Her Interactive's series continues with this latest entry, another one taken from one of the classic books. This one is on the scary side, with mysterious noises, dark tunnels, ominous warnings, and a plethora of creepies that all strike at 3:15 a.m., for some reason.

Be forewarned, however: This game is harder than the others, with more difficult puzzles and fewer in-game hints available. (Neither of Nancy's hint-spewing friends is available, which in some ways is a good thing -- their hints were usually vague and their personalities annoying.) You may very well need a walkthrough to manage all the puzzles, especially if you don't play a lot of these games.

Game play is smooth and intelligent, as always. Graphics are charming and clear, without being masterpieces. The writing and acting are fine, though the not-quite-convincing English voices get a little old. Interface is simple and intuitive, as with all the ND games.

Ingenious and gripping. More, more!

I read all of the Nancy Drew books when I was a kid, so I was intrigued when I saw that there are now computer games based on the books. Although I'm now 35, I decided to purchase a few and see how I liked them (I figured that if they were too "childish" for me, I could always give them to my niece...). However, that was not to happen, as I absolutely love playing them!

One of the best features of these games is that there's several levels to choose from - beginner to expert - and this will allow you to decide just how hard you want the game to be. The difference between the levels is the number & type of hints you get along the way.

This particular game is one of my favorites. It was actually quite difficult, and so I found it to be a wonderful challenge. The graphics are excellent, and you really get that mysterious feeling as you traverse this old, spooky castle.

If you liked reading Nancy Drew, you'll absolutely love playing these games! They are great for kids and adults alike. However, regardless of your age, if you haven't played too many Nancy Drew games, I'd recommend that you go with the beginner level for this game - if not, you may get frustrated quite easily.

Nancy Drew as an interactive game works because of the good mystery and graphics associated with the game. Enter Blackmoor Manor and you enter a labyrinth of detailed halls and rooms. There are ghosts, mysterious characters, and danger lurking everywhere you turn. Slower than games geared toward boys, but great for girls.

Playing Nancy Drew detective games has recently become a time consuming habit of mine, and all the games in the past (except for the first) were really interesting, addictive, and fun. "The Curse of Blackmoor Manor" was a great story, but the puzzles, time limits and continuity was not very good.
I know that the production of this game was actually rushed because there was such a high demand for it, which is maybe why it ended up being disappointing. The story was the spookiest and most supernatural of all the rest, and that was an excellent move by Her Interactive. I played on "Senior Detective" level, which is the step up from Junior. If you have never played adventure games before than be ready to play at Junior level because there are many tough requirement you wil have to pass on Senior. I am very good at typing and pc gaming, so I think that is why I was able to pass a certain test/puzzle in the game that looks like it would be very difficult if I were not.
I only recommend buying this game if you are used to Nancy Drew games and are advanced at puzzles and gaming. Try "Message in a Haunted Mansion" or "Secret of the Scarlett Hand" instead.

Blackmoor Manor

I did enjoy The Curse of Blackmoor Manor very much. The setting is nice, and the alchemy tie-in was especially intriguing. I agree with some of the other reviewers that there was too little ground to explore. Mrs. Drakes's room and the kitchen both feel like teases. It definitely would have been nice to be able to leave the grounds, to go to the pub that provides Nancy's food, for instance, or to be able to go outside at the least. I disliked having to spend so much time in the main hall.

Otherwise, the game was fun and engaging, with especially good atmosphere.

Fun and challenging

This was the first Nancy Drew game I played and it got me hooked. My husband was walking by during one of the puzzles I was trying to solve and he sat down to see what it was about and ended up playing the entire game with me. We both found this game to be very challenging and addictive. This is a great game for all ages although it might be a little scary for some youngsters.

One thing that we found amusing about this game was a little hidden text. There is a challenge where you will go downstairs to a room (kind of like a lab) and read some letters and notes. This is towards the end of the game. The main part you are supposed to read is darker than the rest of the text. If you strain and read the lighter text, you will see some interesting things there. It's been a while since we played it so I don't remember the exact text but it had to do with views towards the current president. We thought it was amusing that the writer/programmer put that in there.

Overall a great game with some difficult puzzles.

Having grown up on Nancy Drew mystery books, I lept on the very first ND computer game, and have looked forward to each new one over the years like cherished visits from an old friend.

The Curse of Blackmoor Manor has had the most challenging puzzles to date (I was forced, at one point, to start the game over in Jr. Detective mode to figure one of them out) and the graphics are rich and wonderful. My only complaint is that you are completely restricted to the manor house. I would have loved to have been able to prowl around the darkened grounds of the centuries old manor!

To make up for this single flaw, they'va also included some interesting hidden passageways (naturally :-) and several slightly spooky moments (although I would have loved a bunch more!)

There are some interesting puzzles and conversations in this game. You can always appreciate the quality of characters, voice acting, and sound effects, in all the Nancy Drew games.

I found parts of it to be frustrating and annoying (but I muddled through it).

It was fun to see puzzles from past games integrated in new ways in this game. I liked the 'creepy' sound effects, etc. Don't worry, it's not really scary. Myself, I prefer the ND games with scenic outdoor settings that let you 'move' around from place to place.

This game is so cool! I'm am 11 years old, and I am a boy. Ever sence my grandma gave me a Nancy Drew game, I started to get one after an other. Now I've got every one of them. Numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13, and 14. They are all so cool. The sad thing is, is that when I got every one of them so quick I've got to keep on waiting every year until the next one comes out. So, what i've been doing is, getting different kind of games untill the next Nancy Drew comes out. I've been starting to get some C.S.I games. They are really cool too! Right now i'm waiting to get the 15th Nancy Drew game( The creature of Kapu cave). Just to tell everybody, this game is rated EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!! Which means it is not a game just for girls! Even if it was, then who cares? Just like girls say, they can do anything that boys can do.So, if we turned the phrase around then it would show my point. This is the first of the Nancy Drew PC mysteries that I've played. It was so addictive. I do recommend that you are used to a role playing / puzzle solving game format to play it. The plot line is interesting, and the puzzles are not too easy. It took me a while to solve it, but it was very satisfying. I like that you can get hints from characters in the game if you're having trouble. There are a few ways you can "die" and have the game end, but not too many. I like that the time progression in the game allows for different things to happen. If you like mysteries, then definitely try this game!
