Fun in single player, boring in multiplayer

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 0 / 0

If you get Red Faction, your getting it for the single player mode.

Honestly, this games engine just isnn't suited for FPS gameplay but it definently works out in single player mode, which is where the game excels.

The game has a bit of a sluggish, slow feel which ruins the multiplayer action.

The ability to shoot through, yes through, walls is amazing. You can make tunnels literally miles long with a rocket launcher or grenades, etc. Very awesome.

The sound and graphics are pretty good but the control is a little hard to get used to, especially with no keyboard or mouse.

Red Faction is definently good, but there are way better FPS games out there. I suggest renting it first.

Very fun game

I have played this game from beginning to end. At first I was not so sure if I would like the whole mars environment, but after playing and getting further along in the game, its worth it. The movement is very easy and the game is not so overly difficult as to take away from the enjoyment of it. Being able to save whenever you want is a plus as well. The graphics are great, and even though you cannot destroy everything, that is not a problem at all or does not take away from the game as a whole. I recommend this game to anyone who likes action adventure type of games. This is definitely one of the best out there.

Red Faction

Red Faction is a terrifically enjoyable first-person shooter, and is worth owning for that. But don't buy into the hype that its destructible environments make it a totally new kind of gaming. It's not that often in the game that you really have a destructible environment, so this innovation is only occasional.

Geo-Mod's impressive qualities are not apparent from the start. Its first uses are - blowing holes in places marked for you by painted crosses. These are designated openings that let you pass into other rooms. As such, they function no differently from the entrance to the DataDyne Labs in Perfect Dark, where a weak point in a wall has to be blown open. It amounts to a covered doorway.

Generally, Geo-Mod is apparent only in the craters and chunks blown out of walls during rocket-fire. This sort of cosmetic destruction is not Geo-Mod's selling point, but it is the most common use it's put to. You need to notice how a hole blown into the same spot is different each time it happens to appreciate that there is something more to this.

You are sometimes directed to `make your own door', but unless you spend ages on potentially-abortive sessions exploring what you might blow access-ways through, you don't know if these aren't just hidden doors dressed up for you to find. You are not as free as the marketing suggests you will be (which is rather like the situation in the game's backstory, come to think of it).

The best instance where Geo-Mod is shown off is where you need to blow steps in a rock wall up into a vent-shaft many feet above you. As your explosives will make differently shaped holes each time, you have to be careful (or lucky). Saving before you begin is advised, as it is easy to mess up and find yourself with no more rock to blow steps in. Standing in a cave of your own creation, with unscalable walls, and your way out too high over your head, you will have no option but to reload and start over.

In general, the only downside of the game is that it can be a little repetitive after a while. The levels stream into each other with only an occasional movie-clip to break up the action. These do not create breaks in the story, indicating passage of time. The action of the story is continuous, with no intervals for your character Parker's rest, sleep or meals. This is good, though it does make you wonder at his stamina. The entire game takes place in one non-stop run. And it's a long game. The footwork involved in all the ground covered would itself kill most people. Even more impressive is the fact that Parker begins the game coming off one of the gruelling ten-hour shifts he speaks of in the intro. You would think even a miner accustomed to the regime would be exhausted.

One of the breaks you get from running around shooting is walking around in disguise. Lifted directly from a level in Syphon Filter 2, you don civilian clothes and have to make your way through corridors without letting anyone get close enough to recognise you. This is quite challenging, but boils down to working out (by trial and much error) patterns of movement you can slip between. A logistical flaw in this part is that even if you set off the alarm, you cannot trade your puny pistol for any weapons dropped by guards. The (inadequate) explanation is that in disguise, you are not wearing your miner's suit, which allows you to carry lots of weapons (the logic behind that is never made clear). So you get busted for the umpteenth time, guards are pouring after you with machine guns, the need for stealth is gone - but you are still incapable of picking up a fallen machine gun. Hmm.

And something seems odd about that silenced pistol you have in these stealth levels. You have just 16 rounds, because you cannot carry extra ammo, and the idea is that you only use it if you really need to kill someone. You think that this will be helpful in clearing the level for your safe movement, as in Metal Gear/Syphon Filter. But no, this pistol cannot deliver a one-hit-kill headshot. Wait for a guard to stroll by, pop a bullet in his helmeted-head, and he starts running, and you have to pump around six more bullets into his body before he dies.

The argument is presumably that the guards are well armoured. OK. But then why, in a later level, when you enter the villain's lair, do you meet non-helmeted elite guards who are invulnerable not only a flamethrower at close range, but also a rocket launched right to their feet? Noticing the nonsense of this particular episode brings bitter suspicions that the game cheats.

Red Faction is very impressive, but is not quite the technical wonder that it aims to be. When large structures are blown into falling rubble, the fall looks choppy, which is disappointing in an otherwise smooth-running game. The submarine and fighter aircraft you get to control behave in exactly the same way. Only the exterior environment beyond the cockpit window is different. This is not unacceptable, just disappointing. But all things considered, a very good game.

This is the best game out there for Playstation 2 right now. This game has amazing graphics. The game play is great. The weapons are great. You can even blow a hole in a wall and have it stay there with thew new technology this game uses. you can use the holes to hide in and to get passed locked doors. This game also has a great multiplayer mode. I could not stop playing this game until I beat it. This was the first game I could keep my attention on long enough to beat. This is the best game out there for PS2.

I have a n64 and I played the ps2 at my friends house. I have to say that I was EXTREMELY impressed with the single and the two player games. The storyline was easy to follow as I progressed through the game. The graphics beat any game I have seen before including PS2 games like Rumble Racing and NBA Live. The weapons were apropriate for the storyline(like weapons that you could blast tunnels with, it is, after all, a game about revolting miners). Because of that game I was inspired to get the PS2. A must to rent or even buy.

addicting game

If you liked Bond and Perfect Dark for 64 then this game is right down your alley....right? No......this game is in the same genre but those games blow red faction out of the water....Sure, the graphics in red are better but what kind of ..control scheme uses both analog sticks....honestly? Once you get the hang of it, after hours.......it still begins to bug you.....this game is a good game don't get me wrong, but it should have had the option to change the controls......Rent this game first before buying it to see if it is right for you......

Great Game!!

This is a great game that will give you hours of entertainment, but somewhere along the lines it gets old. The single player is great until about three fourths of the way through when you have to save before every door because you don't know what is about to kill you on the other side. The ability to blow holes in the walls is amazing, it's about the only reason the multiplayer is worth playing though. I think the one thing that would make this game a lot better is if it was broken into levels more like goldeneye, so you could go back and replay your favorite ones, instead of making it one long, long, repetetive battle. Even with it's flaws, I would definetely recommend this game to anyone!!

Oh, Yeah!

This game rocks! It is unlike any other I have ever played. It has a good story, the graphics are excellent and I really dig the variety of weapons. Get this game! You'll be glad you did.

A Fun Game

When I first turned on this game, it grabbed me right from the start. Going back to the old theme of the battle for freedom by some badly treated colonists on a future Mars. The theme is great and the gameplay is original. It does go along with the style of the Metal of Honor series with much improved diffrences. The vehicles you are allowed to control, as well as the ability to go just about were ever you like, not confined to one way like metal of honor. This game gets my highest rating for it's great playability, and although the controls are a little difficult to master at first, it was a surprisingly good game for anyone who like first person shoot-em-up style games.
