Great game ruined by excessive dialog

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 5

This could be an excellent game if the developers had cut 75% of the reading. There are periods where you have to sit through 10 minutes of character conversations before seeing any action. Reading like this might be appropriate for some games but for a mario platformer .. no thanks.

The 2-D to 3-D is a great concept, hopefully Nintendo expands on this in the future .. minus the dialog.

cool concept, but gets boring after a while...

fortunately, i only rented this game and didn't bother wasting more money on it. why? because it got really boring after a while and i quit after getting the 5th heart. my brother lacked the patience i had and quit after two hours of it. i'm glad to see that there were lots of people enjoying this game, but i don't think it's a great game for the wii. i can't deny that the game had some great ideas, but you don't really use the full extent of the wii remote, most of the bosses were easy to beat, and flipping it to 3d allows you to "cheat" a lot and get through most of the levels really fast. sadly, i was disappointed since i loved playing "paper mario: a thousand yr door" on the gamecube.

so... should you get it? my recommendation would be to rent the game first at blockbuster or wherever and see if you really like it. hey, if your friend has it, even better! just go borrow it from your friend. hope you guys'll join the rest of the people that gave it 5 stars and have a better experience than i did.

Old School meets New School

Super Paper Mario has all the love and fun that was packed into the first Mario Brothers game produced, but in a fresh, yet familiar, take on the Mario franchise.

Now, any veteran of the Nintendo and Super Nintendo classic Mario games will feel that this game is at a much slower pace. While there is plenty of jump and run action, this game has many RPG elements--lots of story, items, story, puzzles, oh and story. The story itself is very strange, but if you stop to read it (instead of skipping to the action), it's actually quite amusing. Also, you'll run into levels that leave you scratching your head until you remember to flip the world somewhere or wave the remote at some wall to find the way forward. Though, this is not so bad in my opinion, because you get to play the game longer.

So, Super Paper Mario may feel somewhat like the classic Mario gameplay, but it has so much more added to it wrapped up in a funny story. Definitely a must-own game for Mario fans who have managed to snap up a Wii.

super boring mario

I had high hopes for Super Mario as I am a long time fan of the goofy mustache faced guy. Sadly, the game was a bit too easy. Once you realize that you simply have to flip to 3D world everytime you get stuck, it becomes easy to navigate your way.

The worst part was the monotony. By this I mean that parts of the game just went on for no reason. One part you have to battle all these stupid warriors. Basically jump on their heads one or two times. Then you would go through a door and run around and go back on the bridge and do it over and over again.

Another long boring part was running through this world that blew up and nothing but white with a few black lines appeared on the screen. You had to run forever to get to a battle. If you failed in the battle you had to run, run, run through the monotonous white world.

Lastly, the dialog was utter torture. The writers tried to be funny, but it didn't add to the story and was simply annoying. I was very dissappointed in this game. I still awarded it 3 stars for some of the creative aspects of the game.

Child's play

This is a game for children. The graphics, the story, the game play, the level of difficulty, the music... all best suited for the little ones. Of course Mario's hay-day was when I was about 7 years old so he's always been a kid's character for me and I really think that's how it should be.

The allusions to classic Mario games (music, graphics, level lay-outs, etc...) are pretty neat if you first beat Mario in 1990 and you're looking for a flash-back like me. However there could easily be a lot more than there is.

There really is WAY WAY WAY too much blah blah blah blah... and while a fraction of it is comical, most of it is mindless dribble that's insulting to people looking to actually play the game. You can skip through a lot of it quickly though; just look for the parts in red font if you don't want to miss the clues. But what people should know is that the real issue isn't too much reading... it's too little game play. I'd be willing to deal with all this meaningless text if I got to do more than go up an elevator between the conversations. There are just too many instances where you simply walk around not actually accomplishing anything at all and then you're back in some lengthy conversation with some insanely verbose character. I do not understand why Nintendo did this, but it's clear that people do not enjoy it and there was no reason for them to have ever thought that people would. I gotta admit I feel a little cheated. A good book costs about $18... the lame story you spend hours reading in this game will set you back about $60.

