Falling short of my expectations

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 4 / 5

I bought OBI-WAN the day it came out expecting something out of this world...no pun intended. The graphics are mediocre at best. The PS1 and N64 could run similar graphics without all the rich detail in the background. The sound, however, is another story. I have the system hooked up to a 5.1 Yamaha Digital Dolby receiver and the sound is incredible. The sound actually travels fully around you. Whether it's Qui-Gon speaking to you or a battle droid firing, you can tell from what direction it's coming from. The gameplay was simple enough and easy to learn. Both my nine year old son and I were able to finish the entire game in just about 20 hours of playing, leaving only the finished levels to do over or battle eachother one-on-one in the Jedi arenas, which is fun at first but gets real boring real fast. I definitely recommend you rent this one before buying...I wish I had.

Hey,..... Could Have Been Better !!!!!

Obi Wan is a great hack n' slash game like "Jedi Power Battles" (PsOne) or the adventure/ puzzle feel of The Tomb Raider games (PsOne)!!! Don't get me wrong good game but, PsOne type graphics!!! How the Xbox can produce graphics this bad, just amazes me when I see games like Halo 2 or The Cronicles of Riddick!!! I can't believe I bought this for $50 when it first came out.... good grief!!!

Hey, now their selling it for only $19.99 since it was a Platinum Hit, if a game is at that status it's usually a good sign!!! Well, Knights of the Old Republic is the same price though,.... really if you had a choice between the two which one would you pick!!! This isn't the best game out their and is now forgotten by many, but is a good piece of hidden treasure!!!

Well, their may be some bad graphics and some chessy voice overs, but it is still a solid game filled with some fun gameplay!!! It may not look like much when you first see it but, once you start playing through the game it kind of get addictied!!! The game is a little too easy, and could have been worked out better!!! Gosh I thought the battle with Darth Maul on the last level was going to actually be hard and well it ends up being the easiest one to me!!! It didn't take much time to beat it, I say just rent it, beat it and move on!!! Well, the only multiplayer thing is the arena!!! Which was kind of neat but, after about 3 times of playing that I was bored!!!

Anyways, I liked the variety of puzzles, hack n' slash action, along with some sweet force powers!!! You go from fighting gangs, to miner, to sand people, to droids, ..... you see their is alot of depth and detail in level design!!! If this was released on the PsOne this would have been awesome!!! As you look at other games, you see their really isn't much that boosts the gameplay up, it's nothing special!!! It is fun though, I'll give it that, but this isn't an Xbox quality game!!!

If you can get this game cheap, be free to buy it, but this is not worth $50, not by a long shot!!! So if you've tried out every other Star Wars game and are looking for something different you should probably rent it!!! This game is for hardcore Star Wars or hack n' slash laid back adventure fans!!!

Overall, I will give this a 3/5...... not the best made game, but still is fun some what!!!

Pros:
-Fun single player mode
-Awesome level designs
-Creative story somewhat, fun missions
-Jedi Power Battles and Tomb Raider all in one package

Cons:
-Yawn....nothing I haven't seen before
-Lousy graphics
-Way too easy
-Chessy graphics

Overall:

3/5 6.7/10

Comments/Questions:

This was actually the first Star Wars game released on the Xbox, so you have to give the game that too!!!

Yoda himself couldn't save this game

This was a woeful attempt (at best) to capitalize on the release of Episode II. LucasArts could and should have spent much more time developing this game. The best part of the game is the training mode. It is all downhill from there. The graphics are Genesis like (my apologies to Sega). This game completely missed all that the X-Box is about. The X-Box is the best console available, period. Yet, Obi Wan is a COMPLETE failure. The music is horrendous. The plot is sketchy. The player control and camera angles are horrific. And, again, the graphics are just short of atrocious. I could have made a better video game with a paper clip and stick of chewing gum. Thankfully, I rented Obi Wan before considering a purchase. I played it once and returned it. It was that bad. I have only purchased two games for the X-Box: Halo and Outlaw Golf. World Series Baseball and Knock-Out Kings are also Excellent and Hunter the Reckoning and UFC aren't bad. But, getting back to Obi Wan, it is a cataclysmic stretch to say that this game is worth purchasing (new or used). RENT IT FIRST!!! My guess is that you would rather have rented the Little Mermaid but give it a try before purchasing the game. TRUST ME. You will be glad that you saved your money for something else. There is a reason there are 1000 used copies for sale on E-bay.

Not bad, but not great.

Well, I purchased this game used for about $5 and don't regret it. As a matter of fact I'd probably pay as much as $20 for it. Since this game isn't new anymore people won't be paying $49.99 for it and that's a good thing. On the upside it's a lot of fun to play as a jedi. I really enjoyed being able to use the force powers and fight with a lightsaber. It's just too bad that the graphics, sound and story suck.

