A really fun game that helps a young girl rely on her mind.

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 4

I bought this game for my ten year old daughter and we played it every night after school/work. (At her request and instead of T.V.) It proved to be very challenging for both of us and gave us about 30 hours of father/daughter fun before we solved it. We also both learned a lot about logic, reasoning, problem solving and about interesting subjects such as ancient runes, astronomy, latin, alchemy, and the list goes on. There are two levels of difficulty. The easier of the two, which gives you more hints and some less stringent tasks, is probably designed for girls from around 9 to 12 years old. The harder-probably for 13 and older (including parents!) All in all, in a world where computer games either completely lack any redeeming qualities or are so "educational" that they become boring after the first ten minutes, this game, and likely the whole Nancy Drew collection, are worth every penny you spend on them.

The real curse is this game...

The Crime: C

Nancy is invited to Blackmoor Manor in merry old England to check on the new wife of a British diplomat. The woman has apparently become sick shortly after her new marriage. Rumors abound that the Beast of Blackmoor is creeping around, along with a family witch.

Suspects include Linda's stepdaughter Jane Penvellyn, scholar Nigel Mookerjee, batty old Mrs. Drake, and Jane's tutor Ethel Bosinny.

The villain and the Penvellyn treasure were both RIDICULOUS. All that threatening atmosphere and chilling spookiness wasted on such silly things.

Puzzles: C

Argh! Just aargh! So many of them! And so tedious they were! The premise is that the Penvellyn family has a long and illustrious history of being geniuses of one kind or another. Each member of the family studied a certain subject, such as computers or astronomy. And they all left clues for future generations to a great hidden treasure (there it is again). The clues are all crazily scattered all over the manor, hidden in Latin crests and books and alchemical symbols.

You also have to talk to an 80-year-old parrot to solve one puzzle. The family trusted a huge and important secret partly to a parrot that could keel over at any moment. (Yes, they live a long time, but not every parrot lives so long.)

Other silly details include a revolving room and a strange map that somehow tracks your progress through an area, even though GPS wasn't invented way back when.

They could have left out the anacronistic map, sure, but then we would have been in serious trouble. The gamers needed all the help they could get in this game. The puzles just kept going and going. The game was long and involved.

Gameplay: C

Nancy is supposedly in England and we aren't allowed to see a single bit of the English countryside. Why? Because Mrs. Drake doesn't want us tracking mud through the house. If I came a thousand miles to another country, nobody would stop me from taking a look outside! This game didn't even have to be set in England. It could have taken place in Salem, Mass. just as easily. (Of course, the Penvellyn family wouldn't have been as old then.)

I couldn't trigger some events in the game no matter how carefully I played or what walkthrough I followed. I ended up downloading saved games from other people to get past these parts of the game. It lessened the quality of the gameplay for me, to say the least.

One thing I loved were Jane's mini-games. Sometimes I open the game just to play Skull and Bones.

Time Changes: The alarm clock is back. Argh!

Voice Acting: B

Jane is a cute, cultured little English girl. Ethel got on my nerves, appearing out of nowhere and looking down her nose at me. Linda irritated me, her voice and character. I mean, I realize you're depressed, but I flew a thousand miles to help you, so I'd appreciate it if you'd just answer my questions instead of clamming up, okay, lady?

The cockney rhyming slang was extra cool, though.

Music: A

Very restrained and classical. Chilling and spooky when it needed to be.

IGraphics/Video: A

Jane in particular was weirdly animated. All joints and long legs. I think she was too thin.

Other than that, the graphics were the best yet. Bonus points for the smooth animated sequences in between player-controlled action.

Technical: C

Along with the problem I had triggering events, I had another glitch in the game. When ordering food from the restaurant, it would appear on a silver platter in my room. But, after that, I could never get other food to be delivered, no matter how long I waited or how many times I asked for it. Every time I lifted the lid, it would always be the first thing I had ordered.

Overall, it was a good game, but it's definitely not my favorite.

