Her Interactive's series continues with this latest entry, another one taken from one of the classic books. This one is on the scary side, with mysterious noises, dark tunnels, ominous warnings, and a plethora of creepies that all strike at 3:15 a.m., for some reason.
Be forewarned, however: This game is harder than the others, with more difficult puzzles and fewer in-game hints available. (Neither of Nancy's hint-spewing friends is available, which in some ways is a good thing -- their hints were usually vague and their personalities annoying.) You may very well need a walkthrough to manage all the puzzles, especially if you don't play a lot of these games.
Game play is smooth and intelligent, as always. Graphics are charming and clear, without being masterpieces. The writing and acting are fine, though the not-quite-convincing English voices get a little old. Interface is simple and intuitive, as with all the ND games.
Ingenious and gripping. More, more!
A worthy challenge

Having grown up on Nancy Drew mystery books, I lept on the very first ND computer game, and have looked forward to each new one over the years like cherished visits from an old friend.
The Curse of Blackmoor Manor has had the most challenging puzzles to date (I was forced, at one point, to start the game over in Jr. Detective mode to figure one of them out) and the graphics are rich and wonderful. My only complaint is that you are completely restricted to the manor house. I would have loved to have been able to prowl around the darkened grounds of the centuries old manor!
To make up for this single flaw, they'va also included some interesting hidden passageways (naturally :-) and several slightly spooky moments (although I would have loved a bunch more!)
I need more time!

** TWO STARS.
[I had written a review of this game a couple days ago, giving it only one star. But, I'm rewriting my review and I'm unable to change the rating scale.]
I had the same problem with Blackmore Manor that I've had with a few other Nancy Drew game - inability to finish the game because of the timed puzzles. Everytime I play N.D. games, I select the "Senior Detective" level - which is probably a big mistake. I always seem to have difficulty completing timed puzzles. I guess my old (closer to 50 than 40) hands just don't have quick enough reflexes to accomplish these puzzles. With the Blackmore Curse, my first problem came in the form of a typing test. The player needs to take the test and achieve a high enough score to obtain a clue - without which, the game cannot progress. I don't know what score was needed, but the best I could do was 25wpm - "Not good enough!" In order to get past this, I uninstalled the game and then reinstalled it. My old saves were not deleted with the uninstall so when I restarted the game, I chose "Junior Detective" and loaded up my last saved game from the first install. This actually worked and I was able to take the test again and achieve a high enough score to obtain the clue and continue on with the game.
Unfortunately, when I was almost at the end of the game there was another timed puzzle (going to three locations and touching certain objects with a wand) within a very short amount of time. I tried this over and over and over without success. Therefore, I was unable to complete the last couple of tasks and finish the game. I had the same problem at the very end of Shadow Ranch and on one of the games in Deception Island. I know in one of the earliest games Her Interactive had a patch available for download to allow extra time to finish the final puzzle - even with the extra time I couldn't finish that game. Apparently, I'm hopeless in these games.
The sad thing is that I really enjoyed everything that came before this stopping place in Blackmore Manor. The (untimed) puzzles were more challenging than previous games and a haunted mansion is a great setting for a game. But this is the fourth time I couldn't finish a Nancy Drew game. I don't think I'll be buying anymore.
Not As Good As The Rest

Playing Nancy Drew detective games has recently become a time consuming habit of mine, and all the games in the past (except for the first) were really interesting, addictive, and fun. "The Curse of Blackmoor Manor" was a great story, but the puzzles, time limits and continuity was not very good.
I know that the production of this game was actually rushed because there was such a high demand for it, which is maybe why it ended up being disappointing. The story was the spookiest and most supernatural of all the rest, and that was an excellent move by Her Interactive. I played on "Senior Detective" level, which is the step up from Junior. If you have never played adventure games before than be ready to play at Junior level because there are many tough requirement you wil have to pass on Senior. I am very good at typing and pc gaming, so I think that is why I was able to pass a certain test/puzzle in the game that looks like it would be very difficult if I were not.
I only recommend buying this game if you are used to Nancy Drew games and are advanced at puzzles and gaming. Try "Message in a Haunted Mansion" or "Secret of the Scarlett Hand" instead.

I did enjoy The Curse of Blackmoor Manor very much. The setting is nice, and the alchemy tie-in was especially intriguing. I agree with some of the other reviewers that there was too little ground to explore. Mrs. Drakes's room and the kitchen both feel like teases. It definitely would have been nice to be able to leave the grounds, to go to the pub that provides Nancy's food, for instance, or to be able to go outside at the least. I disliked having to spend so much time in the main hall.
Otherwise, the game was fun and engaging, with especially good atmosphere.

many interesting objects to look at,thrilling game play that will keep you hooked on it until you win and even then you'll want to play it many more times to come , some scary parts, but don't worry you'll love it,and many challenging puzzles, last ,but defanitely not least, you can actually learn information in this game! Such as the following:

Ok I played this game and it was OK in the beginning but as you progress through the game it gets very boring and I admit the puzzles were kind of purplexing but not as hard as Her Interactive reported it being and it was also NOT as scary as Her Interactive said it would be either... So my conclusion is that The Curse of Blackmoor Manor was a cheesy game, and you SHOULD think twice before purchasing this game from Amazon or anywhere else... If you want a scary Nancy Drew Software Game than I reccomend either The Final Scene or The Message in the Haunted Mansion...
"Curse" is cursed to be a huge success!

When I first played the Curse of Blackmoor Manor, I didn't know what to expect. But once I started, I simply could not turn the computer off! I loved it. It had intrigue, challenge, and fun. It was nice to play a challenging game that didn't involve shooting zombies or racing cars. So here's what the game is about.
You play the role of Classic Girl Detective, Nancy Drew. As such, you are involved in a rather hairy mystery. I mean scary. Scary mystery. See, a friend of the family has asked you to figure out why her daughter is acting so strangely. You fly out to England (yes, ENGLAND!) to Blackmoor Manor to visit Linda Penvellyn and the Penvellyn family. Linda claims to be sick and refuses to see anyone, even though her mother says she is perfectly fine. But you learn of an ancient myth regarding the manor saying that there is a beast, like a werewolf, that terrorizes the manor, and people suspect that Linda may be turning INTO this monster. Its up to you as Nancy Drew to solve this mystery once and for all so that Linda can get well soon!
This game has fun challenging puzzles, interesting characters, and funny dialogue. Definitely two thumbs up!
bound to be a success

first off, i dont have this game yet, but from what i heard from all the people who had played it, it's bound to be great. More challaging puzzles, and supposedly it is the scariest Nancy Drew game yet. I say 'supposedly' because since i havent played it yet, i'm not sure, but i know that it'll be a thriller. And according to the screen shots on herinteractive.com, the rooms and everything look so interesting. it's beautiful looking really. here, check it out. http://www.herinteractive.com/prod/cur/index.shtml
over all, i think this game is going to be GREAT.
