Looking Back, Dissapointed

You know, I hate to give a so-so review to a game series I truly love, but I must say Mystery 11: Curse of Blackmoor Manor is sub-par. I was looking forward to this title, as my two favorite games are Message in a Haunted Mansion and Treasure in the Royal Tower, and a similar setting gave me very high hopes. However, there were only a handful of rooms to explore, each one seeming to be from an entirely different time period. This mis-mash greatly detracted from the cohesiveness of the game.

The actual gameplay is much like the previous installments, complete with many perplexing puzzles to keep you intregued throughout the game. As a few other reviewers have noted, this game is very linear, meaning you must finish specific tasks before the game progresses, which diminished the feeling of being a true detective.

The biggest complaint I have, though, is what I, as Nancy Drew, am really trying to do. The overall theme of the adventure is simply not important. No one's life is at stake, there's no ancient secret to uncover, and it doesn't really matter whether or not you solve the mystery. The ending is horribly anti-climactic, and I walked away from the game with a feeling of wasted hours of my life.

Challenging, Scary, and Fun

I have played all 13 Nancy Drew games that are currently out, and this is one of the scariest, if not THE scariest. There are many puzzles and I found myself stuck frequently, which is why I gave this 4 stars instead of 5. However, each time I was able to get out of whatever the problem was. It was still frustrating though. Unless you are very optimistic about your gameplay, the first time you play, play on the Junior Detective level instead of Senior Detective. This is a very hard game -- if you are buying a Nancy Drew mystery game for somebody about 10 years old, you probably should go with one of the earlier games that is less scary (Message in a Haunted Mansion is a good one to start with ... I wouldn't recommend Secrets can Kill and Stay Tuned for Danger, they were the first two games ever made and the graphics are poor. Anything after that is good). These games are all fun and worth the money, I think, and personally I can't wait for more of them to come out. After you have played several of them, it is fun to go back and play them again -- while you still remember the bad guy in the end and sometimes where there are secret passageways and things, you don't remember all of the details (or at least I didn't!). Good luck!

Hard but Fun!

I am surprised at the number of mediocre reviews for this splendid game.I loved it! I am rather amused at the "10 years old and up" on the cover..they had probably no idea that "up" in one case at least is aged 76, me- and that's really up.

The graphics are very fine. The puzzles are hard and you are obliged to play several games with the little girl in the story, Jane, in order to obtain certain tools to proceed. These games within the game did get a bit tedious, but I am was hopelessly slow at "Petroglyph Punch" and the like. And it took me five tries to gather up 13 ghosts milling around the manor. When something is timed I panic. I'm like my cats who vanish if I even look at the door where the vacuum cleaner is kept.

The voice acting is very good, and if the British accents aren't authentic, so what. The images of the characters are very well done, the gestures and mouth synchronization very natural. Mrs. Drake is particularly good, she's rather like a watered down version of Mrs. Danvers.

I could not have finished this game without the help of a walkthrough. The puzzles are hard. But the fact that I always cheat like mad doesn't bother me ar all and I never have felt that the game is spoiled one whit with the heavy use of a walkthrough. If you can finish this game without assistance, more power to you. But take it from an old lady- this game is fun and if you have to sweat a bit here and there, that's part of the whole adventure game enchilda.

well...

The best I can say about this game is that the graphics were really good, it was a great plot, and the scary parts were cool.

Okay, ready for some negativity, because you're going to get it!

But first things first. Let's go over what Herinteractive promised with CUR.

"Play alone or with friends and family."
This is one of the true statements. Yes, this is a very good game to play with other people. Also, because this game is so incredibly hard, multiple heads are A WHOLE LOT BETTER then one.

"Over 25 hours of spellbinding game play."
Absolutely, positively NOT. This game, without the strategy guide or help from online, could take some up to a month or more, I swear. It's frustrating!!!

"Enhanced challenges with two difficulty settings."
More like "impossible challenges that you can't solve without help". The difficulty settings thing is crap. The only thing that's different is there is no "to do" list. That's it. That's not even necsesary!!!

"Suspects move, sleep and interact according to game time schedules."
Okay, this is partly true as well. If you're up in the middle of the night, everyone is asleep, if you're up during the day, everyone's up. That's it.

"Forgiving ""Second Chance" option erases blunders and rookie mistakes."
It doesn't "erase" them, it just starts over from right before you made the mistake. Don't take "Second Chance" to mean that you only get two chances to do something. You could kill yourself 30 times and still be able to try it again.

The ending was crap, too, so after looking at all this, you're going to think "is it really worth it to buy this game". Well, it is, despite what I said, on many levels, but I'm too lazy to tell them all. Anyway, if this is your first Nancy Drew game, get an earlier game first, like The Final Scene or The Haunted Carousel. They are a little bit easier, and once you get better at them, you can try out CUR for yourself. Also, if you scare easy, don't play this game alone at night. You'll thank me later.

I got this game as soon as it game out, and it is the best game I ever played! It was more thrilling than all of the other Nancy Drew games. Curse of Blackmoor Manor also had great, not to mention interesting, characters.

I have played all the Nancy Drew games and feel this one is the poorest of the set. Most of the clues are obscure and don't help much. Another problem with the game is that it is very sequential. If you don't do things at the exact time or in an exact order, you either can't progress through the game, or in some cases it requires a re-start of a saved game. I would highly recommend a stratagy guide or walkthrough with this game. On good thing, HerInteractive has a web site and message board that is VERY helpful. I didn't find the game scary or delving too deeply in the occult. Also, the characters in the game are stilted and annoying, especially the talking parrot and the little girl. If you haven't played the other Drew games, play them first.

This is the first game I was able to play with little help from a walkthrough. My family has two computers: I played this game on mine and my 8yo and 12yo played it on theirs. It was fun to be able to help each other when needed.

The game does get a bit creepy in some scenes, but my kids loved the bird. The puzzles weren't too difficult that they couldn't be solved. Jane's games were also fun to play with. The best thing about that is when you got stuck, you could take a break at any time and play a game with Jane (when she was awake and not studying).

It was also interesting how certain scenes were shown on my game that weren't shown on my kids game and vice versa. Sometimes the same scenes we saw on the different games would be shown at different points in the game as well. For example, in my daughter's game she saw both nightmares, whereas I only saw one. She also got scolded by Jane's tutor early in her game, while I got scolded late in the game.

The graphics were slightly better than the older Nancy Drew games and the music was not so ominous. While Nancy's friends weren't there to help, web browsing on the cell phone helps a lot with many of the puzzles. There is also a little bit of comedy in the game: Polly always has something witty to say and you also get to scare Nigel in the library.

Overall, this game is great to play with your kids.

i have played all of the nancy drew games before and was really looking foward to this one. but it turned out to be a big disapointment. it is NOT that scary, and it leaves too many unanswered questions after you solve the mystery. there is so many puzzles that you have to figure out that after awhile you forget what the purpose of the puzzle was. the manor could have had alot more rooms to explore, and you only got to talk to some of the characters a few times. hopefully the next game, the secret of the old clock, will be much better!