The mystery game, The Curse of Blackmoor Manor, is truly a fun and entertaining game. But you must realize that when it says. 'For adventerous girl's 10 and up.' You should really pay attention. Very suspensful and anticipating. You need a lot of logic to figure out the many puzzels. Make sure that you would not be scared because at parts, the game made me jump out of my skin!

A pretty good game, not as good as the rest though

This game is pretty suspensful and the animation and characters are great, also with some pretty odd suspects as well! lol. Someone is trying to scare Linda Pennvlynn out of their england manor, for something that is supposed to be hidden on blackmoor. Search secret rooms and solve the mystery in time. The puzzles were very hard and many times I was at a stuck point but it was a good game. Out of all the games my fourth favorite. If you like a good challenge get this game

Awesome Game!

I loved this game even though it was challenging! If you like scary, challenging, fun, and gripping games you'll love this! Out of the Nancy Drew games I've played this is my 2nd favorite!

The CURSE of Blackmoor Manor

This game was challenging, and I loved it. It was not challenging in the sense where SECRET OF THE SCARLETT HAND was challenging (where you had to read and learn everything), but in the sense were you have to figure out the puzzles with the bits of information you had and if you couldn't figure it out you may as well stick with the rest of the Nancy Drew Series. I am glad HER is making the series grow with the players. I have played all of the ND games including the ones after this and this one is still my favorite. To those that say it disappointed them because it had witchcraft, and stupid things like horriscopes, what did you expect from buying a game called "CURSE of Blackmoor Manor". I mean seriously, last time I checked alchemy was a science not "witchcraft". I do admit the surprise at 3:15 was a little akward, but merley a scare tactic for players. It wasn't witchcraft either it was simply Jane puring oil through pipes(maybe it had something to do with unlocking another family secret) that's what her family passed down, secrets, not devil worship. Also, in other ND games thay have had ghosts, tarot cards ,psychics, and other "spooky" things. If your not comfortable enough with your religion to realize that not everyone realizes the "truth" then I'm sorry your close minded views should be enough to lock you in a closet with a bible and a lit candle. I'm not here to debate the views or beliefs of others, but to praise this game for its great features. If your an intelligent teenager or older, who loves a good mystery/adventure game and can withstand learning a little about alchemy then buy it. It is well worth the money.

Deliciously Thrilling, Demanding Brainwork!

If you haven't tried any of the Nancy Drew computer games, you should at least try one. All of them demand brainwork and puzzle-solving skills. Extremely addicting, I just can't seem to get enough of these games. From the early ones, to the latest game. Anyways, Curse of Blackmoor Manor might not be a good place to start, because I think it was by far the hardest of them all. There are many puzzles, and although you can get hints from a few people, well... you might find that the hints are a puzzle within itself. The thing is, I love getting my brain worked up. In the game, you are Detective Nancy Drew, trying to find out what is wrong with a seemingly normal person (Linda) but wait. Many people stand in your way! Jane, a young girl is always asking you to play games. Is she just a playful young girl, or is she preventing your sleuthing? Nigel seems awfully shady, what with typing a "best-seller in the making" all day. Is he looking for the famed "Penvellyn treasure"? Mrs. Drake is a botanist, who might have gone finally batty after all the years. Speaking to plants, and ignoring all else, is she plotting something, or is she just a dedicated botanist? Ethel, Jane's young tutor has some ideas that will cross paths with you. Is she planning to go on with the Penvellyn tradition, and cross your path? Or will she let you slip by unnoticed? Is there truly a beast of Blackmoor, out to get you? Or is it just a legend? This game is pleasantly thrilling, and gives you ideas for solving puzzles overnight, making you jump up out of bed and make you long for switching on your computer at midnight.

NANCY DREW ROCKS!!

This one is the best next to Tresuare in a Royal tower! I love it how this one is really scary, and all the secrets the people at the manor hide. Ok, the story is, is that a woman who just got married, won't come out of her room, won't talk to anyone and is acting strange. So the owner of the manor calls Nancy Drew, and then the adventure begins! Recommended for all ages... If you dare!