I really can't comprehend why a game made for the X-Box would look this bad. These are the kind of graphics that are found on a Nintendo 64. The actual sound effects themselves aren't really all that bad, but don't stand out either. The voice acting is almost painful to listen to. Every time I heard Obi-Wan say a line, I cringed. He sounds almost as bad as I do trying to fake a Scottish accent. The story is pretty forgetful. Often I would even forget about why I was in a situation slicing everything to bits with my lightsaber.

Overall this game isn't too bad and I think a lot of people would enjoy it. Just don't go in with your expectations set too high.

Better than most think.

This game was severely underrated. in a certain magazine, they stated that the control was clunky and irresponsible, the character models were blocky and jerky and the load times were longer than Jar-Jars ears. What are these people smoking? Just cause the developers didn't get every little detail right doesn't mean it isn't an awesome game. I think the controls are perfect, they control every one of Obi-Wans actions responsively and fluidly. while the animation and graphics do leave a little bit to be desired, they aren't awful(certainly better than Zeldas graphics). The force powers are awesome and the acrobatics are sweet. But, best of all are the one-on-one matches between you and the Jedi council that occur every few missions. Its worth beating the game just to get to them(try the battal royale for a real challenge. Yes, the voice overs may be hilarious and the action can get so hectic it sometimes slows down, this is still a great reason to own an x-box. unless you have to have everyting in your games perfect, you'd be a fool to pass this one up.

Obi-Wan - Great fun marred by poor graphics

Obi-Wan, a game that could have been a 5-star title, never attains greatness due to its subpar graphics engine. Apparently, the game uses a modified version of the 5-year-old Jedi Knight engine, and the engine's age really shows with this game. Models of characters have hidious textures, and the low polygon count is really apparent. Not to mention that the framerate often drops below 30fps, which is unacceptable for a game with graphics such as this.
On the bright side, the game is incredibly fun and action packed, even more fun than the recently released graphically superior "Jedi Knight 2". You will likely never get bored mastering the use of your lightsaber and various Force powers, and this excellent gameplay is what saves the game, making it a worthwhile purchases. Recommended.

This game is tight!

This Star Wars game is cool and all, but the one thing about is that the story line is the same over and over again. What I mean by that is all you do in that game is.....run, jump, kill battle droid, run, jump, kill battle droid! It's the same thing over and over again. But all in all it should be a pretty good game

Ok game, terrible graphics

I sure expected a lot more from this game than what it offers. The game itself is ok but the graphics are terrible. This game was obviously not built from the ground up to take advantage of the Xbox. Rather, Lucas just took an existing graphics engine and packaged it as a new game. I'm suprised that Microsoft allowed this game to be one of the early Xbox titles. With so many other games that have good gameplay and fantastic graphics, I just don't understand why this one was released except as a fill in until other Star Wars games come out. With the power of the Xbox this game could have been fantastic if it was built to be a top notch game like Halo. Instead we are left with a ok game and 1995 type graphics for the same money that a game such as Halo costs.

Outstanding! One of the best Star Wars games ever

I am very much impressed with OBI-WAN. I had a lot of expectation for it, and it was the game I wanted to the most on XBOX (even more than HALO). I am happy to say this game delivers on all fronts. It's exactly what I wanted.

This is the Star Wars game I've been waiting for. The ability to control a Jedi Knight, use the Force to push, pull, and everything else, is, seriously, a dream come true.

The GRAPHICS are awesome. There is great detail and fluid animation. The locations are great. I love being on Coruscant, Naboo, Trade Federation ships. The stage design is really good. They are varied and pretty big.

The SOUNDTRACK is excellent. The music sounds just like it did in the movie, using mostly TPM music but also some of the Luke Trilogy. The sound effects are pretty close to being dead-on. If you have Dolby Digital you're in for a real treat.

The CONTROL is solid. There's a little breaking-in period with the control since you have double-function when the Force is activated, but you'll catch on soon enough. There's a lot of moves at your disposal and the controller does a good job making it easy to pull off. I found the default control set up to be good.

The DIFFICULTY is good. Not easy to pull off, since many games are either way too hard or way too easy. Since this game has no difficulty setting, it was crucial that it be a right balance. I'm glad to say that it is good. OBI-WAN is not a walk in the park, but it's not impossible either.

The ACTION is awesome! If you think running around with a lightsaber and hacking up Battle Droids (and other enemies) is cool, then you really have no excuse not to get this. There are even lightsaber duels with other Jedi Knights -- and even Maul.

I can't say enough good things about this game. I am thrilled with it. An absolute must-buy.

A decent Star Wars game

A great game with lots of lightsaber fun. There are some glitches that bring the game down though. For example, if you fell off a cliff Obi-Wan would scream after he died. Also, the game gets extremely hard in later levels.
