Thief 2 is the game of the century! tHe first game knocked me of my feet with the awesome plot, graphics , and gameplay. The idea of the game, stealing, be stealthly, was a million dollar idea. I'm telling you, this is a GREAT game. Its REALLY worth your money.

Incredible - best game since Half Life

I liked Thief. Cool concept, great gameplay and story. I LOVE Thief II - it's everything good about Thief, but amplified. And they took out all the useless junk (skulking about in caves, killing zombies and monsters). AI is great. The graphics, while not at the level of Quake 3, are more than adequate, and the lesser detail allows for some HUGE mission maps. It takes a good hour and a half for most missions. As the title says, this is definitely the most engrossing game I've played since Half-Life... a definite contender for "game of the year" awards.

A masterpiece

Wow! Looking Glass is on a roll folks. Thief, System Shock 2, now this. The story is great, especially the way it is told (quick movies about the various factions followed by a story board format narrated by Garret the thief). The gameplay is suspenseful, the AI believable. The attention to detail is amazing, especially the little bits of dialog said by the characters as you stealth around. Better than the original with: level design, emphasis on human opponents (instead of undead/monsters), lots of cool gadgets, graphics Worse than the original with: some problems with the interface here and there.

Blows all other First Person Shooters out of the water!

I heard a lot of good things about the first THEIF, but when I purchased it, I was a little disapointed. As a strategy and RPG gamer, I usually don't like action titles much. But THEIF 2 changed my mind. THEIF 1 lacked a challanging AI, dealt too much with magical stuff, (what was up with those gas breathing lizards?) and had an outdated graphics engine. THEIF 2, on the other hand, has a great engine, the movement from light to dark areas is seamless. But, in my opinioin, graphics are a distant second to gameplay. My largest gripe about THEIF 1 was the incompetent AI. They would do the strangest things when they noticed you, things that were so unpredictable and downright stupid, that I likened them to the NPC AI in the Fallout series. But from what I've played so far in THEIF 2, the AI is vastly improved, making an RPG and RTS fan such as myself very happy. Guards react in a manner consistant with what a guard would do when a theif has been spotted. In the first game, they might come after you, or run off screaming, never to be heard from again. Also, I like the fact that some missions have restrictions against killing, a nice touch. The chance of a better First Person Shooter coming out this year is slim. If your system can handle the steep requirements, BUY THIS GAME. Its worth it. This game should tide me over until the release of DIABLO II & Baldur's Gate II. Once again, BUY THIS GAME. You won't be dissapointed.

THE MOST ORIGINAL ACTION GAME SINCE WOLF 3D

The most original would actually be Thief 1 but lets not quibble here. The Thief series is inspired genius. The developers at Looking Glass (R.I.P.) dared to do something new with a genre that was at that point old and cliched. An action game where you can win without killing anyone. Whoda thought it? The pitfall here is that most people think that action games without killing are no fun. LG side-stepped that beautifully. Sure its fun to put an arrow in some poor sap's neck but out-witting them instead is often more satisfying. Add a great story and original setting and you have a great game. Finally, to answer a previous reviewers question, Thief 3 is in development now but not by LG :(. Ion Storm great Warren Spector is in charge of T3's development. However, the majority of the original Thief team is working on it so it should be just as great.

Another (unfortunately final) Masterpiece From Looking Glass!

Alas poor Looking Glass, I knew ye games well...

Not only were Looking Glass Studios just terrific programmers and designers, but they were one of the few companies (very few) that created sequels that OUT-DID the originals!

Therefore, Thief 2 TMA, is a near flawless game in almost every aspect.

Good ol' Garrett is back and stealthier than ever! The best qualities that made the original so- well- original were the concepts. Sneaking, stealing, pick-pocketing, lock-picking, puzzle/problem solving, great cast, weaponary makes their glorious returns here and are improved (and fixed here and there too).

Now what makes The Metal Age (no, not 80s hair metal bands) better than The Dark Project? Well, aside from the improved weaponry and gadgets the story is more streamlined to adhere to the gameplay better. TMA was a tad over-board in the Hammerities theology deterring from the pacing of the game at times. Here, the Mechanists are a theology as well but don't slow down the pace. Not to say that it's thin on plot- it surely isn't- it has a great story as all LGS games do.

The graphics are great for the time it was released (today they look kind of "primitive") and the foley is terrific as always. It carries some of the SFX from TDP and adds more sounds and removes some of the annoying sounds from TDP too.

If I have to mention (and I do) any negatives I would say that there are a few glitches (even for the final version of 1.8) that ruin the game. I tended to get to get stuck in corners and had to restart. At times, when you're moving at the slowest pace you are still heard from half across a room. I found that ridiculous. Lastly, there is no 32bit resolution availabilty. Bummer.

Overall, this is another jewel in the small but flawless Looking Glass Studios crown.

The other 3 LGS games are:

System Shock
System Shock 2 (greatest PC game ever created)
Thief: The Dark Project

Now go get it/them Taffer!

