The QUAKE game for thinkers

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 0 / 0
Date: May 17, 2001

For once, a thinking shooter that is well done. Some levels are too difficult though, but most are incredibly fun. This game is a slow-paced thinking game.

However, there was so little difference from the original that most people may forget they are playing Thief 2. The menu system is virtually identical, and the engine is becoming a nuisance. For example, the map is an important tool in Thief 2; switching between the map and gameplay takes a surprisingly long time...the makers should have made the map integrated right into the game.

Other than that, no complaints--well, maybe more updated graphics.

Best Single Player Game Ever Made

Thief: The Dark Project is without a doubt the best single player game ever made. Thief 2: The Metal Age is nearly as good as the original and has several of the best Thief missions (Life of the Party, Casing the Joint). If you don't already own it, buy this game.

I don't generally like or play computer games. The original Thief was a rare exception. The new Thief seems even better, and I'm only a few levels in. So far, no silly zombies or dark caves.

My one gripe is the game won't load on my laptop. It absolutely requires a 3D accelerator and DirectX version 7 compatible video card. The installer wasted about 15 minutes of my time, allowing me to load it only to find it wouldn't run. I was hoping to play this one when travelling, but it's a no go on my reasonably high end IBM 600E laptop. Thief 2 does run on my home PC with a relatively old ATI All-in-wonder Pro.

One more point on the install: I did a "full" install which ate nearly a gig of disk. Nevertheless, I still need to have the CD in the drive to play the game. I imagine this is for pirate protection, but it's still annoying.

The Thinking Man's Shooter

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 0 / 0

For those who enjoy the mindless slaughter started by Wolfenstein 3D, enhanced by Doom, and perfected by Quake, this is not the game for you. For those seeking a more cerebral experience from a shooter, this will be what you have been looking for.
A worthy follow-up to one of the most original games ever, The Metal Age finds master thief Garrett facing a formidable foe in the form of Karas and the Mechanists. The Mechanists have bought their way into high society by providing high tech servants and security for the city's upper class. In addition, Karas, the Mechanist leader, has labeled Garrett as a threat to the Mechanist "religion" and is working to see that he never draws another breath.
First of all, if you had problems getting through the first Thief, the sequel is going to frustrate you to death. The main thing I found to be problematic was the fact that the Mechanists have replaced a great deal of the torches with electric lights. This renders your water arrows nearly useless and makes concealing shadows few and far between.
Overall, if you are looking for a thinking man's game with a hefty dose of challenge, or if you were hooked on the first Thief, this is one game you shouldn't miss.

Almost as good as the amazing original

I've never played a game that I didn't find more intense and involving than Thief and Thief II. Thief II has a lot more story and many more tight spots that are difficult to get through.

If you enjoy tense atmosphere's, this game gives you a feeling of being the hunter and the hunted at the same time. This game is extremely enjoyable, but falls short of the first because of some of the later levels being a bit too hard. You can't beat it if you enjoy sneaking around.

The "Thief" series is incredible!

Few games are this original. Thief gives you that rush you get from being somewhere you're not supposed to be. The AI is some of the best I've seen in a PC game. The characters can see and hear you. They can call for help and run when wounded. The graphics are average quality, but the sound is excellent. Also, the storyline and acting are well done and entertaining. My only complaint is that the play control is sometimes buggy. Overall rating 5 stars!

A masterpiece

I immensely enjoyed Thief: The Dark Project, and this game is even better. While it's not so rare in the world of computer gaming for a sequel to be better than the original, the wizards at the now-defunct Looking Glass Studios had their work cut out for them in designing a game that would top the first Thief. All of the enjoyable elements are still here, along with a few new ones. (Garrett's bionic eye which replaced the eye he lost in TDP is especially handy with its zooming capabilities.) Add to this an excellent story and top-notch voice acting, and you've got a very slick game, one of the best available for the PC.

Creaping Figures STRIKE!

The game before and this one were both AWESOME and engaging throughout all of my last year in college. I LOVED sneaking around and if someone heard me and came a looking, I could hide and that MIGHT pass right by... then when they found nothing they would walk back assuming there was nothing lurking about, I'd BLACKJACK them from behind HA!!! MORON! My other favorite part of these games was that if you stood around one of the guards you'd hear them complain about their job or recite something from their order of almost a ministry of sorts.
"Why do I always have to work in the cold, and the dark, and the damp..."

Extremely innovative idea, kudos to Eidos.

About a year ago my friend showed me a demo of this game. The main reason he wanted to show me was to show me an argument that takes place between some gaurds. It was hilarious! Besides that, there is nothing better than leaping across a huge drop to the streets into somebodies window and robbing them blind in this game. Don't like something they own, throw it in the street. Don't like the person you just picked up, throw 'em in the street! Now realize what I am talking about is the demo(that's right, just a demo). I am still playing this demo and I have not beaten it(I am not that bad at video games either). I must say it was the most satisfying game demo I have ever played. But just so you know, I do not actually own this game, BUT I know I want to buy it right now. The only reason that I have not bought this game before was that I could not find it anywhere. Now that I have found it on Amazon.com I think I just might have to. In this game, you play a thief. You run around a city jumping from roof-top to roof-top with sword or bow in hand. I enjoyed getting in fights with guards because I could have a roof-top sword fight(just awesome). This game has very nice graphics for it's time. I would suggest this game to anyone who needs something fun to do. Try playing it on a winter night with the lights off for an authentic experience. My friend and I have thourougly(sp?) enjoyed the demo, and I suggest that you go and try it yourself. . I hope you are lucky enough to get hooked on the game. Here is a tip, don't read the book in the Necromancer Tower, or do, whatever. Enjoy this game, because I just know everyone out there is going to go dish out 20.00 dollars for this game now. Now if you will excuse me, I'm going to go play the demo some more.

This game has it. Most sequels to games really blow big time but not this one. The story line is fluid and not at all boring and has kept me down in my basement playing late into the night. I am not a person that is easily impressed by games but thief has kept me very happy. There are even times in the game where i had to get up and walk away because i was shaking. Watch out for the tree beasts "ents" because i stood in front of one until it came to life and it still freaked me out. Its a good thing that invisibility potions are out there because I jumped high in my chair when the thing charged at me. This game is really worth it.
