Beautiful, but grueling.

I really like the Zelda franchise, or at least, I thought I did. Although this game is breathtakingly beautiful, I couldn't be bothered to play it the whole way through. Neither could either of my friends who bought it. We seem to have a few issues with it:

1) There's a lack of autonomy. The reason that I can keep going back to the original Legend of Zelda is the fact that the game never forces me to do things its way. For example, I've played through the entire game (up to Gannon) without even getting a sword. In this game, they lead you from point A to B to C without ever giving you serious choices about what to do next. Although there's a medium-sized Hyrule to explore, there's really not much point.

2) The story sucks. I really don't care about how shadowy pixels are doing bad things. In fact, I pretty much despise my main companion. He/she/it seems to be the focal point of the 'leading me by the nose' (see above).

3) The controls are not as good as they should be. The usage of the wii-mote is cool---really cool. However, it really saddens me that I can't shoot enemies with my bow and arrow while riding horseback. I can try, of course, but the amount of time it takes for me to aim backwards always gives some flying monster enough time to knock me off my horse. I try again and again, but to no avail. That's really too bad, because I would love horseback archery.

4) The boomerang sucks. Why?

5) Being a wolf sucks. Whenever I was forced to wolf mode, I'd stop playing for about a week, since I hated it.

There were some awesome things:

1) Fighting the Moblins on horseback. There was some sort of chase scene where I was rescuing some girl. It involved lots of horseback riding and horseback fighting. Awesome.

2) The giant spider boss. Who could dislike smashing a giant spider using giant robots?

So, it was an okay game. I played up until I'd gotten the last shard of the mirror, or something. I'm pretty sure I was right near the end, but I didn't care. It's too bad.

Best Zelda Game To-Date

No Legend of Zelda game since Ocarina of Time has ever matched the title of being one of the best games ever made. Not until Twilight Princess, that is. Don't get me wrong, The Wind Waker was cute and fun. But it was never epic. Twilight Princess takes the best elements of Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker, and all of the past Zelda games and combines them to create the most epic, emotional, exhausting, and fuffiling Legend of Zelda games ever. Nintendo delayed this project, quoted as saying, "We want to make this perfect." With the Wii and Twilight Princess, I will never doubt Nintendo again.

A lot of people remember their first experiance playing Ocarina of Time. It was the first 3D Zelda game. And it was HUGE. It was a whole new way to interact with a game. The Wii gives that same joy to players of Twilight Princess. The interaction of the Wii Remote and Link is perfect. Don't hesitate for a minute to think that it'll detract from your gaming experiance. I thought it would take a little while to get used to. 5 Minutes. Actually, it wasn't anything to get used to at all. It was more learning for the first time and having it feel so natuaral that you just pick it up instantly.

Here are some bullet points of things about the game:
- The expression that Link and all the characters got in The Wind Waker wasn't lost at all by going to more realistic types of graphics
- Every motion Link does is so natural, they had to use Motion-Capture. Even the animal movements are super-realistic and make you go, "Awwwww."
- The temples are hard, but NEW. Some of them are classic, head-scratching Zelda temples. Others are an entirely new, wonderful experience. It's nice to know Nintendo isn't afraid of trying new things with such a classic and proven formula.
- Epic. I can't tell you how epic this game is. Size isn't everything, although the Map is enormous. The amount emotion that you find yourself feeling for the characters and when you save someone, defeat an enemy, or accomplish a quest... is exhilarating.
- The first hour or two is slow. But don't stop, not only does it pick up, after that it's non-stop action.
- Everything is intertwined, like a great movie. I don't want to go into detail because I don't want to give anything away. But nothing is done without multiple purposes, even if you don't know it when you first do it. It's not like in Ocarina where you help a certain people and then you're done seeing them. I can't say anything more without giving something away. But there are a lot of twists and turns. Sometimes I find myself astonished, with my mouth gaping open.

It's an amazing game. I'm 40 hours in and loving every minute of it. I recommend this to every type of gamer.