Flawed, but still fun

I had waited eagerly for this game to be released, unfortunately my computer at the time was barely the minimal specs and it ran like a slide show on it. Only recently I have managed to upgrade my system and it is now quite playable. That being said, it tends to require a fairly high end system to play well. A P2 300 with 64 megs of RAM will not handle it all that well even if you turn all the details off, this is rather an annoyance since though the graphics are rather good they are not terribly great compared to other FPS style games of the time. Speaking of graphics, one thing that though minor became quite an annoyance for me was the fact that when characters speak their lips do not move. Almost any FPS game released at the time of Thief 2 had this feature and though minor it was sort of annoying, though it can be overlooked with the game's many better features. That being said, lets take a look at some of the better features of this game. For starters it features the same style of gameplay as the original Thief, which might be a turn-off for those who are used to the 'run-and-gun' type shooters, in Thief you are not a human tank, you are just a normal person and a single gaurd is easily capable of killing you. Rather, the goal is to sneak around them or take them down from behind (preferably silently as a death scream tends to alert others in the building). I did not find the plot as engaging as the first game, but it is still quite enjoyable. There seems to be more of a focus on human opponents and whatnot in this game, and this is a definite improvement IMO as I found some of the original's monster filled levels to be annoying in the extreme. Some of the objectives can be rather tedious and even repetitive but I still find it a thrill to crawl through the levels trying to steal as much gold, equipment, or other valuables as one possibly can. Also, there are some new twists on objectives, one being a mission wherein you break into a police station at night to frame one of the officers by stealing something from the evidence vault and leaving it in his quarters, and stealing a personal item from his office and dropping it in the evidence vault. To make matters more difficult, you can knock out or kill only five gaurds on normal difficulty, or two on hard difficulty, or none on expert. Kill or knock unconcious anymore than that and the mission is failed as they will then realize that someone must have framed him. Though it is fun right out of the box, you will definitely want to get the latest patch... as it fixes many problems, be warned those (like me) whom are limited to 56k, it is a large patch (approximately 33 megs) but worth the download. Though there are still some minor bugs... it fixes the most glaring bugs and the AI's stupidity level is far reduced with the patch. Its a shame Looking Glass Studios (Thief 2's developers) went out of business shortly after making this game as I've no doubt there would have been further patches to correct the remaining problems. In any case, it is still a very enjoyable game despite the problems and less than stellar graphics that I've mentioned.

A game created with cunning, stealth and imagination.

It is perhaps a little early for me to be reviewing Thief 2 when I am still working to complete 'The Dark Project.'(After three years I am still struggling along on the 6th level!)However, I received Thief 2 as a birthday present several weeks ago and as I pretty much expected, it is even more brilliant than the origional. Graphics, sound effects and the supurb storylines are undoubtably the reason for that. I must admit, I have never taken much of an interest in the weird and wonderful world of computer games,as the ones I have played have generally been a dissapointment. So many of them are just a matter of charging around with some extravagant machine gun and blowing up everything in your path. At last I have found a game which actually allows you to think a little. Never before has a computer game had me thinking of plots and strategies away from the screen. And never before have I been so attentive and spooked when playing on it. The other great aspect of Thief is that it is set in Medeivel times, giving the player a chance to play with different weapons and facilities besides the loud and boisterous gun. When you complete a mission (which usually takes me about six months) you really feel like you've achieved something. Thief is a truly brilliant game, completely unique and origional.Give us more!

These guys know what they are doing

Well, after playing thief, I reply this game, for people who ask "What is the best game you have ever played?". Thief is a classic, and it is not a game for faint hearted "Half-life /counter-strike" people. The game is not designed for people who run around madly with a blazing gun, dying every 10 seconds.. You have to wait, you have to look, you have to be witty and quiet while playing the game... You can turn off torches by firing a water arrow, and you can sneak through the darkness you created.. Walking on metal ground attracts guards, while walking on a carpet is the ultimate way of sneaking.. After playing this game , I am no longer afraid of darkness; as darkness will be your only ally..

Lots of changes. Some good, some not-so-good

I'll start off by saying that if you haven't yet played Thief I, then buy it and play it. Buy Thief II after that. There are some spoilers in the sequel that you don't want to see.

You can tell that the designers listened closely to the feedback from the players of Thief I. They made a lot of great improvements, which are what make Thief II worth buying. Remember the mosters and zombies from Thief I? They're gone. Most of the missions in Theif II are human-oriented. Remember those long and tediuos "needle-in-a-haystack" missions? They're gone too. The missions in Thief II are quite a bit more interesting, they are shorter, and they are easier to complete. Plus, each mission has one major goal that is something other than stealing. It's up to you to decide how much you want to pillage. For instance, in one mission your goal is to frame someone by planting evidence in his office (that mission was a blast). The guards have more of those amusing conversations that you like to listen in on -- the guards have me laughing out loud sometimes. Garrett makes his little cynical comments more often. The maps are a hundred times better and easier to use (no more getting lost). The graphics are slightly better, and there are other little improvements as well like new toys for Garret.

Some of the changes for Thief II were not so good. For one thing, the designers may have taken out the zombies, but they added in these absurd security cameras and patrolling robots. Robots? Garrett is using a bow and arrow, but there are robots patrolling around. It's just too silly to ignore. If you think it sounds lame then just wait until you actually see what they look like and sound like. In general, the technology improvements for Thief II go so overboard that they take away from the game. The medieval setting was a great part about Thief I but it's not there in Thief II.

My biggest complain about Thief II would be the overall storyline. Thief I simply had a brilliant storyline that was downright creepy and involving. I don't want to give away too much, but Thief II has some plot twists that will have you saying "come on, give me a break!" It totally lacks the overall feeling of gloom and suspense that was there for Thief I.

Still, I have liked Thief II better than Thief I. The flow of the levels must be the reason why. It took me months to complete Thief I, because I got tired of a lot of the long levels. I am almost done with Thief II in less than a couple weeks.
