak." It is no wonder that Looking Glass went under, when one puts out a product as bad as Thief II, it is just no wonder.

Boring and Tedious

I have to say that I could not WAIT to buy this game when it originally came out. I was a huge fan of the first one and recommended it to everyone that was interested. I would not do the same with this one. I actually did not find the darkness to be a problem as many of the other people who have written reviews here did. What I did find to be a problem were the following:

1) storyline/plot, was very unintriguing.

2) the level of difficulty was extremely high, yet unnecessarily so. I want to clarify this statement - I enjoy challenging games. In fact, the more challenging, the better usually. However, the challenges in Thief 2 were what I would call "unskilled challenges". They were based more on how long you had the patience to check each square foot of every hallway in order to find a key or some such object. If you find it, it's not that you solved any kind of puzzle to reason where it was placed. It was just dumb luck requiring pointless hours of time painstakingly scouring a building ... if you like that kind of thing, great. I don't. Many of the levels required tedious tasks such as the above.

3) I agree with another reviewer that the foes were essentially unscary. The first Thief really provided a level of intrigue and suspense with the monsters and the plot. This one did not even come close.

All in all, I was wholly disappointed with the game. In fact, I almost didn't even feel like finishing it. I hope you enjoy it more than I did if you decide to buy it.

Dark, Dark, Dark

I love gaming, and really wanted to play this game, but it was just too doggone DARK! Most of the time, the screen is completely black. I think they saved a lot on graphics development. ;o)

I played for 45 minutes, and couldn't even get inside the building! I kept getting stuck on some unseen barrier, and the map they give you shows your general location, but was not detailed enough to pinpoint where I was and show me how to get around whatever I was stuck on.

My husband played for one afternoon, and didn't see much of anything either. The screen was black about 80% of the time.

I'd like to be able to see at least an outline of what's in front of me. Maybe the next game will be "Thief III: The Cave." :o)

great concept, but...

Vastly over-rated Game. I found this game incredibly boring and tiresome, but granted my tastes run more along the lines of Quake II, Half-Life, Rogue Spear, etc. Anyway, I thought this might be an interesting alternative to the first-person shooters but I was wrong. My main hang-ups with this game were as follows: (1) While yes, it was sort of fun to "sneak" around unseen, shoot out torches with your water arrow, steal treasure, etc., I spent hours stumbling around lost the "dark" in a maze of corridors with a completely black screen, which was a complete waste of time. (2) The guards that you are sneaking around trying to avoid or knock unconscious simply are not at all scary. (3) Also, their voices are terribly acted and strange - for example, one guard will say hum dum dee dum and then ramble on about nothing in a midwestern US accent to another guard who replies with a heavy British accent - minor point but nonetheless annoying. (4) The graphics ran smooth with a Pentium II, Voodoo 3dfx, but were still very poor and unrealistic. For example, outlines of doors simply appear on your pitch black screen when you're in the "dark". I admit I'm picky about these games, but I was hugely disappointed with this one.

A game like this needs an AI as good as Half-Life but that is missing here.

David Tate says:
Years ago I bought this game and loved it, unfortunatly it was made for Windows 95 and 98 only. So when I saw this version that advertises that is XP compatable, I bought it.
I had no problem installing the game, but when playing it if freezes the game and my computer after 1 minute of playing.
I am not sure what the problem is, but be warned; this could happen to you as well.
I wish it ran the way it did years ago.

I love this game. But, I can't play it on my new computer for some reason. It may be related to Win XP.