Starts off a little slow but soon turns into one of the best games of all time.

Wow, that discribes the feeling that you get while playing this game. The game starts of somewhat slow but after the second temple when the game gets open ended it is awesome. So much stuff to do: horseback combat and archery, fishing, finding different secrets and items, side quests and all the different mini games. Nobody puts these things in a game and makes it fit into the game world and immerse you like Nintendo. I get more impressed the longer I play. I love this game!!! Great job nintendo!!!

Best Zelda game ever!

I dont know whats wrong with the reviewr under mine, but I think this is the best zelda story line yet. You get all sorts of cool weapons and you dont have to worry about running out of magic with the cool weapons. These graphics are really good, and I would definetly recommend this to any one who owns a wii. This is definetly game of the year.

Spectacular

I've been playing vids since the days of the 2600, and have owned virtually every system, be it Nintendo, Sega, Sony or other, since the days of the NES. If a reasonably objective list of the Top-20 games of all time, regardless of platform, were to be compiled, there seems to be little question that the 'Zelda' franchise would place multiple entries. 'A Link to the Past' and 'Ocarina of Time' would both place Top-5 on the lists of many, many people.

Given that sort of storied lineage, 'Twilight Princess' faced the crushing weight of expectations that would in most cases be almost impossible to meet. Well, I guess it helps to have a demigod like Shigeru Miyamoto working in your shop. I'm a little short of 30 hours into the game, in the middle of the Snowpeak Ruins now, and I'm sufficiently wowed that I can honestly say this is the best 'Zelda' game ever made. It takes everything about the series that you've always loved and ratchets it up to the nth degree. The characters are memorable and fully realized, the locales are huge, varied and lushly detailed, the minigames are a lot of fun. The Wii remote control scheme was intuitive and easy to master, and I wouldn't want to go back to a regular controller after having experienced it. Basically, the entire game is clicking on all cylinders. Nintendo even took some cues from some of its competitors (I see hints of 'Shadow of the Colossus' and 'FF7', e.g., at work at various junctures throughout). One reviewer on another website called the entire game a love letter to 'Ocarina', and I think that hits the nail squarely on the head here. If you like adventure games, or, really, if you like videogames at all, you probably owe it to yourself to give this at least a couple hours of your time to see if you fall under its spell. Wonderful, wonderful game.

FOR THOSE WHO PLAYED OCARINA OF TIME....

When I bought Ocarina Of Time back in 1998 I was excited and really impressed about the first 3D Zelda. When Twilight Princess was coming out I thought: how could they make it better than Ocarina?

When I mean better, I mean PLOT behind all of the flashy graphics and gameplay. I would have to say that the plot of Twilight rings equally with Ocarina only that it will be a bit difficult for a younger crowd to fully understand it. There is a lot of esotericism mixed in with the plot...and some shocking parallels to the world we live in: 'The people lived as ghosts - not knowing they'd passed into the twilight.' tells me of the indifference of people living in a depraved state from an unruly government...'nuff said.

One thing I've noticed in Twilight Princess is it's a bit more 'grown up' than Ocarina but there are still enough games and subquests to take on when you're not ready to complete that next big dungeon. I believe this is a game where you can really 'take time' with it. The designers spent so much detail on the graphics everywhere you go that it's fun just to stop and observe even the fine details. The music is also a strong point...ambient, and sometimes very simple - but very fitting and not overdone. Some places will give you an almost religious experience because they're so well-detailed with myths, liths, glyphs, and idols...and you can tell they were MADE to be looked at. The appearance and design of the dungeons will make Ocarina's quite a bit elementary looking.