Highly Overrated

After seeing so many positive reviews, I bought this game with much anticipation. I find, unfortunately, that it fails to live up to the hype. The game tries to do many things, but in doing so fails to execute any of them very well. I was hoping the action would be similar to that of the classic Mario games, but does not even come close. The storyline is trite, and the game has so much text that it detracts from the gameplay. The graphics are hardly better than those seen in "Paper Mario-the Thousand Year Door," which is no surprise considering it was originally developed for the gamecube.

With all of this said, this game does have some redeeming characteristics. The gameplay, while not addictive, can be fun at times, and the unique 2-D to 3-D dynamic can make for some clever problem solving. Still, I would not recommend shelling out $50 for it if you are looking for a fun action game. Mario Galaxy is on the horizon, and it looks to be much more fun in terms of gameplay. If it's an interesting storyline you're after, Zelda: Twilight Princess is already on the shelves, and it's plot is much more engaging.

Like a cross between Mario and Zelda

It's so much fun to go between 2-D and 3-D. There are different things to do, find and avoid in both dimensions. Writing and acting is fun and clever. Puzzles are very much like Zelda puzzles. I highly recommend this one!

Mario diluted

You make no friends by saying bad things about a Mario game, but this is my honest opinion. Nintendo would have been better off to make a simple, fun side-scroller in the style of New Super Mario Bros (DS) instead of this.

The art style is brilliant, as is the character design, and the platforming areas are usually great fun. But the game is let down severely by the pace: for every fun platforming area, there's twice as much irritating, unnecessary talking, hunting for items, and using the gimmicky "flip to 3D mode" to find secrets. I was actually relieved when I found Save Points in the game so I didn't have to keep playing.

I thought that the Wii was meant to feature lots of pick up and play games - a criteria the standard, start-to-finish platformer would have fulfilled nicely - not ones that dilute what made games featuring Mario great in the first place. Really, really disappointing.

Cute and brings a smile to your face

The "cool" factor of Mario flipping from 2D to 3D is innovative and lets you think "outside the box."

The game is fairly simple but seems to have lots of extras for completes. Seems to be a replay factor on previous levels, since once you complete a "chapter" you can go back, and with your higher experience levels, you can use your new "powers" to explore the levels.

The game has some good puzzle solving. And so far, at the early stages hasn't been repetitive.

There are some very good touches in design. The text scrolling is a little annoying as is the repetitive sound for text scrolling, but there a few lines that bring a smile to your face. You can't skip through repetitive tasks, i.e. going on an elevator, or talking to certain characters, which becomes annoying. However, the innovation and fun factor, plus possible nostalgia for old school Mario makes the game very playable.

You should not try to compare it to Zelda, it's not even in the same league, however, for games out there right now, this would be one which will be very playable.

Might skew to younger, but any adult who played the original NES back in the eighties will get a kick. The colors are vibrant and cartoony. Probably can be solved fully without referring to a code book. Saving is intuitive and allows you to make backup copies, so you can ensure you won't get stuck. (However, I doubt that you could ever place yourself in a situation where you couldn't finish, since you can always go back to "homeworld" and easily rack up points to ensure you can continue.) If the game in parts would move faster, (without text scrolling) it would be infinitely better, but still enjoyable in its current iteration.

Super Paper Mario is Super Fun, But...

This game was great. I bought a copy a week ago, and I have been playing it about an hour and a half a day. So, I have played it around 10 or 11 hours. It is so much fun, and the ideas and concepts behind the game are brilliant. My only gripe is, I finished it already. It was so short and it was pretty easy to do. If I could go back, I would have rented it because I tend to play games a little longer every day that I have them rented so that I can get as much out of them as I can for the money spent. If I would have rented this game, I would have finished it within the five days that you rent them for. It is a great game, but don't spend $50 on it. Spend $7 renting it.
