Looking Glass Studios Does It Again!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 5 / 8

The developers over at Looking Glass Studios have done an excellent job bringing a sequel to one of the best games to hit the PC. By the way, it is Looking Glass Studios and not Ion Storm that developed the Thief series. Ion Storm is the developer behind Daikatana and Deus Ex. Thief II is one of the best single player games out there.

Great !

This game is an amazing twist on the standard Run-Shoot-Run First Person Shooter genre. Instead of mindless blowing up aliens ad nauseum, you get the chance to exercise your brain and inguenity, while combating guards that seem all too real.

Shocking

Honestly, I expected this game to be a cheap sequel. Ofttimes companies try to create a sequel in hopes that they will have the same luck and success which turns out pretty lame (Donkey Kong Country 3, Riven, Austin Powers 2). Often the storyline is almost exactly the same with all the same graphics, techniques, and (in Austin's case) the same jokes. (Yes, I know there are no jokes in Thief) I was surprised that the storyline actually flows quite well from the original game to this one, providing a very interesting plot. The security system is excellent, the guards are much smarter, and the lighting system is much improved as well. The levels are much more complex, with many new textures and guards (note the racial and female integration in this game). There are many different ways to beat each level, whereas in Thief, there is usually only one or two routes. I really liked how this game didn't have a whole level full of undead creatures (there were 3 in the original) Down in the Bonehoard (Level 3 in thief) got pretty monotonous. The gameplay is very smooth (unless you have an Intel 82810E graphics card), and the game overall is very enthralling and I think that anyone who's a serious gamer should buy this game (after beating thief, of course). (As with thief, if you're one of those Shoot-em-up action fans, this game is probably requires a bit too much thinking for you.)

Expansive deep sequel, arguably better than the first

I got the demo for the Lord Bafford's Mansion level of Thief: The Dark Project on a demo disc i got free at CompUSA, and after that, I was hooked. Both games in the series are intriguing, scary, and have great story lines.
The game also has an element that I'm not sure the developers had in mind: comedy. The game has some of the funniest voices and one-liners I've ever heard in a PC game, and i'm not sure if they did it intentionally. In the Lord Bafford demo, I knocked out this guy and rang an alarm bell near the end of the level, and this other guard comes in with a REALLY RASPY VOICE and asks, "Are you alright?" When getting no response several seconds later, he says "No, no, of course you're not alright. Sorry!" I couldn't stop laughing. It was just the way he said it.
There are many other funny ones, like this one guard who swung his sword at me yelling, "KNOCK YOUR TEETH OUT!" and the mechanist who yells "AHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" when he sees me (that was actually really scary too, but funny), but discover the rest for yourself. An awesome game. An awesome series. Have fun.

The O.K. Sequel to one of the best games ever

Thief 2. This game could have been genius. Instead, it just holds its own. I know that the original "Thief: The Dark Project" was not running all the latest technology when it was released orignally. In fact the graphics engine was severely lacking as opposed to the other First Person perspective games that were available at the same time, a-la Quake 2. What made it a standout though was the incredible gameplay. The stealth element did a great deal to make the player feel that he/she was in the shoes of Garett. Thief 2 is fun, but it doesn't offer enough in the way of innovations. In fact I think that the keyboard/mouse control scheme in the first Thief game were more intuitive. My second major complaint has to do with the enemies. The AI actually seemed to take a dive in this game compared to that of the first. This was not a problem with the human enemy characters, but the metalic enemies are just plain dumb and annoying. I hate it when First Person games have aliens and robots hunting me. They are much less scary than intelligent human AI. Anyway, the graphics are better, run in higher resolution, and with a better color pallet than "...The Dark Project" but these improvements do not forgive the more mediocre gameplay.

In summation: If you are looking for the best of this series, get your hands on a copy of "Thief Gold." It is "Thief: The Dark Project" but it includes a few extra levels. If you have already played the first and loved it, give "Thief 2" a try, but don't expect the sequel to impress you like the first.

The Best Game Ever!!!

I have worked in the Role Playing Game industry for about 12 years and Thief 2 is hands down the best game I have ever played. The story, the characters, game play, everything is increadible. A game like this is a rare treasure.

Awesome, game of the year!

I have to admit I didn't play the original, but am buying it now! This is easily the best game of the year, and possibly the best game of the past 5 years. The gameplay is amazingly fun and engrossing, you can sit and play for hours before realizing it. The missions are long, it takes at least 1.5 hours on just some of the early missions if you explore everything, and you really should. The graphics are stunning, every so often you just have to look at the sky, it's beautiful. Sound, which is very important in this game, is wonderful. Hiding in the shadows just listening for the time to move is part of the fun (don't have the TV, radio, or CD player turned up loud, trust me). All in all, this is an awesome game, which will keep you busy for a long time

Wow.

Wow. That is the best word to describe this game. I had Thief Gold, and when I got this, the anticipated sequel, I held the doubt that it would ever match it's predecessor in terms of challenge and fun. Wow. I am now on the 11th mission and I have to say this fits in my top 3 games list. That doubt has now been transformed into a sense of awe that Looking Glass Technologies has surpassed the original with this. Still, though, if you're going to purchase this game, make sure you have played Thief Gold first because, the plot (Amazing!) follows from it.

Great Game

I never really was into any first person game because I thought it was all senseless killing. Then I played Theif II and really got into the game. It is more than just running around slaughtering people it involves thought and skill and sneaking around as opposed to pointing and shooting. The puzzles and the difficulty levels are great and I highly recommend it

This game is an absolute masterpiece in the making. Every aspect of it was perfectly shaped so that it would make you feel as if you were Garret himself and that your life depended on whether there was something unexpected around the next corner. All I have to say is that the game is extremely difficult, and it took me nearly 3 days to pass the first level, because I was so afraid of what would happen next (Music in part). This game is an absolutely a keeper.