A large element of the game you will play as a wolf when venturing through 'twilight'. Later you'll have the ability to change from human (hylian) to wolf at will. You'll meet an enigmatic female character named 'Midna' who rides on your back as a wolf instructing you where to go and what to do (a lot like Navi in Ocarina). It's ironic that your horse (Epona, or whatever name you choose) is your beast of burden when you're hylian, but when you are a wolf - the tables turn. As a wolf, you'll have other abilities combined with Midna like Energy Field Attacking for encircling a group of enemies and then turning on them at once in a lifelike, snarling, roaring melee; X-sensory for honing in on smells, seeing ghosts, and spotting hidden items and grottos in the dirt that can be dug into; the last skill is you learn to howl...a unique touch to Ocarina's idea of learning songs, but you usually only use them once.

Gameplay as Link (or whatever name) is somewhat straightforward. If you've played Ocarina, Majora, or Windwaker - you'll pick it up right away. I've never played it on the Wii so I don't know what that's like. You'll learn a lot of new techniques throughout the game like the shield thrust, back slice, and super spin - but if you're caught in the heat of battle you may forget them and just start doing baseball swings right and left.

As far as weapons and mobility for link you'll get a few new items: The spinner...a toothed, top-like device you ride on top of and use to cling to tracks in the walls; the ball and chain...well, ok it's a smash to use; the command rod is used to control large statues that mock your movements of the rod. You have multiple targeting with the boomerang (borrowed from Windwaker); you can raise or lower yourself from a vertical hang with the clawshot (hookshot), and with double hookshots you can cling to one target and shoot to another. The iron boots serve a dual purpose as they are magnetic which means you can cling to walls and ceilings that are....

Overall...a fairly serious game and not suited for an audience under twelve...as the plot is a little deep. Very well done and worth every penny...for the Gamecube anyway.

Brilliant as always!

The Good:
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is an amazing game full of adventure! The many twists and turns make the game more exciting along with the new items you acquire throughout the game. The land of Hyrule is full of things to do. From finding golden bugs, to poes, and many treasure chests full of rupees. Once again the fishing is included in this Zelda game, but this time with a beautiful scenery, and a bigger lake. But alas, Link starts off on a new adventure, along with his new companion Midna, to save Princess Zelda and Hyrule. Minda starts off with her own agenda but things happen in the game to make her change her mind and help our beloved Zelda. Without giving too much away, all I can say is that they did a good job with the storyline, although it did have its flaws. Not much of the story was given away until about 10 hours of game play, which was Nintendo's way of making us Zelda fans play so many hours in a row! :) The pieces of the story they did give us was still not enough, which made me, and probably everyone else, have sleepless nights, and loooooong work days, just so we could get further in the game for more of the story. Once the whole story is revealed, you have your "Ooo's" and your "Ahh's" but then stop and think, "Wait, they didn't explain why this happened." In a way that peeved me, but after a little thinking it gave me hope for a sequel to Twilight Princess!

One minor yet major thing...They actually had music play at night! I always wondered why they decided to have no background music at night in OoT, MM and WW, but I'm sure glad they decided to use it for TP! All the music in the game was amazing. You just gotta love Hyrule castles theme song! Everyone can thank Link to the Past for that one. XD

The Bad:
I really hate having to say anything bad about Zelda because these games are like my babies, but the one thing that annoyed me was....NO MAGIC?!?! Throughout every temple I would think "Well, maybe I'll get my magic now..." 65 Hours of game play later, I still had no magic. Link didn't learn any kind of magic in this game. I think this had to be the first Zelda game ever where he doesn't use magic. But, this gives me hope for a sequel because then maybe Zelda will teach Link how to use magic and that triforce of his!

One last thing! I wish there would have been more mini-games in the town to play! That one star game gets old.

This game is addicting and very enjoyable. The control scheme is fantastic (very intuitive), while the gameplay is a blast. I really enjoy the problem-solving stages in both Link's human and wolf forms. This is my first Zelda game that I have played because I am not usually an RPG fan, but this game is great!!

This was the first game I bought with my new Wii and I recommend everyone get this game. The gameplay is awesome. Never before have I played any videogame that is this interactive. You will be blown away by the controls and functions of the Wii remote.
The storyline itself is great as well. This in my opinion is one of the best Zelda storylines. If you plan on getting a Wii or already have one get this game with it. You will not be let down.
